Excellent review! Enjoyed it, very thorough. I'm glad you can record your audio in this device, the features, etc. I'll end up buying it.
Thank you so much for your kind words! I'm glad you found the review helpful and thorough, and I'm sure you'll love the TASCAM Mixcast 4 for all your podcasting needs. Happy recording!
YO YOOOOOOO so far I'm loving it. Thank you for your video!
Thanks
A much to consider! This, Rodecaster, Zoom, or Focusrite to DAW. Every time I think I’m set, I doubt the choice.
Both good desks, it comes down to which fits your needs
Mike,
You said:
“When you’re recording your podcast, it will split these all out into separate tracks that you can later edit inside the TASCAM Podcast Editor or, of course, your audio editor of choice.”
Question:
Are these “separate” .WAV files like the RRØDECaster Pro (poly.WAV, which need to be converted via proprietary software) or like the .WAV files in the Zoom PodTrak P8 (which are compatible with any DAW without conversion)? E.g., after reading the entire user manual, I’m not seeing that the “separate” multitrack files on the SD Card would open from from, say, Apple Logic Pro X on the Mac or Cubasis on the iPad.
Note: Currently the single poly.WAV file does not play nice with Apple Logic Pro X running on my MacBook Pro M1 / Big Sur.

I've bought it and I'm almost totally happy.... The Audio Delay acts like a delay pedal. It just doubles my voice no matter the setting between 0-2000ms. There's a similar function in Atem Mini Pro and that works great. The drawback with sending the audio from Mixcast to Atem and then livestream or record - is that there are several stages of gaining added in the Atem, and that adds to the overall noise. Tascam has lousy support, it's like you're trying to reach the President of US..
*Please tell me, is Apex also in the system? Thank you*
Hello Mike,
One question, is the Line Out on the Mixcast 4 Line Level Output, enough to be sent to an FM Transmitter for FM Broadcast?
This is not something I've tested I'm afraid
I love it ! Wish it had a limiter. I’m to much of a noob to know if a hardware limiter can simply be added to an audio chain like a cloud lifter is added. Or if a daw out there exists that can preset a limiter and limit clipping in real-time but this may be my choice over the rodecaster
The issue is analogue clipping can be introduced at any point so it's best to ensure you have all your levels within the chain under 0db
Do you think the “hold button for voice effect” (e.g. reverb) function will ever be included to a new firmware of the rodecaster?
That's a question you'd need to ask Rode
mike thanks for the video. I am fairly lost in trying to operate it. Very new to such tech stuff. I am thinking the best approach for me would be to hire (yes, pay someone) to give me individual instruction to get to a point where I don't feel I am trying to hike mount Everest in tennis shoes. Can you advise me on this? thank you.
Feel free to reach out to us musicradiocreative.com/contact or drop a post in our community community.musicradiocreative.com/
sweet =)
👍
I am trying to do the firmware update but it says the file is corrupt. does anyone have a solution for this?
Mike great video, i just purchased this. Can you do a video on how to work with Adobe audition? I am having some issues with the tracks recording over each other. Meaning when I select the ASIO MX driver the channels don't seperate on recording properlly. It records on all the channels.
The Tascam Mixcast 4 is a 14 in 2 out USB interface, multitrack recording is to SD card.
@@MikeRussell Thanks Mike. Will it seperate channels after recording to or will one have to begin the edit on one channel?
You can record the separate channels on the SD card and then use those tracks to create your output.
@@MikeRussell Thanks Mike, you need to do a video and show us how to do that. I love adobe audition and would rather use it over the tascam editor.
I wish that companies would add screen readers to these things, I’m blind, and the only recorders I’m able to use are Olympus recorders, because they’re the only ones that talk.
Totally take on board what you say but it's a tricky balancing issue as you need silence to record so I imagine a challenge to make desks that are usable by visually impared that still operate silently.
Damn I was about to get the rodecaster but just seen this on guitar center for preorder for less now I’m torn between the two
Personal choice, only you can make that decision 👍
Same haha. I was just about to do the same. Hey Mike, having used both, what do you prefer?
I use rodecaster 2 mounth and i sell, the music output is not the same like input, i mean rodecaster cut from 80khz and down all !
Hindenburg Journalist is a good audio editor of choice you should consider.
I use Adobe Audition as my day to day DAW 👍👍
Thanks for the video. I use a DBX 286s mic pre amp. Can I connect directly to one of the mic channels ?
Yes you can
@@MikeRussell great , thank you
Much more interesting is that the Tascam Podcast Editor is available for iPad? WOW, finally we can get rid of OVERHYPED Ferrite
So if your doing a video podcast its not going to be a issue with anything? How would you set that up?
This will only handle the audio side, you’ll need another device to handle the video mixing.
Hi Mike, bit late here, but is it possible to add maybe the Rode NT usb mini, using a usb-c to usb-c cable through usb-c port?... that's a lot of usb-c lol
The mic inputs on this are for XLR mics.
Can we output all of audio from the console out for like a live show ?
Yes, this can be used for live streaming
Hello Mike, can you tell me how you have setup compresor atack and release on mixcast4 ? Thank you !
Have a look at this video on setting a compressor ua-cam.com/video/lUBLxU9GZPA/v-deo.html
@@MikeRussell, thank you for answer, but i mean in Tascam Mixcast4 for mic line. I want this settings for radio broadcasting. How is better for a dinamic voice ? Please help me. Thank you again !
You'll get the principals of how to set your compressor from the video and once you know the settings to look out for you'll be able to set a compressor in any software or hardware environment
@@MikeRussell Hello, i know how to setup a compresor Mike, all i ask is what is your opinion about atack and release setings..Thank you !
Now that i’m going to buy the Rodecaster, then this came up, i’ll wait untill i see more reviews of this.🤔
👍
