    This documentary is doing what it set out to do, though. My husband works at a taproom in a larger city in the Midwest. Most of his co-workers are college students who spend most of their shift gossiping about other co-workers or talking about their classes, but yesterday he walked in on a large group of them in the break room having a serious discussion about fish consumption after they watched Seaspiracy. Same goes for when they where they go to West Africa. Why interview only one local activist? Why not introduce local problematics before saying all those people are “just hungry” so they “can’t do anything poor ones”. I just wonder if people will remain vegan if their reasons are founded in environmental reasons that are subject to change. If we reached a point of 'sustainable fish farming', or even if that could just be sold to someone, then your core reason for going vegan is gone. If you're vegan for ethics, theres no changing that (generally speaking). And ofc - how many people will be cutting fish but upping chicken?

    • @aaldrikbakker
      @aaldrikbakker 3 роки тому +5

      @@pgp519 well, how they start is not really a thing I believe. For example; if someone starts to be vegan for health reasons, eventually it's more likely they will find out about the ethical reasons because when you don't longer consume the animals, you can view the harming of the animals more objectivly without the gult they felt before. Same for the environment. And second; it doesn't matter wich reasons they become vegan - as long as it's benifits the animals and the environment, in that context the intent is not important - as long as they find a way for themselves to keep "going". And that's what you mean. But how they start is less relevenat, because some do it at first for health reasons, others for environment, but in the end they will come to the ethical reasons one way or the other. They don't have to start with it. Lots of vegans make this mistake and focus too much about the "intent" in stead of the psychological human yourney everyone goes to. And that's not linear as in; they MUST start with ethics.

    • @FroscoTraining
      @FroscoTraining 3 роки тому

      @@pgp519 veganism is an ethical position, it's not for the environment. Those who do it for the environment wouldn't live a completely vegan lifestyle but less cruelty to animals would a byproduct of that... They may end up going vegan though, since they'll probably educate themselves more than those who eat meat and developed that understanding. In that case they wouldn't eat fish since it would now be for ethics lol. And like you said, if there was a way to eat fish which is fine for the environment then "vegan" environmentalists would... vegans wouldn't.

    As a marine science student, environmental vegan, and person with experience in the aquaculture industry, I hope Seaspiracy gets people to think about the impact of their dietary choices and consider reducing/cutting out fish in their diets and be less insistent on only eating wild-caught fish.
    However, as somebody in the field I take issue with presenting facts about the fisheries industry (plastic, slavery, etc) interspersed with some serious misinformation about how the ocean works as a system. Whale/fish poop doesn't contribute significantly to phytoplankton blooms, they happen due to seasonal changes in mixing and sunlight. Fish swimming hasn't been implicated in coral bleaching. Farmed salmon get their colour from beta-carotene in their food, which is needed for proper ocular development. Wild salmon get their beta carotene from eating other fish that eat phytoplankton, which use beta-carotene as an accessory pigment for photosynthesis. It makes it hard to separate the facts from the fiction, and makes it easy to be skeptical or dismissive of the documentary as a whole because they failed to fact-check, or interview scientists who actually study these things. I'm mad they used Sylvia Earle (who is legit) to give scientific credence to a doc lacking in credibility in certain areas.

It is usually very very difficult to get omnivores to consider the animals they are already eating without using a little pathos and inquiring about the animals that they do care about. I wish that more vegan documentaries didn't have to rely on well liked animals and their plights in order to get some attention to the "ugly" or "food" animals but I think things will remain this way for a while.

      Of course if there is a clear way to go about it that is as efficient, please share. Besides the obvious Vegan goal of this documentary, they truly care about the environmental issues. Why would one that has the sensitivity to be vegan not care about the overall health of the ecosystems? I don't see it as a means to an end or as Team Planet / Team Ethics.
      'All animals are animals' clearly doesn't reach the masses. Not enough to make an impact. Globally we are closer to eating dogs than to understanding fish are sentient beings.

      @@haveyoutakenyourmeds In personal experience I think several things have to come together in someone's mind to make them decide to go vegan, and documentaries can help that along, but it's rare that watching any single documentary will make someone go vegan and stay vegan long term.
      I think you need to have something you already care about, environment, health, some animal welfare, e.c.t and that can get your foot in the door to learning about the scale of suffering that happens (which like you said, is pretty demoralising).
      And then if you feel personally empowered to do something about it through your choices, then you have some tool to fight against that horrible reality, as opposed to going the opposite way and not wanting to hear about it ever again.
      I think these documentaries can provide the knowledge groundwork for people, but the belief that people can personally have significant impact and the decision to make that happen is down to the individual.

    I feel like I’m weird though because I kind of care more about climate change as a vegan than animal suffering. I’m still vegan for the animals definitely but like at the end of the day I care about all animals I including ppl so I want to end suffering around the board. And climate change is such an important issue because if we don’t have an earth capable of taking care of life as we know it than what’s the point of we don’t even have animals or life in general. So I don’t really mind the climate change route because it’s such a big deal in the grand scheme of all sentient and non sentient life. Most vegan/plant based documentaries are NOT made for those of us who have been vegan/plant based for years (since 1970) but for NON vegans, NON plant based, NON environmentalist minded folks. Yet even we long time plant based folks who became plant based for environmental reasons still learn new things. And showing how workers in the seafood industry are treated is important for those of us who are interested in human rights, social justice issues.
    Sailing from San Francisco to Hawaii every year (sail boat) to Hawaii the increase in garbage has grown big time, and while there is a lot of fishing nets etc., we still see most is plastic bottles, six pack plastic holders, plastic bags, straws, plastic containers and the like.
    Go to the north shore of any of the islands in Hawaii and you can see what the ocean currant is washing up on the shore. Same with various coastal areas from California Oregon Washington and Alaska. Also remember waterways like rivers, lakes here in the states have plastic garbage that kills birds, turtles, otters and other wildlife.

