Life without granulating colours would be so boring, imo. Thanks for this lovely demo of them. My new fav granulating paint is Green Apatite Genuine.

A Lovely video and wonderful explanation of granulation properties! I am enjoying how you present your knowledge in so friendly manner and the ease with witch you impart it is satisfying, Many thanks and I appreciate the review of knowledge that sometimes eludes me in the moments I try to recall them!

Awesome video :) I, too, was a granulation "hater" until I found how wonderfully it lends to landscapes. So many gorgeous textures and effects! The daniel smith lunar colors (lunar black, blue, etc) are amazing for really strong granulation. Thanks, again, for the awesome video and I hope you are feeling better!

Hi, Denise--I just wanted to tell you how much I'm enjoying all of your videos. I've been painting in watercolor for more than 20 years now and was one of those artists that just winged it when it came to selecting and mixing colors, using different brushes, and making the properties of the pigment and reactions with water work how you want them to work in your paintings. I stumbled across your Patreon page and ended up here--AND I'M LEARNING SO MUCH. Thank you! I'm off to check out your Instagram pics...

Nice. I like just about anything forest in watercolor so I'm easily pleased. I think this should be fun making with fog in a tone on tone painting.

Somehow missed this a year ago. Great video Denise. I love that trans. brown oxide granulation. Granulation really enhanced your painting - awesome.

Oh, that is very interesting. Thank You for explaining this so clearly. You are a great teacher : ) I am learning so much from you : ) This is an expensive hobby, so appreciate it! I can read it in a book, but seeing it all unfold is much more effective for me!
PS- I have terrible allergies, but live in the midwest....... I am nasal most of the time. You should not apologize for your voice- your video's are awesome!!!

Thank you Michaella! I'm so glad the content is helpful. I'm just like you in that a video is SO much clearer than a book for me. Yay for visual learning :D

You're a trooper putting out a video while under the weather. Hope you feel better soon. :) The color palette you've chosen here is beautiful. I felt the same as you initially and didn't like the granulation as much, but have come to appreciate it. I bought granulation medium a couple months ago and only played with it once, but it seemed to me to flocculate (settle out into clumps) rather than granulate (settle out into finer particles). More testing needed to see if I can control it through pigment used, kind of paper, amount of water, etc.
    Wishing you Happy Holidays!

Thanks Evangeline! I agree about the granulation medium. It was gifted to me and I never find reasons to use it. For this video, I was actually like "Hey wait! I can use that!" :) I really do love this selection of colors. The brown transparent oxide is VERY strong (thats where most of the granulation you can see on the painting is coming from) but I do love the tone of it. Rose of Ultramarine is my standalone favorite.

Good video and explanation. I read that the DS Lunar colors (black, blue, etc.) also have iron oxide in them.

I'm always super excited when one of my mixes granulates, for instance my black mix. I use pg7 and pv19 for it and for some reason, even though neither are granulating pigments, it granulates. Seeing the turquoise and purple speckles when I soften it is so cool. I prefer hot press so I don't get much granulation unless I use a lot of water, but seeing it is always cool

Thanks Denise!! I've wondered what use the granulations are for, I guess I'll have to study it a lot more 🎨🖼🖌!! I'm an oil and acrylic painter but even though I can do it, I don't love them. I LOVE WATERCOLOR!! I've used Windsor & Newton Cotman and 2 other brands, however, none of them stood up to the quality I find in Holbein. I'm trying to watch all of your video's to learn about watercolor much sooner!! I had purchased a Shinhan set but every single tube granulated so much that the pigment I was putting down would not stay!! I got quite frustrated! LOL! I had more pigment in my water glass than on my painting, so much so that I felt like it was all a waste! I love Holbein and this made me look closer at the pigment in the water. Holbein had such a tiny amount of pigment in the jar that I thought it looked like koolaid with dissolved sugar! LOL! SO.....my conclusion is that I don't know what to do with granulating pigmented watercolors yet. The hues in both sets were similar but Holbein was extremely vibrant, so pretty!! I appreciate your video's and would love to see many more! Thanks so much for all of the hard (but fun) work you do for us!! Please don't stop! 😄🤗🤓🐢🌺🌼🐞 But DO get better soon!! Have a great weekend! I didn't start appreciating granulation until the last year or so. I really, really loved the smooth colors - but now I have such an appreciation for texture! Happy exploring :D

I truly appreciate this video. I took a beginner watercolor class and the instructor used Daniel Smith's paints. When the blue sky had so much granulation, I thought I'd done something wrong. The instructor was RAVING about the granulation, but I didn't care for it in the sky, although I could see how perfect it would be for sand, forest, etc. Sometimes beginners need 'just the basics'. Thanks for reminding me that many different techniques and products are suitable for different needs. ;o)

Thank you so much Carol! I'm so glad the video was helpful. I have definitely come to appreciate granulation but still don't like the really heavily granulating colors. To each their own, but I'm sorry that the instructor didn't give a better explanation for the how and why of it.

Does the granulating medium have any effect deleterous to clarity (yellowing ) or lightfastness ?
