I hear people call into radio shows on the road dog xm channel. They usually ask what is best truck to buy to get started. Iim usually yelling at the radio. It really doesn't matter, forget the newer trucks. If you can figure out basic mechanical skills. And older truck is not only cheaper, but usually anyone with some mechanical skills can fix whatever the problem. Or at least save a tow. In my tractor, there's a nice storage compartment under the passenger seat. I have lengths of different size air hoses, and quick fittings, sockets, and wrenches. An a sort of 20 volt dewalt tools including a cut off wheel/grinder. Hammer. But the best most useful tool. Different sized vice grips. If an air bag blows, you can pinch off an air line and get somewhere safe to fix it.
i would add flashlight, bottle water, frist aid kit, blanket, extra food ,extra clothes ,list of phone number for emergency contacts, extra medications etc
Don’t forget basic blow apart parts! Air to air boots various clamps spare coolant hoses of all sizes with unions spare fan belts! A airbag bypass line never hurts when your sitting there with a blown bag lots of airline brass! Extra airline of various sizes
I put a Hide-a-Key on a truck I used to drive. It rattled off. Put another one in a better place and secured it with a zip tie. Worked (I think) because I forgot where I hid it!!. I always kept a second key on my set of car or house keys that I kept in my pocket.
Had that a few years ago, Mack Granite, self locked with remote on the keyring, idling to back on a dock. Took 45 minutes to remove and replace the back window of the cab to get in and unlock the doors 😔
Great vid as always mike! Preciate the advice for young guys like myself. Started writing down a list of things Ill need as a truck driver after I finish high school, keep up the good work brother
Even running locally you should have that stuff. Extra boots are optional. Yeah, I've been onboard for the passenger side peek window operation. 1/2 the time it resulted in a breezy ride home because we couldn't get it back in. BUT, at least we got in because we didn't have a extra key. Actually? I keep my extra key on my keyring for the car. Extra gloves are important in the winter. Once the ones you're wearing get wet??? They get cold and uncomfortable the next time you go outside. I know. There's lot's of laughter and head shaking at the old guys. Just don't ask me for duct tape or a fuse or a length of bailing wire. You'll get a lecture before I hand it over. Crowbar, 5lb Sledge and pliers too! If my truck is down? I'm climbing up into the spare with a gym bag and my little Coleman cooler. Might have to make it two trips to the jeep and back to make sure I have my coffee and a clipboard for the paper work/ bill of ladings
The Mack that I drove had 1200 psi hydraulic line for all of the airlines, instead of the plastic crap 💩🫵 you find on most trucks. I wasn’t a truck expert like you seem to be but I did enjoy it, except for some of the a-holes 🍼 lol that you run into 😢in any job. It was no big deal, because I had some really good friends in the business.
Another good video Mike. I carry all what you mentioned plus a cordless cut off wheel in case you need to cut a frozen padlock or a broken fender bracket etc. Very handy.
Hi From Rhode Island . Made a Bloody Mary and in joyed the video . Saw a French Truck on 95 south last week in providence ; you can’t miss your and there colors 😅
The newer Volvo tractors doors can't be locked without the key locking the door from outside. They unlock if you lock them, then close the door. Good and bad setup.
The rule of thumb. has changed over the years, started in 69, but still it is what you need, be it local or OTR.. gloves,.hammer, balling wire. tape, extra hose, tools, winter times, below zero, I kept candles, matches, tin can, blanket , fuel additives,. drinking water. etc. etc & common sense...
Trucking used to be a brotherhood not so much anymore. These guys barely check under the hood and most of them can't fix a tail light out. So sad. I can't tell you how many times I fixed my truck on the side of the road just to get home. Started in 79. Keep up the good work. 🇺🇸🏁💪🙏👍
Great video Mike! I carry all that and a roll of contractor bags (good to lay on under the truck while working on it if the ground is muddy), hose claps and/or zip ties, electrical connectors, air fittings, and a roll of tp just in case. Been running the road for over 30 years now and you can't go wrong with having all that on hand. Great seeing you stop for Teddy also. To the good ole days, when it was really trucking🍻
I’ve lived in Vermont for 20 years and never heard the term Loam till I started watching your channel. I have a friend in Maine and said loam in conversation not too long ago. Guess you’re not the only one who saids that. Haha
2 most important tools vice grips and a adjustable wrench. And always remember new generation turn your headlights OFF when your in a parking lot and the fuel island, there for on road use only some how it's not being taught 👍great video bud happy trails
CB radio, and leave it on. Just a couple days ago I was warming the truck up and heard several trucks trying to hail a slow moving truck in the right lane. They all were trying to tell the driver to get over on the shoulder, but he had no radio. Two miles down the road a pickup truck ran into the back of him. This all happened between the 179 and 181 Westbound in Nebraska. Stay safe out there.
Air line, first aid kit, wet wipes, Spare bulbs, flask hot water, coffee, . Good listening to ya Mikey while I do my pre trip in the true north🇨🇦 🇬🇧Topsoil.
Yea, You are right about that. Heavy everything that will get you out of the jam. We are coming around in to winter and snow season. Think twice when its snowing and look at your fuel. Don't want to be stuck out their with no fuel in the mountain. Learn from the OTR truckers that been out their for years. Jake brake action at the pit and rare find of a short hood mack. Damn, never seen one of those for long time. Only a long hood mack but not a short hood.
T800 and the Bulldog side by side..👊😎..my dad had an small toolbox (for a pickup) mounted on the frame behind the cab of the truck he drove for tools.etc..basically a good bit of the things you named..fuses..lightbulbs..gaskets..clamps..etc etc..extra gloves..jacket..boots..he hauled petroleum products.(gas tanker)..
@TheBostonTrucker Sorry brother, too much content to catch up on lol. That's good to hear, smart decision on their part. Can't let someone like you go. Keep up the videos! Can't wait to see the new rig!
Hi Mike, this is Dave Senior Mark’s dad, MJI Trucking if you carry nylon ties with you they’re very handy to have all sizes flashlight quarter drive Ratchet set, will you you mentioned the rest of the stuff another good thing to hear, which is a test like you never know when you have to check if you got continuity or not OK mate keep up the good job
You are so right on that comment about you can tell a lot by a driver by how their windows look and there’s a lot of them not cleaning their windows and mirrors😂😂😂😂😂😂😂
I don't stop and help much anymore. Too many idiot's on the road. If it's cold weather maybe then. Great advice on what to carry with you. I always say it's like an island out there on the side of the road . If you didn't bring it you don't have it. I carry probably too much stuff. Have a great day every one.

