Exploring an Abandoned Gothic Victorian School from 1880!

- Located in the Southern US, in a town known most for its tobacco sales, is a vacant school house from Old America still standing to this day, barely. Back in 1880, the school was first constructed in Italianate Victorian architecture and held class for a total number of 300 children ages ranging from 6-21.
In later years, the school had some additions that included a gymnasium/auditorium and an additional wing of classrooms. This was added back in the 1930s.
By 1988, this Ohio River Schoolhouse was determined the oldest operating school in the state, but this unfortunately was the last year that students were able to learn within these walls.
As we explore what's left, we will realize the fragility of what remains as we investigate and explore gently, trying not to disturb the collapsing mess of this old American school.

"The ivy is like Mother Nature hugging the building." There is such beauty and such sadness in decay.
You are one of my very favorite explorers. You are so humble and soft spoken. I was amazed at how big the classrooms were. The ceilings so high, as well. No A.C. back in the day. The schools today would never last through all the elements for 144 years. Thanks for sharing such an groovy video.
Stay safe out yonder.

Another interesting video. Deep sadness to see the condition of this absolutely beautiful building.
That’s always my fear in the derelict explores LOL…love the terminology…... “Vibrations leading to my demise” 👏👏🤣❤️❤️
I really appreciate your sensitivity to the history of these incredible places and your dedication to preserving their images!
P. S. Thanks for showing the boiler room. It’s one of my favorite places in these old buildings. They were all steam heated in those days.
Great exploration
Love how you focus on the little details and captured the way nature is reclaiming this school, it's just really beautiful
One of your best videos, I loved this. Amazing place, the architecture and decay, and atmospheric lighting, wow
Glad you were cautious, because that place really did look like a stiff breeze would bring it down. Thanks for sharing.👍🏼👍🏼
Nice explore this. Particularly impressed with how respectful you are to the condition of the building. I’ve seen a few fair popular urbex channels doing dumb stuff in their explores.
Marty McFly: Gimme a Pepsi Free
Waiter: You want a Pepsi pal, you gonna pay for it!
It must have been a thing in the '80s, definitely not in 1955 😅
😂😂
I thought the exact same thing! 😮
Yup, I thought the same lol
Great explore, good building. Be safe out there
That co tank is used for fountain soda.
👩🏻🚒 Larger ones on wheeled carts with hoses are sometimes used for CO2 fire extinguishers.
This is amazing! My great grandparents used to live in Ripley along the river in Ohio, not too far from Higginsport! I’ve driven past this school many times. People in these small towns are pretty chill and don’t mind people walking around.
The school closed down in 1988. Thanks for coming local to Cincinnati!
JFI, almost all the old buildings that were schools, city offices government buildings ETC., had asbestos in the plaster, and the insulation around the old pipes is almost pure asbestos. My old highschool had asbestos sprayed on the ceilings. Most furnaces and boilers had asbestos in the fireboxes. They had no idea how dangerous the mineral was until we started seeing the results.
Most old rural houses had mostly cow hair as a binder in the plaster.
The cart looking device in the boiler room is a stoker. It used coal that was crushed and had an auger which fed coal into the firebox when it called for heat.
The only reason the building is still there probably is because it has asbestos and it would cost too much to tear it down.
Interesting video, thanks for posting!
Smiles.
Thanks for the added info
Pepsi Free was phased out in 1987. It is what is now known as Caffeine Free today. It was once red but to not be confused with the Coca Cola branding, it was changed to gold. It now keeps part of that gold now that Pepsi is blue but the caffeine free is now outlined in gold. Neat find!
Love the architecture. And real blackboards. What a find!!
The classrooms are so large and the windows must have let in so much light. Did you notice the sign NOT RESPONSIBLE FOR ACCIDENTS! I thought was appropriate for this explore.
Love old schools!!! You did a good job of navigating the dangers of this place! Great explore! 😊😊😊
A beautiful and enchanting old building. I love these explores. Thankyou for taking us along 😊
Wow, so incredibly beautiful! Thank you, always, for capturing the beauty of these places you visit. I always get so excited to see new content from you. It's so refreshing and heartwarming, I love the respect and passion you have for documenting these abandoned places that were once lively.
Theses are my favorite explorations. Imagining going to school there back in its prime. Great job. Thank you and looking forward to your next video!
Nice decay. Great job again. Thanks.
I love your videos because not only is it fascinating seeing your explorations, but your personality is lovely too. Thank you or being so respectful, soft-spoken and cautious
loved the video. As a Ohioian who lives less than 2 hrs from this school this is the first time I have ever heard ohio be called the south. The South historically considered south past the mason dixion line.
A very nice old place, very much forgotten, still a very nice explore thnx.
Deep south would be Mississippi, Alabama, etc. not Ohio....
