DiResta's Cut: Massive Dovetail-Joined Bench
Вставка
- Опубліковано 23 сер 2024
- Jimmy DiResta walks (and talks!) us through wrangling this massive oak slab into a useable piece of furniture. Unlike DiResta's other videos, in this "Diresta's Cut" series Jimmy will narrate to explain what he's doing, what he's using and how he overcomes certain challenges during the building process.
"This is only the third set of dovetails I've ever done" he says as they slide together perfectly.
Annony Mouse The first two he made in the fifth day of creation, after finishing the rest of the doves.
If you want some great woodworking plans then I recommend you visit this website here: HootWood. com
And he makes his point very clear about 5 times, going as far to say that he hasn't done dovetails in "100 years".
I'm not even a carpenter. Why do I watch so much Diresta's videos?

Don't have to be a carpenter to appreciate beauty and craftsmanship :)

same
same here..LOL
I definitely like the narration better than the simple high speed videos. I've learned a lot of simple techniques and tricks through watching your videos. Your narrations only add to that.
Thank you for making your experience available to us.
An incredible craftsman, just love seeing mr Diresta work. It seams fast and sloppy but the end result is always immaculate, cool and just so so stylish.
Yes, the voice over narration makes these videos even better than ever. It helps us learn more about what is being done. Great Job!
Since I started watching you not only have I picked up tips, but I now look for garage sales to see what tools I can pick up. Thanks
dear Diresta, i have almost watched all of your videos, they all are so professional in their own places but this one 'pith black oak bench' is something a whole new level of satisfaction and joy. love your work so much.
i wish i could travel to your country and you could coach me with your wide wisdom of work.
This was fascinating Jimmy - I hope there are more of these on the way?
I think these types of videos are incredibly generous - I, and I imagine many others, learn lots from hearing you speak, the thought process, and also the technical side of things.
Thank you for taking the time.
I really like this style of video. It's definitely a nice addition to the normal Diresta-style videos.
2:37. "You got to be gentle" as he hits the Dremel with a mallet LOL.
Jared Jeanotte Watch again. He doesn't hit the dremel with a mallet. He switches over quickly to a chisel and mallet to remove the waste.
Kevin Wright Actually, I think he was just tapping the material back down so it wouldn't bind on the dremel blade. There were already chisel marks in the end-grain at 2:35 and the chisel stayed on the bench top, it seems.
Yes, on second look I think he just taps the waste material. It's hard to tell on hi-speed. But either way he does a great job on this piece.
It's beautiful Jimmy! I love how you can make something so simplistic but complicated at the same time. The finish is perfect!
Good work bringing Jimmy on. He's the coolest show on the tube.
I enjoy the narration. It gives some perspective into the mind of my favorite maker. Great job as always, Jimmy!
Another good build that is well explained with lots of tips and tricks. Great job Jimmy D.
So I love his original videos with no commentary and its sped up and yadadada fixates my need to see work done but to see your work with commentary that dives in deeper into why you did certain this is so much more interesting to me. I love it. Telling us why you did certain things is so much more amazing.
I've been meaning to tell you for months to tell you how much I appreciate your work! Obviously you are gifted so thanks for sharing your gift!
+Henry Robinson Thank you sir!!
Jimmy built a bench out of one piece of wood, dove-tailing the joints by hand.
I hung a shelf today, it took me and two other people and I ended up having to re-drill some holes because I didn't measure correctly.
FML
LOL
Understatedly gorgeous! Jimmy really let the wood do the talking.
I enjoy this type of video, hearing Jimmy talk and explain what he's doing so much more than the others. Good job Jimmy!
Hi Jimmy! I'm from germany and have been watching your videos for years now since I found your channel accidentially.
I really, really love watching them because it kind of helps me relaxing after a hard day of work.
I just thought you should know that there are also some people from the international beer country watching.
Keep going, I love it!
Beautiful in it's simplicity. Nice work, jimmydiresta
Started listening to the Making It podcast, and decided to listen from the beginning... This project was mentioned today and Jimmy sounded happy about it, so I came to check it out... and it's awesome.
