  • The Auto Focus is very handy but sometime it doesn't work as we like, so it is better to switch on Manual Focus.
    Here I show you how to do that and how to use the Manual Focus on Nikon Coolpix P900.
    A big thanks to everyone continue to watch my videos and support my channel.

    The P900's worst feature, IMO, is the focus (auto is not great, but manual is terrible). Fortunately, I knew about this terrible flaw when I bought the camera (used). I bought this specifically for the long reach. I use it for birding, so I was willing to put up with the sub-standard focus features in order to have a cheap camera in which I could learn more about what I want and what I really need for basic satisfaction.
    The manual focus takes too much time to select. It is difficult to use for multiple reasons. Using the side button to focus, the response time seems to be forever. I was trying to use the side lever/button to focus on a bird. During that time, the bird flew away, migrated to South America for a half year and returned to the same spot it had been in. Fortunately, I was ready with the focus by then. OK, I exaggerate, but it is maddening.
    As for focusing by rotating the ring, that is a frustrating endeavor as well. All users should expect to fail at times, especially if one's skin is dry, hard and not very gripping due to the temperature being just less than warm outside. I have the fingers of a middle-aged man. The skin is somewhat smooth and also harder than that of a younger person. It slides across the ring instead of rotating it. The ring was supposedly designed to avoid slipping across fingers by having ridges on the ring, but the ridges are small enough to be invisible to an electron microscope. OK, I exaggerate again but the ridges are needlessly shallow in their relief. I have heard from others the same complaint. The ring will often not rotate unless you press hard enough to force it to resist your skin. However, if you press harder, the ring reacts as if you pushed in the side, top or bottom, as one would do for the intention of selecting either the exposure adjustment, flash function, timer, or focus type.
    When the focus ring does finally respond to gentle nudging, you really don't get a good sense that it is responding for long distance shifts in focus. On top of that problem, the indication scale in the viewfinder is so short that it is useless, especially for distant objects. Also, the focus feature activates a magnified view of the center of the original image. That's all you can see. When you focus manually, the viewfinder displays a magnified section of the center of the image. This is supposed to help photographers get a better look at how the focus is being adjusted. However, this feature is not something that works well when you have zoomed in to see distant wildlife. When the focus is adjusted and it zooms in even more to show the focus changes, the view is so magnified that you can no longer keep the wildlife in the viewfinder! Focusing is pointless when you can't see your subject! It's like trying to adjust features on your camera while using a 3000mm lens! It can't be done without losing the subject!
    Finally, the focus seems to reset once I let go of it for a short while. The feature may be active, but the focus is off.
    For manual focus, the P900 is a nightmare IMO. I think it is better to select spot focus. Center your target and hold the shutter button down halfway. Just hope that gets what you want. If not, point off the target and restart the spot focus process. Eventually it works, and the trial-and-error process is usually faster than the manual focus. If that doesn't work for you, move on to a different shot.
    I now hope to get a DSLR, including a good birding lens. Maybe next year even. My time is worth it, rather than cursing the lousy P900 focus mechanism. I am happy to have had this camera, but I want to be able to quickly focus on my subjects. Otherwise, many opportunities will continue to be lost to a needlessly poorly designed feature.

    • @boxmedias
      @boxmedias  2 роки тому +4

      Yes of course I agree with you Bruzote, the Nikon P900 is not a professional dslr camera, but it is very handy for travel, low weight camera to take nice photos and videos without carry a camera with too many lenses.

    • @SethNsk
      @SethNsk 2 роки тому +2

      I fully support. There, simply with manual focus, you can further zoom in to assess sharpness, and here the numbers do not correspond to the values: *1-*4, *2-*1, *4-*2. Obviously they are displaced, or I do not understand what. This and many other problems could be fixed ... But they spat on updating the firmware, even without finishing it.

    Fabio, thanks, great video. Hey question... I have had the camera for a few years and yeah I have the side switch set to manual focus, but my question is that when I scroll down to select manual focus it works fine but I have to do that again for each picture...it does not seem to let me manual focus each time unless I scroll down before each picture and re-select MF. Am I doing something wrong or is that just the way it is? Thanks!

    • @stevenissenson2531
      @stevenissenson2531 3 роки тому +1

      @@boxmedias Thanks Fabio. So I tried a bunch after my message to figure a pattern and its not as bad as I thought. Note that I tried it on A, P, and M and it's the same. But it does in fact work fine as long as I dont switch it off of that screen. For example if I shoot and then look at the image I just took and then back to the shooting screen, then I have to engage manual focus again, but if I just keep shooting one after another then it stays on manual focus. Does that sound right or is there still a problem?

    • @boxmedias
      @boxmedias  3 роки тому

      Here what I have just done with mine. I set the camera on A, and I set the focus on Manual, I took a photo, I pressed the little Play button to see the photo and when I went back to shoot more photos the focus was still in Manual. Even if I switch from A to P S or M the focuse dont change. At this time you should try to reset the camera. Let me know if I was clear Steve.

    • @stevenissenson2531
      @stevenissenson2531 3 роки тому +1

      @@boxmedias Yes thanks that was clear. Just for me to be clear, when I shoot and go to the play button and then come back to shooting mode, I press the side focus or the dial and nothing happens, so then I press the focus button on the bottom and yes, the MF is highlighted, not the AF but, but unless I do that and press enter the side focus or dial do not do anything. So yeah, please let me know if you still think that is the case and I should do the reset in the menu. Thanks so much Fabio!

      I find the focus selected drifts, even if the function stays active. Also, try using a P900 with dry fingers in cold temperatures. See if you can even get enough friction to rotate the manual ring before the ring acts like you're depressing it to set a function (exposure adjust/flash function/timer/focus function). Also, try to see how long it takes to focus from 0.3 m to infinity, then back, Do this when viewing a skittish bird 30m away using full zoom. Good luck. I still like my camera, but the focus features could be better, especially manual focus.

      As Fabio said, move far away from the city. In fact, move far away from everyone.
      Modern suburbs are equally too bright, and even "country" settings are often filled with light pollution thanks to homeowners who like to light up their house and yard at night to show off their possessions. Nobody cares, but these folks are so insecure they think your opinion matters as you drive by their house at 10:00 pm coming home from a dinner and a movie. Likewise, some homeowners are so terrified of their precious property being trespassed that they flood the neighborhood with light, as if they live in a secure facility protecting the crown jewels. What a sad joke they play on all of us.

    How to zoom moon sir

    • @boxmedias
      @boxmedias  Рік тому +1

      You need a good tripod first, then you have 2 options, you can set on SCENE and select MOON, or you can set on AUTO or A and zoom on the moon.

      That happen if you use the maximum zoom, the Coolpix is not a dslr camera. But really I dont think the focus is very slow.

      I use mine for birding and I usually give up in situations requiring manual focus. I try spot focus. If it doesn't work due to intervening branches or other things, I try pointing the camera off-subject and back again, then depressing the shutter button half-way again to regain focus. Sometimes I even have to do this six or seven times before getting a good focus, but that still beats trying the manual method.

    Does anyone else's camera make scary loud freaky noises while they zoom in & out?
    I just got this thing on Saturday. It's brand new "refurbished" camera so I don't know if it's normal or maybe it just wasn't refurbished good enough?

      If you have a P900, that does NOT sound normal.
