- Finnish Knitting Stories - Episode 36: knitting in the backyard & trip to Turku
In this episode I'm being eaten by all the mosquitoes in our backyard while chatting about knitting. A finished top, 3 new cast-ons, a bit of shopping and trip to Turku.

Jana, you look so beautiful in your pink sweater in your beautiful garden spot. Your knitting is amazing. The shawl is going to be gorgeous. You definitely have a knack for picking out yarns and projects. I enjoyed being in your garden, but felt for you getting eaten by the mosquitos. Enjoy your family vacation and relax. Happy summer. 🌸🌞🌺🌼🌞
I’ve really enjoyed myself knitting with you in your lovely garden. Also I am happy sitting inside without mosquitos.
That purple lace shawl is FANTASTIC!!! And, we live in Minnesota where the mosquitoes are also terrible! I can't go outside without mosquito spray on otherwise I am itching for a week. My great grandparents came to the US from Finland and I'm part Finish...woukd love to visit Finland some day.
Thank you Julie! You should definitely visit some day. We have lots of great yarn stores here.
I love this episode in your garden with the beautiful background, the chirping birds, flowers and with the exception of the bugs which didn't bother me, but I know you were miserable. Your sweater is fantasstic and I like the color on you, like a rose in the garden.
It is amazing to me how fast you knit! I love your pink cardigan. So pretty! Sorry the mosquitoes are eating you alive, but your yard is gorgeous!! Thanks for risking it so we could see how pretty it is where you live.
I’m so sorry you were bitten by the mosquitoes. They are terrible in the USA. I get eaten every time I’m outside also. It makes you miserable. Thank you and I really enjoyed your podcast.
Mosquitos the size of horses lol. We have cream you put on outside but you should wear pants. Love your knit in linen and the wips plus all about your visit to Turku. Your garden is lovely and the birds what a 😊 joy
HelloRosemary

Love this Garden Knitting Activities. 😌💖 🌱
Love the bird songs! Mosquitoes are very bad in Alaska this summer as well. Thanks for the lovely episode!
Love your outdoor setting! Citronella candles or shrubs should help with mosquitos. 🙂. Love the sound of birds 🐦!❤
I so enjoyed seeing your garden - sorry about the mosquitoes! Love your podcasts… thanks!
I was itching in sympathy with you when I watched this! Always lovely to see you, Jana, indoors or outdoors. 😀
Hola

Hello Kara
How are you doing today?
Always enjoy our visits! Have a lovely vacation.
So lovely to see you in the garden, the sound was great with the birdsong in the background too. I understand that you might want to avoid the insects next time though! It was exciting for me to see the little fox bag went on your road trip to Turku! 😃🧶❤️❤️
Thank you Gill! I always have at least one of your lovely bags with me. 🥰
I loved the outdoor setting nature wind bird chirping… it was uneasy for you but it’s beautiful and relaxing.. I would love more episodes outdoors. Vaaka cardigan looks beautiful. Always enjoy you chitchat…Sending you peace vibe ❤️
Thank you! I think I might try again, maybe in a different spot with less mosquitoes.

Such a lovely video, as always.
Hello from the countryside out of Falun in Sweden. Im sittning in my garden, knitting socks from scrapyarn and watching your lovely podcast.
Another lovely podcast Jana. Here in Western Canada we also have mosquitoes- they love me unfortunately. The bird sounds add to the peaceful ambience of your podcast
Hi Jana, you are such a lovely person, it's always a pleasure seeing you
Thank you for joining m here!
I loved the outdoor podcast, and I can totally empathize with the mosquitos - they’re huge this year! Love all your projects, but your sweater is fabulous.
Hello Julie
How are you doing today?
Oh dear, hope you survived your mosquito bites you sustained to do your lovely knitting chat for us. I get terribly eaten by the midges we have here. So miserable. Anyway, I am currently knitting lovely socks by Anna Radchenko from Ukraine. Loving your current knits. Take care and please look after yourself xxx
Thank you for joining my garden chat and a special thank you for supporting Ukrainian designers! Hugs!
Your garden is lovely. I like the birdsong. And the wind in the trees. Mosquitoes are a problem in Texas too. They are huge and hungry. Lemongrass plants and essential oil help me not to be eaten 😁
Hello Janice
How are you doing today?
I love your raspberry progress keeper. I also love & use them too.
Hello Karen
How are you doing today?
Thanks for enduring the moskitos, I enjoyed the birdsong and your lovely backyard. I did a bit of english paperpiecing some hexagons in your company.
Another great episode - a lovely setting for us to watch your podcast, but I pity you in your battle against mosquitoes! I love your lacy shawl - it is going to be wonderful.
Rosemary
How are you doing today?
Jana. You’re so brave to sit there with the mosquitoes. They are so bad here in Northern Minnesota we have a hard time being outside at all. So nice to always watch you. Love the new lavender color you’re using. You’ll look good in that color
Thank you Jeanne! That lavender really spoke to me. I guess it's time to try something new in my color palette.
Good to catch up with you again. I love your garden.
Thank you for lovely garden episode! And al the birds :) and cute black bird visiting you on the end. Sorry for moquitoes, maybe some repelent will help?