The narration makes it that much better, I'd like to see you do this on other videos.
This is awesome! Great to hear you explaining what you're doing, jimmy
Great, great, GREAT project! Thank you once again Jimmy!
I like this style of video just due to the fact I am watching how it was done and hearing all the little tricks you used to achieve the results. It is a 2 for 1 deal.
I still like all of your videos , I find them entertaining and inspiring.
Keep up on the great work. 😊
That is one beautiful piece of furniture. Always amazed at your work Jimmy.
One of my favourites from Jimmy.
Jimmy DiResta That looks amazing! Normally I don't like stained/painted projects - I prefer natural tones, but man that looks really good.
I love the new narrative style. Lots of tips I can use. Thanks!!
The idea for comment during the video is more than good, excellent.
Another amazing hidden Jimmy Diresta build, excellent
Looks beautiful and some of the biggest dovetail joints I have seen.
Never seen dovetails on a cupped slab before this video. Nice job making the bench.
I've envisioned this exact same project, down to the rough measurements and truss road. I'm just blown away that you had the exact same thing in mind.
man...this stuff is addictive. first thing in the morning & last thing at night. not to mention during the day.
I know. I get on DiResta benders usually late at night. I'm a terrible craftsman myself, but feel inspired watching his projects.
I really enjoyed this video, thankyou for making it. Start to finish videos are one of my favorite things to watch. I love seeing the persons unique progress, and steps they choose to take
Great vid Jimmy. Reminds me of when when I was younger that was the first joint my grandfather taught me. I found out years later he was making bets with his friends that by 8 years old I could cut dovetails as well if not better than his friends. Needless to say I cut a lot of dovetails in my life and made good money for my age doing it.
Jimmy, I'm loving the commentary. Have always wondered the thought process, and now can hear them. Thanks for another great video brother
What a wonderful vision/result you had. Beautiful.
Jimmy that is beautiful, so glad you didn't smack it with an axe or an ice pick at the end.
Beautiful work Jimmy. The narration of the video was also a very nice addition. Hope to see you in the fall.
Great project, Jimmy DiResta . I was shocked at first when you pulled out the black paint for that gorgeous oak. But the end results won me over.
Lovely bench! This format is very insightful to see how the process plays out from start to finish.
I love the fact you attempted dovetails, even though you said you weren't that practiced. It's nice to see even someone so well versed trying things and experimenting.
That black die is awesome, great project Jimmy
Dye *
+Joshua Faller that's just an Ad Hominem.
Love it! Love the narration of your work too. Need to do that more often.
jimmydiresta that is one beautiful bench. Rustic modern art! Thank you sir.
Very reminiscent of a woodworking "Adventures with Bill" from the Red Green show. Kidding aside, it's good to hear your voice Jimmy. It's nice to hear what you're thinking as you were working. Interesting solution to the cupped wood dove tails.
Great piece Jimmy I really enjoyed this video with your narration of the process the various techniques materials used combined with the speed ed up video it was perfect not dragged out like other videos hope you keep making more like this
Beautiful bench Jimmy. Dovetails look awesome and slight imperfections only add to the aged look. Great job DaVinci Diresta.
absolutely beautiful shelf, thank you for the video and the narration made it special in your own words during construction..
I like this style but I think that the beautiful art of Jimmy's (of yours, jimmy if you read this) is in the silence so that you see the craftsmanship in the work with no spoilers and it really is the jimmy style. To me, watching a Diresta video is like zen. Great job.
Langdon Harris thank you , i figured this can be sound off .. or on.. either works
TANK YOU !
Haha. I heard you say something about the sound being off in making it. Nice work!
I make a lot of hand cut dovetail boxes (I am strange and enjoy dovetailing) I know the above was no mean feat even for someone like Jimmy with his wide range of talents including woodworking given how badly cupped that wood is. Really superb effort
Wow...Just wow. Great work Jimmy!
i love the commentary! i'll take commentary over no commentary diresta videos any day of the week.
Jimmy, I love this format, man! The narration is really helpful. I think it helps to answer some questions that people generally have in the comments section. Thanks for all you do for aspiring makers, brother.
