  • I finally finished editing.
    Here's my REAL take on chroma, its strengths, its weaknesses, its quirks and flaws. Is it worth the hype?
    I know, this took forever. but I want this to be higher effort content, I had to script, record, find good footage and edit all of it, all while working a "real" job.

    Hey! :) regarding the band limiting: We will lower the low band crossover further on the next update, as there are a few spicy lower harmonics that chroma could definitely help with, though we wont lower it entirely as processing low frequencies in general is a huge challenge and generally comes with more downsides than upsides! For the high crossover, there's a more nuanced reason. Generally speaking, most instruments may they be physical or digital tend to go more noisey the higher you go into the register. Considering that chroma cannot emulate this behavior, we had decided to cap it at the 8th octave, as most people would not be able to distinguish any notes higher than that frequency area and the processing chroma imposes on the very highs generally is more of a negative than a positive (obvious heavy filtering/notch filtering in the highs, smeary transients etc). Since most people usually dont read the manual or listen to processing recommendations, this is a choice we made to ensure chroma sounds good on 95% of the occasions without allowing for this user-error to occur 🙇‍♂

      would u ever add any tone shaping features to it or is that just not how the plugin works? I love the plugin but i feel like the character of the pronounced frequencies sounds very samey across whatever I put it on. Idk if this is just the natural sound of boosted frequencies tho. Also I dont remember off the top of my head but theres no way to get a 100% wet signal from it right?

      @@doomaster1999 generally speaking i recommend chroma on HQ mode and color at 100% to 120%! :) Then, depending on what you want to achieve with it, itll give you the most natural results. I also have a quick video explaining some of the features here: ua-cam.com/video/B2o6pobPzC8/v-deo.html

      perhaps adding an "advanced mode" or something in the menu that removes said limitations, with a small warning that it will cause weird artifacts and cpu usage could be a nice medium! Personally, I love intentionally making plugins like this glitch out and work improperly for sampling purposes, and I am interested in what the algorithm will see in noisy upper harmonics (even if it perhaps doesnt quite sound right)

    As an audio developer myself I can tell you none of us is swimming in money, not even all of the ones who already do it for more than 20 years. maybe it's different for native instruments devs or something, but the chroma dev is definitely a small fish, just like me. except for one thing, and that is that this developer made a plugin that could fascinate a large amount of people with ease, which is basically the dream for every developer. not because it means cash, but because it means that you made an impact on music production. at least that is for the devs who are not total scammers, but none of them are topic of your video. the lack of a trial version is sad, but you gotta see this developer couldn't even figure out how to add a Paypal option for the payments, you know what I mean? They spent all their time figuring out Chroma and invested the bare minimum of their time in things like websites, sales or licensing. would be cool if there was a trial, but it's totally understandable why there isn't

    • @t3ch_n0
      @t3ch_n0  3 місяці тому +18

      I see it from that side too. But the "its not about the money" argument rubs me the wrong way. Its ok that people want payment for their work, thats great. I love supporting small devs. But if it wasnt about money, it would be free.
      If they really wanted the "biggest impact" they would make a free trial available. Paypal would actually be a bad option if they wanted to make more money, because you can usually charge back incredibly easily. I dont mind them wanting to make money, I think its great. The lack of a free trial however, incentivizes obtaining the plugin illegally, and hurts consumers who also, are not always "swimming in cash".

      @@t3ch_n0 it's only about money in so far that you need to have money to feed your family at all. no shit. for me personally, not even that yet, but i'm trying to get there. i'm glad for the chroma dev to hopefully have pulled himself out of the state I am in right now...
      anyway, you should probably talk to the dev directly about your request. i've talked to him before. he's a nice guy, he has even already helped other developers basically copying his plugin fr. ofc you can not always judge about random people from the internet, but when I talked to him I had the impression that he just has a vision for sound and making some money from that is just the natural consequence of being awesome

    I bought it and love it for certain things but not just slapping it on like all the color music. The sound was already getting overused when it was pitchmap but now it’s done in a few clicks from opening the plugin. Don’t get me wrong that texture is beautiful and there’s a few really cool ways to get cool results, but that sound is like a bait for newbie producers. A one trick pony sound that’s getting used by everyone is basically ASKING for people to ignore your music. Great thoughts on the plug-in, developers did a nice job.

    Have you tried "playing" chroma with midi input? I found it a bit more versatile that way. Still has some issues, could do with a latch and more scales.
    I really found Chroma best for taming wilder plugjns and samples into something more musical. Apply sparingly to the affected area!

    Just to throw my word in, I’ve been making music for 11 years for reference. I love this plug in, the results are a lot cleaner and more consistent in this than pitchmap imo. But I do agree with your points, adjustable full frequency bands would be idea as an option. Just to toggle it on or something to test it on certain sounds. The customisation of key biases based on frequency would be great, but I couldn’t see them adding that personally. I’ll argue you can’t go wrong for $40, that’s nothing in the plugin world and for what it does, it does it all really high quality, especially in HQ mode. Love chroma and like that it has a different flavour to pitch map

    I actually use Chroma for a completely different purpose than Color Bass. I mainly make UK Garage, Jungle and overall broken beat music in the 140-160BPM range, and I have a tendency to use Chroma in conjunction with the Amigo sampler and a lo-fi plugin of choice (OCZ 45 is my sauce) to open the way for gritty, diluted but in-key pads, and washing guitars and percussion into wetland. Playing with note variation (And healthy frequency pitch experimentation pre-Chroma) leads to incredibly cool sonic exploration. Like all simple plugins, its taking it out of its intended useage that usually reaps the rewards, and I have found this ultra-modern plugin gives the exact texture I was looking for in my otherwise rugged and raw 90's style compositions

  • @TheCaptainblaubeere

    i'm lowkey tempted to try it, but i have one major concern. i would love to use this as a way to make samples and sounds fit into a certain key, make samples with atonal/out of key elements fit nicely into a key, but without making it into this colorbassy mess. the concept of shifting the harmonics to be in scale sounds great, but all ive heard done with it so far is colorbass sounds. anyone who has it, is it useful for what i'm talking about?

    • @t3ch_n0
      @t3ch_n0  Місяць тому

      Not rly, use autotune (newtone in FL studio) or some other version of it, then ur shifting based soley off the fundamental, not shifting each frequency separately. Thats what makes the color bass type of sound.

    Am I right to say that this is not an auto tune per-se but more a spectral resonator? The reason why I say this is cus it seems to not move any frequenices in the noise (there is still stuff in between the harmonics it feels like...). This style of production is not what I normally do so I might be wrong here...

    • @t3ch_n0
