I’m so happy to find someone that felt the same about this book as I did! SPOILERS: How many times do we need to torture Alina? She did enough! Why are we bringing her back just for a cameo? So unnecessary. And David’s death upset me so much, too. It was just so the battle would have some sort of important casualty. Genya definitely deserved better. I was also mostly uninterested on what Nina was doing. And the ending… How many times do we need to kill The Darkling? Plz stop… I really wish there was a better way than a fetch quest to bring the Crows back.
I think David's death meant things were much tougher for Ravka with their engineering genius lost. Really pushed the other characters to give the battle with Fjerda everything they've got, like Nikolai with his demon, Tamar the Shu kherguud and Zoya with her dragon-form. I feel if they weren't given that shove from a friend's death, they would've gotten too confident with the battle and wouldn't make an effort to unlock their full potential.
You were so right about the Nina plot and the romance -- it's not that they were bad, but they just didn't really have romantic chemistry and as you said it was definitely too soon. I did love Hanne's character though, it was great, and Rasmus' character was pretty fascinating too -- I like the narrative it took on that some people's hurt doesn't mean they can be excused, some people choose not to heal, be better and change, some people will just be evil as fuck, and I liked that. Literally every villain in this book slayed except the Darkling😭
First of all... why you so beautiful??? And I do agree with pretty much everything you said. Lack of Darkling character development is SUPER annoying. And David... just stupid. I'm very interested to see what she does next with this story. Maybe somehow she will make it all better. Let's hope.
I haven’t read ruining and rising yet and honestly the only thing keeping me going is because I have fomo about king of scars and rule of wolves LOL oh and also I love nikolai 💕 I’ll be back to watch the spoiler part soon (hopefully lol)
Hi may I know which publisher your book from? Cause I’m planning to get the book soon. I bought SoC and CK, both from different publishers, so I realize book covers and texture really matter to me. Hahaha
After reading the dilogy about Nikolai, I had thoughts that the author wanted to justify Darkling. Moreover, Netflix did this when it introduced the political component in show. Darkling as a politician was right and far-sighted. He is much smarter and wiser than the main characters. Nikolay understands that it is difficult to be a politician and it is impossible to please everyone. it is necessary to take difficult and not always noble actions. He, like Darkling, develops bombs that can destroy an entire city. Zhenya, as well as the Darkling, uses Isaac for political purposes, in the end she is indirectly responsible for his death. Nikolai also understands why Darkling expanded the Fold to prevent civil and external wars. More people died because of the war than in the small town of Novokribirsk. That's why Darkling expanded the Fold, he was tired of the wars in which loved ones die. That's why, I think, the author kills David to enhance the moment of horror of the war. I think Darkling repents about his mother, he didn't want to discuss it with Zoya. Unfortunately, in book is a few informations about what the darkling thinks and what he is worried about. After meeting with Alina, he admits to himself that he sincerely had feelings for her. He is a complex character (we understand it after the story The Demon in the Woods). Unfortunately, Leigh Bardugo does not describe his thoughts, we see just opinion about him from the naive Alina, or from Zoya, Zhenya. Nikolai, by the way, at the end of the book begins to understand the actions of Darkling.
While I think the Darkling coming back does undermine the other books...I'm thirsty for him so I'm happy for him to come back. I also like the idea that he might get a redemption arc, even though he definitely doesn't deserve it.
hahaha I feel that. I was highkey thirsty for the Darkling in the original trilogy too. And yes I am SO down for a redemption arc, but we just didn't see that at all in this duology.
Wow I feel exactly like you!!!!! Loved your review, finally someone who feels like me 😂 I also made a review about this book if you want to check it out!!!!