Thank you for your sharing. Keeping you in my prayers.
I enjoyed the sounds of nature in your garden….too bad about the mosquitoes 😏
It was beautiful to see you outside, sorry about the bugs. Maybe burn incense or citronella next time? BTW, the sound was fine. Thankyou for an honest and joyful episode as always.
Love the gargen episode and your cardigan 😍👌❤️
Your sweater is gorgeous. The color looks great on you. 🧶
The new jacket suits you so well 💙
I enjoy your videos so much. I really love your knits and hearing about what you are up to. Your garden is beautiful and the flowers are so pretty. I am watching you here in north Alabama USA where it is very very hot. Thank goodness for air conditioning. I am crocheting a wool/linen cape that I plan to wear on a river cruise to France in October. I have several other projects on the go also in knit and crochet and embroidery. Fiber arts are my sanity and relaxation. Love you bunches and I'm sending you a big hug!
Thank you so much Diana! River cruise to France sounds like a dream. I hope you have a wonderful time. Wool-linen cape will come handy in October. Much love and a big hug!
Hi Jana always enjoy our chats
Your Cardigan is so pretty and the lace shawl is too. Have a good week see you next time. Hugs from the USA
A little eucalyptus or tea tree oil mixed with some moisturiser should help keep those mosquitoes away. Tip from an Aussie.
Your sound was fine. Easy to hear you,and you look so beautiful in your new sweater. I love linen also. Its so comfortable. Your yard is beautiful! The summer top is pretty too. Lots of mosquitoes here in Maine too! Thank you for a lovely video.❤️
Thank you so much Beckie!
Love your garden. Sound is very good. 🥰
You poor thing, mosquitoes love me too, so I knew exactly how you felt getting eaten alive outside!!!
You have a lovely garden area, but stay inside from now on 🤣🤣
Lovely finished knits. Nice garden. Just getting out in ours now in Pennsylvania.🧶🧶🧶
i love the watermelon sweater. the silk will look great with it, as will most anything else.
Hello Carol
How are you doing today?
I love your beautiful cardigan. You are so talented.
Loved the sound of the birds. Hope the bites aren’t too sore/itchy.
The bites are ok, I rubbed some aloe on them.
Jana, thank you for tolerating those huge mosquitoes to give us this outdoor episode. When they started to fly by I thought they were moths or butterflies. I was scratching along with you when you got bitten. Your outdoor space is gorgeous and I can feel the temptation the sit outdoors and enjoy the warmer weather.
The FO that you were wearing is gorgeous. Seeing the buttons on it was so nice, because they were the perfect compliment.
I am so glad that YT suggested your peaceful vlogspace during Vlogmas of 2021. Your shows are a much appreciated therapy for me. Thank you!!!
The sound is great. I enjoy hearing the birds in the background. Your cardigan is very cute!
I enjoyed seeing you outside. The sound was lovely with the birds singing in the background. I too dislike bugs and mosquitoes are the worst. As always you have gorgeous projects.
I love to knit outside too, though I was sorry to see you getting eaten alive by mosquitoes. I knitted along with you- Cumulus Tee by Petiteknit in pure silk- I love the Thea top. I think I need one in my life 😊 enjoy the festival xxx
Thank you! I love knitting outside (minus the mosquitoes). Cumulus tee is lovely! I have it on my list as well.
Thank you for braving the mosquitoes for this episode. So appreciated! Was just talking myself out of making another shawl (I have enough really) with a beautiful special skein of yarn. Then I decided to take permission from you to go ahead and do it, because it makes me happy and gives me comfort and peace. And I just purchased some beautiful clearance hand-dyed skeins that I, again, did not need. But life is short, the fiber and colors are beautiful (like looking at a garden of flowers), adult life isn't always fun, and shawls, knitting, and yarns are!! God bless you, your family, your business, and have peace and joy where it can be found.
Wow really nice place. I really love your cardigan that you are wearing.
It's Janice from Malta in the Mediterranean. Thanks
Thank you for your Vlog x
thank you again for inspiring me
I watch you from Texas and very much relate to the mosquitos! I am currently working on a Nightigale wrap for my sister and a skirt for my 5-year-old granddaughter.
Hello Traci
How are you doing today?
Jana, your Vaaka is absolutely gorgeous!!! Thank you for this visit!!!
You need some citronella candles and spray and you can get decorative bug zappers that work on solar or battery for outside use too
