Hi Divafizz, no difference really. They are both friction knots except, one needs a tool and the other you can do it by hand.

Aquaholik over at SOL has done extensive testing of lines and knot strength and in most cases, the PR knot is the strongest knot. That last part, where the half-hitches are continued beyond the leader, back onto the braid was found to weaken the knot though. Knotting braid on top of braid was found to cut into the mainline and that's what broke every time. Is there a way to compensate for the potential chaffing of the tag end of the leader on the mainline without those last half-hitches?

Hi Mike, there are many ways of tying the PR knot and we have found this method serve us well.
We never had issues with the braid on top of braid and this method "is" to prevent the burnt tag end of the leader from chaffing the mainline.

Mike. The PR knot method shown here leads to a very weak PR knot. Weaker than an FG knot. There are way more PR knot tied incorrectly than correctly on UA-cam. Just because it locks up and look like a PR knot, doesn't mean that it's a strong PR knot. You can easily test right vs wrong using 10 lbs braid and the evidence will be eye opening. Weak PR knot can break as low as 50%!. Tied one with a proper lead in and tie one that starts the knot with tight barrel wraps up and then down. You will be able to break it with a gloved hand leaving the main braid on the spool.
Look up Team Yeehaa PR knot. The underwrap MUST be open widely spaced spirals. The reduced entry angle makes a world of difference in knot strength. PR knot shown here and elsewhere that simply barrel wraps up and barrel wraps down are very weak since the first wrap right away introduce a 90 degrees bend to the main line. It doesn't matter if it is two inch or four inch PR knot. I did extensive testing to confirm this.
As far as the "ramp" compromising the knot breaking strength, it is very true with FG and PR knot. Basically the ramp makes the main braided line pulls on the tag end. This is especially very evident when the PR knot is not load test before making the ramp. The PR knot will be slow to cinch up and the main line will grab the tag end which eventually pulls out the finishing risutto or half hitch knot that the tag end made.

look up a bob sands knots ..no tools ecept cutters and twice as fast...use 11 turns for smaller mono and more as you go bigger.with 150 mono leader use a three turn on the mono part