I really think that some people (including myself) are either ignorant to, or don't care about, the cruelty side of fishing. However, in the grand scheme of things, saving the ocean means saving the planet from environmental collapse, so for us is much more of a driving factor to stop eating fish.
    Avoiding the actual end of the world seams like a far more pressing issue than the feelings of fish that I can't quantify or experience. I think it basically takes a certain kind of kindness and empathy in a person to care deeply enough about an animal to stop eating it - I have gone fishing before and had a great time. The doc just made me realise how connected everything was, and how obvious the issue of industrial fishing is.

I don’t believe we all need to have the exact same beliefs and morals around why we become vegan at all.

    for me, it wasn't really about the super details of the film, I don't always believe all the numbers thrown at me, but I thought what was important was that it shined a light on a lot of issues that were'nt well known for a lot of people. Nothings perfect, and if we had a solution for everything, we wouldn't have these issues, but slavery, over fishing, dumping fish nets in the ocean, fishing credibility not being monitored, sea lice, industrial fishing taking away from local islands, whale/dolphin hunting. For someone thats only been told and shown the damages of plastic pollution, this documentary is insane and I think it did a really good job of just bringing awareness about these topics. I don't think throwing the whole documentary in the trash because it skewed a few details or had a motive to convince people to not eat fish is a reason to dismiss what this film is actually doing, which is awareness on a really important topic.

    But the biggest source of plastic pollution is discarded fishing gear. It wouldn't completely fix the problem by ending fishing but there are many reasons to never eat fish.

    I feel that you take the unpopular view out of habit. You don’t want to commend something popular, so you come at it from a position of “I’m gonna debunk this pop crap,” and fill in your blanks from there. I found the filmmakers insufferable, but the information was presented in the way that’s necessary for communicating at a large and international scale.

    Fish farming is not really better for the environment than wild fishing, when the feed is soy and crobs, which the rainforests are burning for, just as for the feed of land animals.
    German actor and environment activist Hannes Jaenicke made a documentary "Die Gier nach Lachs" (the greed for salmon), in which he reports about the impact fish farms have on the marine eco system and how destructive they are aswell.

    I think it's fair to use the arguments that are most effective to bring about change, even if some of them might not be your personal top reason. But certainly the way you construct your doc should follow a logical path and not flip flop but include ALL the arguments.. compassion, sustainability, pollution, etc

    Thanks for the video. Some thoughts from me:-
    1. The basic point is well made: if the makers are most concerned about suffering to sentient beings, that should be said upfront, at the beginning, followed by the other justifications like environmental ones, as and where applicable.
    2. However, perhaps too much is being made of the makers 'pretending' to begin to learn what they already knew before starting to film, and commencing the project? After all, the story unfolding in a certain way, with the narrator somehow and to some degree identifying with the reader, listener or viewer is an artistic device often used for clarity and to evoke empathy (with the creator's view) in the audience. **I haven't watched Seaspiracy, so I am basing my comment only on this video: possibly the complaint is valid; even if that is so, maybe some tweaking could be done to use that creative device to evoke empathy and clear understanding, while also making clear that actually the makers knew it all beforehand but are unfolding and revealing the 'story' in a certain way.

    I think because a large proportion of plastic waste comes from the fishing industry, that's why reducing fish consumption was the focus. Agree maybe it could have looked into general plastic waste. This was one was interesting because it did touch on multiple issues including, ethics and health. I understand where you are coming from, but think all aspects need to be covered to help draw people in, and this was the best way to do it.
    There at most a few tiny island nations that have been able to introduce 'sustainable' fishing but creating fish free zones, and restricting numbers, but this would be a blib on the radar so glad they weren't mentioned.

      I'm writing a term paper on marine plastics right now, and the general scientific consensus is 80% of marine plastic is land-based, and 20% is from the ocean, so while not eating fish is a great step, it's not feasible for everyone (I'm talking LEDCs, not the west) and also not a complete answer. If we want to tackle ocean plastics, the vast majority of it is coming from packaging, which is the root cause to address. I agree with the rest of what you said, though!

    Like nothing else, the doc isnt perfect. However, it spread awareness. And also what she is saying is just dumb. Arguing that stopping the consumption of fish isnt going to help with plastic, its just dumb. Might not be the biggest problem in the oceans, it is however, the best thing we individuals can do. We cant control what other countries do with their garbage, but we can control ehat we eat!

    The movie motivated me to look into some of the products that I use that have "no plastic" alternatives. If we continue to support those types of products it will encourage better alternatives to be made, ultimately giving us more options. I found underarm deodorant, dental floss, laundry soap, and dishwasher soap that don't have plastic packaging materials. I'm trying them out now and already onboard with these new products. Even though the movie pointed out that a majority of the plastics are fishing products, I'd rather not contribute to the non-recyclable plastic waste. Since I'm already vegan (via a WFPB diet) I'm not contributing to the fishing industry, but it was still horrifying to see how quickly we have depleted our oceans. You gotta wonder how bad it's going to be in 10 more years.

Even if i Can see some flaws at what the health, it remains the documentary that turned me vegetarian And after something more than a year later, i became vegan (i had to built gut microbes i Couldnt even digest a sweet potato without stomach pains And having to go to vc like 3 times). Also i happen to believe that most People do not give a fuck about animals(other than dogs, cats Maybe birds on trees MAYBE) So those People do need more reasons to go vegan, thus i believe that those documentaries are doing some Good because yes you Can be vegan for more reasons than Just plain ethical ones. Even if People take this film with a ton of grains of salt they Will have make at least a start. So i believe you were too cruel, critical is Good but you are not a fan And it shows...