Beautiful job, beautiful bench....Thank u for sharing it with all.
Dude! Nice build, good narration, sweet camera work. Good job. This is a good format for woodworking, building, and art on you tube. Thanks
I like you using the multi tool to cut the dovetails! For me it would certainly be harder than doing them traditional. I will have to try dovetails this way. Thanks!!
another great job
weldingtipsandtricks THANK YOU for the love and respect, Brother!
looks really beautiful man, I could almost kiss it :D
If I made that I'd be damn proud of myself I imagine
Definitely looks sturdy enough to support my 270+ pounds. Nice bench and those dovetails look better than most I've seen on UA-cam.
Great job as always. I always learn something from your videos.
The commentary adds a lot. Great video as usual Jimmy!!
TQ Jimmy.
another crash course of coarse art.
love it!
That one gone supercool! Beautiful result.
Great job Jimmy and great result,however.......!!! I can't help thinking how nice it would have looked sanded down and with a nice finish on that oak. Not to take anything away from it. It's cool.
Thank you for narrating this build. Any chance that you might go back to your other videos and add an audio narrative to them? That would be so cool if you did! Your videos have helped my creative abilities so much and I am so grateful. You are an amazing teacher even without the narration but if you added that to your videos, I would think that would put them over the top on views. I know that I would be glued to the computer for days watching them. Thank you Mr. DiResta.
Great walk through on the project Jimmy! Thanks!
I know you think people don't wanna hear you talk the whole time. but at least for me, I enjoyed the explanations. I was gonna actually ask about the S hooks BUT I didn't have to! thanks again and of course, great job
Awesome bench Jimmy, and great video.
Great job with a good commentary and video. Very enjoyable!
Beautiful! Great work as always, Jimmy.
Love these "walktrough" tips videos!
Loved the video and really enjoyed the narrated tutorial!
I tuoi video sono molto interessanti e tu hai uno stile inconfondibile. Saluti e rispetto dalla Sardegna!
Beautiful piece Jimmy!
Great work Jimmy!!
One of your best videos - great job!
Awesome! Love the voice over.
I love the commentary. The only thing I think you are missing from your videos is a break down of prices. I understand you sell your stuff and not all of it is purchased specifically for each project. But I would love to know a general idea of what your projects cost to build. I am constantly in aw of your creativeness that I want to try building some of these things myself. Great work.
I must try one! Thank you for showing!
so simple, yet beautiful!
gostei do JEEP!!!!
Great work Jimmy
"beautiful marks of the saw blade" -
wow, so I'm not the only one who likes these marks...
I see everyone taking them off (ok, in many cases they are right) but these have a beauty of their own
Same for the precision grinding marks on a steel blank - I really love those
Wonderful project.
awesome video Jimmy, great walk through with the voice over!!
As always, nicely done!
Beautiful, a piece of art, something many would do, but can't....
and that, to me, is sad.
Very cool Those dovetails are so huge you could probably experiment with boring a hole right through the middle of them front to back - slide in a threaded rod and lock it down.
Nice work. Thanks for sharing this experience with us.
Phil
Wow great job good insight on the bilt. That was a bad ass bench. Diresta
Great work! Thanks for narration.
Fantastic, I've been really wanting to use the wood I have as left overs from my construction chalet, and You inspired us to us them and give it a try to do similar bench. Decorating our HQ in Laguna de la Cocha, Colombian Andes and Amazon
Terrific video. Very enjoyable. Thanks man.
Beautiful! Almost looks like a piece from ikea with that black finish and sharp square edges only handmade!
Another nice build as always Jimmy, but while that dye might be a quicker way to get that colour - for those who cannot buy it (I'd never headr of it), there is another more traditional alternative by using ebonising solution on oak, and you'll then have a bit more control on the depth of colour.
Loved that! I really enjoyed the narration and I love your work.
Your channel was recommended by welding tips and tricks. Fantastic job!! New subcriber now for sure.
Beau-tee-ful !!!
An original craftsman....
Looks great, Jimmy! thanks for the vid.