Thank you for yet another great episode! Every week I look forward to watching a new show of yours! I love your cardigan, it brightens you up! It's a lovely colour and I 'm inspired to knit something in your frozen watermelon. It's the perfect colour for summer!!!
Hi Jana, Thank you for another great episode. I so look forward to our weekly chat, and seeing all your beautiful knits of course.
Thank you for this beautiful Video
So enjoy sitting in your garden !! I love all the sounds!! In IL today is 35.5 C right now and must stay in airconditioning. You are just the right thing for this day.
It is fun to see you outside in your garden! I am working on a sweater.
So fun to see you out in your backyard! Isn't it always the mosquitoes though? Every year I dream of a screened in gazebo.
Ohh, screened in gazebo truly is a dream! I've been thinking about white long canopy curtain from Ikea, but I think I'll just get tangled in it eventually.
Beautiful garden! I am working on a sock while listening to you.
I loved the outdoor setting although it wasn't that good for you - hope the bites aren't too sore. Great podcast as always x
Love seeing the outdoors and your flowers. I hope your mosquito bites have healed😃
Great
Your vlog is just delightful, a bit of light in our drippy, wet spring here in N W Oregon. I am finishing the toe of a pair of vanilla socks while I watch.
Your shawl is beautiful, I love the different but matching colours! It was lovely to se your garden and to enjoy the sounds of Finnish summer!
Outside is lovely but same as here in Canada the mosquitoes are beasts!! Love your finished sweaters so summery
Another great video. Thanks. I think I would like to knit the white top you made.
Hi Jana, it was lovely seeing you outdoors and seeing your pretty flowers and hearing the birds sing. I too hate mosquitoes and they go for me too. Your pink sweater is lovely.
Loved seeing your knitted projects. You were brave to continue podcasting with all those mosquitoes. I would have fled into the house at the first bite. 🙂. Looking forward to the next podcast.
Mosquitos look like they are very large. Very much like here in Michigan. Your pink sweater is beautiful. Please have a good time at your festival.
It is so enjoyable to visit with you. I love your sweater and your intarsia shawl will be beautiful. I am watching you from Oregon in the USA.
Hello, it is good to see you today!
You sweater and summer top are beautiful! Your new projects are awesome! You do amazing work!
Thank you Jean!
Your yard Is beautiful. The birds sound so happy. I love your yarn. The color are fantastic! I want to make a cardigan like yours .
Thank you Leah! You should definitely make one! It's such a fun and easy knit.
Woodpeckers bodies are shaped differently then other birds. We live in the Northeast part of the USA. We have 3 different size Woodpeckers that visit us along with Rosie Breastest Nuthatches that hop on the trees in the same way the Woodpeckers do.
I just bought my yarn for the Vaaka sweater yesterday. Your Vaaka sweater is very inspiring, I really love your colour choice.
Ohh, that's so exciting! What kind of yarn did you choose?
the sound is fine
Hello Carol
How are you doing today?
Your yard is beautiful! Hope the bites are to itchy.
I can't believe you lasted 49 minutes with the mosquitos! Right before I watched your episode I came inside because they were driving me crazy outside lol. It made my skin itch just seeing you itch haha. You are one tough cookie!! It was nice to see the trees and hear the birds in the background. Have a wonderful rest of week 🥰
I was very surprised, when I started editing. It felt like I was there not more than 20 minutes. I really love knitting outside, but mosquitoes can ruin the fun.
This is your backyard?!? It looks like a delightful forest out the back!
There is a neighbor's cottage right behind those trees. But the real forest is on the right side from me, so you're not wrong about that. We do live right next to it.
Love you
I enjoyed the garden setting, but feel for you when the mosquitoes are eating you. 😬 We also have huge ones here in Minnesota. Your cardigan is fantastic and you’ve inspired me to want to make a neon yellow one for myself in the future!
Hello from the USA. I discovered your channel from Isabel in Normandy. I’m hooked on your knitting talk which is very calming. I enjoy the life talk as well. That pink sweater is so beautiful on you.
Thank you so much Kimberly and welcome!
Your sweater is beautiful. Lovely outdoor podcast. I am going to knit the Misurnia top by Caitlin Hunter in linen yarn. Solar yarn dyeing looks like fun.
Thank you! Misurina is a lovely top! I think it will be great in linen.