BDW whatever happened to Brian the rolloff driver out of Staten Island?
I haven't heard of him in awhile
Brian is still pumping out videos, his company has a new owner and a new name And they got him a new truck just like his old one.
I also drive a truck in Brooklyn I used to see him running up and down the BQE but I haven't seen him in a while
See how that t 800 has bumper polls they’d look good on your truck
Rookie rods!
Good morning Mike! You forgot at least one roll of TP! Yaaa, paper towels work but you know what I’m saying! Lol Thanks, stay safe!
2 inch ratchet strap is good to have in case you break a tank strap and bar soap or wood wedges for hole in fuel tank. Great video Mike.
Mike also should have ba first aid nkit as well
Good one 👍
I think they sell those sub zero flip flops at the truck stop now.
I thought your tire checker was your shoe not a guage 😅

I ask if the check list is ok . I was told ,whats that , I’m a driver !
Alot of these bigger companys dont want drivers even changing headlight bulbs, they would rather pay for a callout which is crazy.

Mike, how many tons do you usually haul with your trailer? I’m guessing you have overweight permits to 99k?
33 tons puts me at 99, I have a permit.

Tommy Ullo, the living legend. I've had so much fun with him on Cape Cod. Tony pulled him out of retirement, aeh?

Instead of ac plastered all over the truck you should have you initials
Seems like a whole lot of un necessary dead weight carrying all that gear around when you can just pack a AAA card like me. 😂😂😂. Jk 😅😅
😁
Glock and some nutella is all I need... anymore is just childish