Agreed. This is Ohio .. search for Higgensport Shoo-Zees
Absolutely love places like these. The many lives and silent history that happened here is still seen for what's left of it, and that in of itself is very remarkable. Urbex is a hobby I would love to get into, but until then I thoroughly enjoy the chance for being on the outside looking in. Stay safe and be careful! I know sometimes those areas it's the unfriendly locals that are more cause for worry than creaky boards.
I love these videos my hometown has so many abandoned buildings i find them so beautiful
At 17:10 they didn’t want people using the toilet is incorrect. it’s to keep the zombies from getting out. Great videos. New to your channel. Just subscribed. 👍👍
You are the best for the American explores.
CO2 is used in fountain soda in very similar tanks to this very day.
Thanks for checking out the basement!
I didn't want this to end!
On the wood part I would be very nervous walking across that part of the floor.😳
Cool video! Higginsport, Ohio isn’t the Deep South, though.
I was thinking the same. I live in Cincinnati, and although i have no clue where Higginsport is, I wouldnt call Ohio deep south.
@@emoliver80 I live in Cincinnati too and same! This is not the south lol.
He's being misleading with the title on purpose. That is probably also why he's not mentioning a town name.
Only people from Ohio care where Ohio is lol
Did he mention the deep south? I dint see it mentioned in the title? Doesnot really matter, though. Im from NM and I wouldn't have a clue where the deep south ends or begins. If you live in that area of course you'd be knowledgeable of what is what, though.
Hey Devin, hopefully I’m speaking for not only myself but I’m okay with seeing things from a distance. Don’t put yourself in danger/intense anxiousness for our sake. ❤️
The Ivy crawling in through open windows really creeps me out for some reason.
Nice old place. I wondered where the stairs to the tower room were located.
Very cool vid!! I LOVE old schools.. This is amazing! I really hope you let someone know where you are going before you go exploring alone.. Very dangerous.. Especially in buildings like that. I was cringing a bit as you were walking through.. Stay safe man!
Great video! Might I suggest bringing a hard hat with you for other explorations? Stay safe out there!
Love your content. Thank you.
Great explore!
Love your videos wish I could do that like you! Ur awesome
"Here we are boy, Bullworth Academy"
I wonder if the school district still owns this or if it had been sold to someone else by now. It seems like that building in such bad shape that I suspect that it will eventually be wrecking balled. It would have been a nice building to repurpose years ago when it closed as a school, but it is sad that it was left to rot out.
Hey Devin..Wb and tks for the new video 👍
Excited for this ❤❤❤❤
Higginsport is also on an episode of paranormal lockdown and it looked nothing like it does now so sad
They made it popular
It's such a shame that these buildings are abandoned. Why do we work so hard not to repurpose them? What a waste :/
They make a brief joke about Pepsi Free in the movie Back to the Future. Not sure of it was Part 1 or Part 2??
It was part 1 when mcfly went into the cafe he wanted a Pepsi free. The old man said if you want a Pepsi ur going to have to pay for it lol. 😊
@@matthewfarmer2520 "Give me a Tab" "Tab? I can't give you a tab unless you order something" "Give me a Pepsi Free" "If you want a Pepsi pal, you're going to pay for it!" "Just give me something without any sugar" "Something without any sugar......" *serves Marty a black coffee*
Awesome video
This is not merrely 100+ yr. old. It's almost a century and a half! Filmed precisely in time to appreciate it, as I'm pretty sure in no time only the outer walls will remain, if anything, with all the rest caved in. Very nice explore.
You mean a century and a half? It’s been shut down for almost four decades.
@@debraphillips8399 Yes, I'm correcting that now. Thanks!
@@BilisNegra No problem! 😉
That's a big building .I bet it was nice in it's day.
Those are linoleum tiles in the last classroom. That's why they are curled up and warped from temperature swings. Totally harmless.
Love old Schools and Churches, hate seeing them like this.
9:40, those are wooden beams.
Cracking video man, genuine question I know you’re not a paranormal investigator but is that something you believe in? Ever come across something unexplained like that in a place like this?
26:36 Pepsi-Free was caffeine free Pepsi, before it was named that. They used the name Pepsi-Free from 1982-87. Really neat find! Too bad it’s filled to the brim with cancer lol
I JUST CANT BELIEVE WHY THEY WAIT UNTIL GREAT OLD BUILDINGS LIKE THIS GET SO BAD OFF ,,, THEN THEY CANT FIX THEM UP ... THESE BUILDING HAVE HISTORY AND COULD BE USED FOR ADULT LIVING LOW INCOME .. NOW ITS TO LATE ITS LOW LOW NO LIVING!!!!!!! IN OUR OLD TOWN WE STILL HAVE OUR OLD SCHOOLS WITH THE LONG WINDOWS AND THE LONG LIGHTS ARCOSS...THEY ARE FIXING THEM UP FOR LIVING AND THE OTHER SCHOOL FOR A ART GALLERY,,, I REMEMBER GOING TO THEM IN THE 1960S... PLEASE BECAREFUL.. BRING YOUR CELL PHONE,,, AND THANK YOU !!