Kind of a dumb question here. I'm starting a podcast with a friend. Chances are well never be in the same room recording it. You mentioned it has a closed loop system. That allows you to talk to people in the room. Dose that work say over a phone, or a zoom recording? Like how when I was a engineer at a radio station. We would have a closed loop system. That only I and the djs could hear. While the audience heard intros, or bumpers. While they waited for me to cue them in. Dose it work the same way?
You can have a talk back with a remote guest as long the mic and remote channels are not live
@@MikeRussell thanks a lot. I was looking at the rode ones, and I don't recall them having that feature. Maybe I missed it in the dozens of videos of I have seen about them. I do like how this seems to have more of a analog feeling, and the fact that It when I look at it. I know what everything dose. As looks like a normal mixing board.
Mike,
Does this work with USB Microphones?
Thank you,
Tommy
No, this is designed for regular microphones. USB microphones plug directly into your computer.
I have a question and wanted to know if this console works as an audio interface for live stream as well? and I was thinking about the tascam model 12 bit this I think it has what I need and I wanted to know if the preamps are the same as in the model 12? Thanks
This can be used as a livestream mixer but be aware the USB output to PC is stereo mic only.
@@MikeRussell UGH WHAT?! You can’t isolate tracks like the Zoom L8?
Comparing rodecaster pro2 in sound quality which one is better?
All are fine. It depends on use case. I currently use a Mackie DLZ.
Does it has loopback features ?
You can configure this via vb Audio Cable (PC) or Loopback (Mac)
Can I usa tascam mixcast 4 to run a radio station on line an go livestream?
Hi Roberto, you could do if you chose although it's not a dedicated radio desk so lacks some features of a radio desk but does come at a fraction of the cost of a radio desk
What do you think about it comparing to Rodecaster Pro?
They each have their benefits and a slightly different way of being great podcast desks
@@MikeRussell Which are these? I´m just in the decisionmaking process, too.
I know nothing about Mike Russell but you typically can't expect new product UA-camrs to answer a question like that. They get the product from a manufacturer without paying for it. If they give honest opinions and don't like a product they run the risk of losing access to future new product releases and their channel is dead in the water unless they want to pay for new review equipment themselves (which hardly any want to do). I'd suggest asking your question on a Reddit forum after real people have a chance to use the product for a while.
I can't find the product anywhere, including from TASCAM! Are you not telling us something?
It is out as of today, I am waiting for a confirmation on where it can be purchased - will update the video description as soon as I have it.
@@MikeRussell wow thanks for the quick response! You guys rock!
How much gain do the preamps provide?
Gain range is 66.5 dB
Can I edit multiple projects into one ?
Once you have the files in your DAW you can edit however you chose 👍
Mike would you take it over the othrs?
It's a matter of personal choice and preference
@@MikeRussell Mike if you were stranded on a island and had one podcast left to do. Would you chose Rodecaster pro? Would you choose Zoom podtrak8 or would you choose Tascam MX4?
Excited to see more 'podcast' mixer. But this is 99% a Rodecaster Pro. The ONLY differences I can see ( from this video ) is 1) the Voice Effect button ( that's cool) and the 2) "free multitrack software" - You can multi track with Audition ( but yea $$). 3) the Talk back .
I would encourage the mixers to adopt more 'broadcast' qualities like multiple outputs (Prg/Aud).
Fair points Shawn but the price point between these podcast desks and professional radio desks with PGM/Aud output is huge. I guess also the requirements of podcasters and radio are so different it's tough to make a desk that's fully functioning for both within a reasonable prosumer price range.
@@MikeRussell This could be used for radio too, don't you think? Having the ability to take calls, etc or have a guest DJ with something like this makes an internet radio station more like a regular over air station, in my opinion.
Hi Bill. I’ve certainly heard of online stations using the Rodecaster for broadcasting so there’s no reason this couldn’t be as well.
@@MikeRussell thank you Mr. Russell King of the Jingle, DJ drop, intros, voices and Adobe Audition presets. And thank you for all the knowledge you impart to us freely so we can become better presenters and professionals. Cheers.
Thanks Bill
Are the four microphone inputs also line inputs?
The desk does come with a decidated line input
@@MikeRussell This is not an answer for Edes question. I would like to know as well: are the 4 mic-inputs also line inputs - it is important if you need 2, 3 or 4 line inputs simultaneously. There's only one dedicated line input, so I think the question is justified.
I still love the Rodecaster Pro but this is a serious competition especially with the looks.
I agree. Let’s hope Rode adds some of these features with their next update.
👍🏾
Would this work with PA speakers, like for a regular mixer for karaoke etc?
Typical mixers are so boring looking compared to this type.
Has anyone tried it that way?
Thanks for any answers!
You could use is that way depending on whether it has enough inputs for your requirements
@@MikeRussell great! Thanks so much for answering my question.
👌
Does the tascam editor wirknin iOS?
Yes :)
Is it better than Rodecaster Pro though?
That’s something for you to decide. They’re both good desks.
That’s something for you to decide. They’re both good desks.
Yes, is better :) I have both and for sure i remain with Tascam :)
SAD that its even bigger than the Rodecater Pro, I want something half. the size.
There’s a lot of tech in there that needs to fit in somewhere 😂
Zoom L8?
you didnt mention the price ?
I try to avoid doing so to keep the videos green for longer. I will update the video description as soon as I have a confirmation from Tascam on where to purchase it from.
,thank you for the quick reply

@@MikeRussell Preciate it immensely, your podcast vids have helped with my editing skills and this product looks great to help me start and edit a few podcasts.

WAY TOO EXPENSIVE FOR A BEGINNER!!!!
It's an investment in your podcast. If you intend to build a podcast which you can monetise then it's probably worth the investmenet.
