Such an excellent upgrade and a good sign of the line's health. Going back and redoing these previously existing characters is a great sign! Love that they got rid of the Happy Meal gimmick of twisting the head to bring out the third leg! Nice review, Robo! The satisfaction of ripping that package open, let's go! -Justin
If I didn't already have the model kit, I'd be all over this. A new scale-accurate astromech design has been in dire need for a while now. Looking forward to getting R5.
R2-D2 in the first wave was my gateway drug to 6 inch figure collecting, so I've been greatly looking forward to this figure. I have the Figuarts version, and I agree that this new R2 doesn't quite live up to that. But I didn't expect it to, honestly. For the lower price point, it's terrific. And, as a collector of primarily the Black Series, it's incredibly satisfying to finally have a proper looking R2 in that line.
By the time I started collecting, R2 was long gone from circulation and trying to find one to buy was ridiculous. Three figure prices; uh uh. Once this version popped up for pre-order I got it and it just came in yesterday, and I couldn't be happier. Although my top lens doesn't have a paint app :( Oh well. Still love it.
I got this one in the Mando box which arrived a week after the last RotJ40 wave in Canada. Combined with Chopper, it’s amazing! A little bit finicky but honestly a good release. Mine also some paint bleedings, but it’s minor.
This R2 is fantastic for the price. The SHF is still the king of 1/12 due to the paint, but for 1/3 the price, the Black Series R2 is amazing and comes with tons more accessories. A great upgrade!
10 years in the making and excellent review! One thing I'm curious about, is between the SH Figuarts and the new Hasbro, do the legs and feet have the same angles when in rolling mode? I noticed some interpretations of R2 over the years in various scales, got this wrong. Thanks Robo! 🙏👏 Now, more R2 units please!
Now you use R2 in multiple setting. Model Kit can be End Ceremony maybe use SHF or Mafex and repaint as Dagobah, maybe one R2 is Tatooine desert, and plain R2 for other purposes. I bet hasbro will give us a proper Return of the Jedi R2 with Drink tray later down the road.
I've been rocking with the model kits after watching your review a few years back. I'm always down for more astromechs. I can already see Hasbro slapping all kinds of crazy designs for those holiday lines.
I'm with you on the SHF R2. That's my definitive R2 Figure (in 1:12.) The detailing on it just looks so good, even better in person. It would've been nice to have more accessories with it though. If the new black series R2 goes on clearance, shows up at Ollie's, I'd consider grabbing one.
I'm sure we'll get a "sail barge" R2 with drink tray, etc. and an Ep.2 AotC R2-D2 with jet boosters (maybe even ROTS R2 with oil spout, fire effects.. with perhaps a charred Super Battle Droid..?) Hasbro's great at milking molds. Especially easy reuses, like this Astromech.
I always knew that the original Black Series R2 wasn't the right scale, and I'm glad they corrected the mistake.Actually, the MPC model kit from the 70s wasn't the right scale either compared with the C3PO, because I built what I thought was a full sized R2 based on the 70s model kit before there was an R2 builder's group, and my replica turned out to be about 7/8 scale. Thanks for doing this video.I greatly enjoyed it.
0:15 When you said 10 Years, for a split second I was confused as to why we were waiting for a new R2 figure since the 90s? 🤨Then I realized "Oh...10 years back is 2013..." 😐
I grabbed R2 off my shelf to compare to the new one, and they were the same size! I'm befuddled for a minute and then remember that I replaced the Hasbro one with the model kit with R5 years ago.
I hope I'm going to be able to find some of the new r2s. I want to make some customs out of them but I also want to get my hands on the older r2 Black series and have them be extremely weathered and look like it's scrap put together second hand. Like a knockoff of the r2 line in universe
I like the Jurassic Park reference to storing the little parts so much that I'm sorta down with the figure and that alone kinda makes the price worth it to me for some backwards reason.
Missed opportunity to use the word Artooculation.I have to pick up two so I can try some weathering and dirty him up. Now we wait for all the other astromechs to be released on this buck starting with R5-D4. ✌️
Nice review. Be careful storing the parts inside R2. That periscope pops out easily and can jam the head from opening. Takes some shaking to get it back out.
Figure looks great, and i can't wait to pick mine up. The only stirke against it is to be on the 40th Anniversary RotJ card and not come with a lightsaber 🫡
Despite a loose helmet, that Darth Vader is great. The Sebastian Shaw (with slight hints of Hayden?) head sculpt is incredible and verticle joints on both wrists make it easily the best BS Vader so far. Also very glad to have a properly sized BS R2 that can hold all the accessories and updated ROTJ Luke! Hasbro knocked it out of the park with these.
That original R2 might be too small but it still has some nostalgia and charm to it, at least to me. So seeing you throw him across the room made me a bit sad 😢 lol
I was going to buy that old R2, but I read some reviews and skipped it. i was overjoyed when I saw this on coming out. I'm not an in box collector, but i just cant bring myself to open a Star Wars Blister. I got R2 , Vader and Luke. This was the First Star Wars movie I saw in the Movie Theatre. I'm disappointed there was no lightsaber. That black wash on the SH figuarts looks amazing.