If it was nearby a bigger City this would probably be some idea, since this building was made out of bricks, but even then, roofs are very expensive to make nowadays.
Also keep in mind that its probably a bit far away into countryside. Probably not a lot People would like to move into such place.
Those carbon dioxide tanks are how restaurants still make your soda. We get a bag of syrup and the machine you see adds the water and the carbonation
Anybody else get Edward Scissorhands vibes from the busted roof with the sunlight pouring in?
Just a heads up to any other curious people,I was down that way Sunday afternoon and stopped by to take some pictures outside after seeing this video and it didn’t take long at all before a sheriff was there questioning me. Not sure if I was just unlucky or if they’re watching this place more now.
Can't wait to see this cool
People aren't thumbing up. 10K views and only 1K thumbs. Wake up people
You’ve NEVER heard “Pepsi free’ before?!
I’m in old London Town uk and even I know that when Marty mcfly arrives in the 1955 hill valley cafe hes getting strange looks becuse he’s so freaked out, so to seem normal he orders a “Pepsi free” and the cafe owner replies “if you want a Pepsi pal you’ve gotta pay for it” (!) how can you not know this?! BACK to the FUTURE part 1 - learn your cinematic history ! 😂 I loved this video keep up the great work 👌
Although it’s funny hearing you say “this is a VERY old school , more than 100 years old 😂 my school opened in the 1400s 😂😂😂😂
Looks like the old high school in my old town .
Reminds me so much of the Highschool on Slaughter High.
Yo bro. Been a fan since 2018! Can u go back to the hospital? U should go back
You were mostly safe. That was vinyl tile probably put in in the 80's. Asbestos tiles don't curl up like that. Also hard to explain but you can kinda tell from the color/pattern sometimes. At least the ones in that one room. Tiles in the basement. Most likely asbestos.
Beautiful.
What a cool old piece of architecture! People! Stop with the echo chamber of comments. Geez!
Hi Devin, I live in Florida (Sarasota) and I would like to know how you find the sites, what are your sources. Thank you
Pepsi Free was invented in the 80’s, so if the tile was installed at the same time, you’re safe from asbestos.
Watch out for pink feral ghouls.
Awesome
Beautiful Decay….❤
"Give me a Pepsi free". "If you want a Pepsi pal, you're going to pay for it".
- Back To The Future 😜
They say it’s haunted.
Pepsi free was featured on one of the back to the future movies. I'm not even a real usual pop drinker.
This building is way older than we are told It was not a school originally. It was something else.
wrong
🆘🆘🆘 τα βίντεο όσο είναι εξαιρετικά. Θέλω μετάφραση στα ελληνικά. Χαιρετισμός από ελλάδα 🇬🇷📌
Didn’t Sam and Colby do this one? And possibly exploring w Josh?
Here for the asmr
Got 5 mins in and went back to the beginning, LETS PLAY A DRINKING GAME! TAKE A SHOT EACH TIME HE SAYS OLD! EDIT!: I made it to 22mins and now im seeing two halls and 2 doors. EDIT2!: HE SAYS OLD 27? HICK! TIMES! HICK!
Kickin it Old School I see. *(I know, corny)*
Pepsi Free launched in 1982 and rebranded in1987.
👍😮😮😮😮😮
COOL
♥️♥️👍🏻
I live in southwest Ohio but you got to go a few more states south to be considered southern.
👍👍
👍👍👍
You've never heard of Pepsi Free! Oh my Dog you're young. Well I suppose that's a good thing, it was a terrible flavor. Pepsi Free was a caffeine-free version of Pepsi that PepsiCo introduced in 1982. so. No caffeine = no flavor.
Can we get a permit to recoup all of the building? Ginger bread and all.
I'd rather die than call Ohio _Southern_
Kentucky is not the South? This is literally on the border line
Kentucky is south to me. Also, lower Ohio and Indiana are southern light IMHO😂
Kentucky is not Ohio. Ohio is Ohio and it will never be Southern. Even Kentucky is a little iffy on being Southern. But definitely not Ohio, not in a thousand years.
No Pepsi free was Pepsi's answer to caffeine free Coke It was not sugar free they did however make a diet pepsi free which was both caffeine free and sugar free
I remember Pepsi Free from back in the day! It is now called "Pepsi Caffeine Free"
if it is on such bad shape it should be demolished. i mean if just walking inside makes the walls shake... you are lucky you did not end up with the walls falling on top of you.
lol like others have said Ohio isn't even the south, much less the deep south, it's the Midwest. Cool old building though.
This place on the outside looks like if hogworts became abandoned
Yes that's it! walk like a cat :D