They always use the image that Kenner used back in the day. Any "mistake" on these 40th images is simply a result of Hasbro using whatever image Kenner used. Another example is Ewok Romba being on the card image for Paploo.
I'm going to guess that Kenner used the image before ROTJ came out just to get the figure out on time? I don't remember and don't really research vintage stuff much.
Nice little Transformers: The Movie reference at the end there. Gotta be honest, I had a loose version of the old 2013 one in my collection for a while cause my dad's boss wanted me to go through a box of 6 inch and 3 3/4 inch figures, and I never noticed just how short it was. However, now looking at the two versions side-by-side, it's clear that Hasbro really messed up a decade ago. I definitely want to get one
For whatever reason as much as I love Star Wars I'm not that big into the hero characters, I'm more of a villain guy so I don't have any R2 in my collection. I might swing around to this one eventually, but it's not super high on my list, I know he's beloved and iconic but for some reason the major Star Wars heroes I find myself slightly indifferent to when it comes to figures.
The Figuarts is probably the best but I'm more fond of the Amazon exclusive Black Series that came with Chewbacca, has the pull apart feature. It's kinda dirty and has most C-3PO eyes of all of them, plus the updated articulation that Hasbro added and then took away for the Archive release.
I picked this up because I didn't have an R2 all this time. Correct me if I'm wrong but isn't that new R5-D5 that's currently on pre order using the same buck as this R2?
Nice. All I have so far is just the old galaxy of adventures figure and the shopdisney holiday astromechs so far :P Can't never have too many droids though :P
Think a new R4 is coming on this so that's a start. Easily aiming for one version. Crap guess black series hooked me again. I mean I snagged the whole Bad Batch today.
I've often asked rabid Star Wars fans "Who do you think is the toughest Star Wars character? Everyone says Chewbacca. I vote no. Strong though Chewie may be, tough is another symptom. For "Tough", I vote R2-D2. "Why?" Glad you asked. 1. R2 was shot and destroyed by Darth Vader. His exterior was burned badly and yet, he came back after some polish and repairs. He must have a damn good black box in his core. 2. On Dagobah, he was swallowed by a swamp snake/monster. He was spit out and didn't even get a dent when he landed on his ass. He expelled the mud in his system a minute later. 3. In Jedi, he's talking to C-3P0. You don't know what's being said, but you hear 3P0 say, "I wish I had your confidence." Three cheers for R2-D2! Toughest Astro-Droid in 6 movies! EVEN THOUGH Boba Fett escaped the pit that burped at him, keep rocking R2!
Poor 2013 R2…All those years of childhood glee he brought only to be tossed like a Dagobah Swamp creature spewing him out. But all R2’s are tough. He’ll just dust himself off and hide one of the new attachments in spite. R2 don’t play…
I want an accessory of the grey tubes that go from his body to his feet where Kenny's feet would go. Has that ever been represented on any figure? Anyone?
Hey Fwoosh what's going on with Articulated Icons? Iknow they're doing that video game figure, but are they going to restock the store make new product like a Sho Kusugi figure with of course a unmasked likeness with the 80 Master Ninja? Speaking of The Master, how about a Lee Van Cleef Ninja, forget that annoying Van Patton kid.
Great update…but…🤦🏻♂️. Why no rolling wheels? That to me is major malfunction. Also, that 3rd leg is a challenge to open. Lastly, the articulation on the leg ankles area (?) is very limited compared to the originals. The older one had a ton more movement. Overall a nice upgrade, but very far from perfect.
Honestly I prefer not having rolling wheels, at least in this case. I want figures to stay where I put them, not slowly working their way to the edge of the shelf.
-Justin
Honestly, I had forgotten about the twist head for the third leg on the original, another strike against it!
True, really needed upgrade!
Wish it was more bright white like the original… but other than that..
love the accessories…
it’s great!
R2 is probably the only character in Star Wars that has never changed. He fits anywhere because he always looks the same.
He's the bumblebee of star wars
@@blueraccoon1088Yeah, but Bumblebee is always changing his look. But they're both basically the mascots. Lol
Looks like I'll have to break out the ole Gundam panel line maker.
Bought the Archive C-3PO a while back in anticipation for this figure. Can't wait to put them together.
never too many droids, these are the ones we're looking for after all
Looking forward to all of the future Astromechs this mold produces.
Robo, thanks for doing this review of the new Black Series R2D2. I'm getting him now.
Great review, great information. Loved this vid ❤
so glad I was finally able to get an R2 for my collection.

If I didn't already have the model kit, I'd be all over this. A new scale-accurate astromech design has been in dire need for a while now. Looking forward to getting R5.

Got mine yesterday. At lone last, after 35+ years I finally have R2 and C-3P0 together on the shelf. This is really something, I'm having a moment.
Love it when Robo whips out every version of a Star Wars character for a review!
Ha ha ha, I involuntarily made the R2D2 ‘scared’ whistle as you threw him through the air😂😂
Love all Droids. Can't wait for this new one, It's about time!
This R2 is fantastic for the price. The SHF is still the king of 1/12 due to the paint, but for 1/3 the price, the Black Series R2 is amazing and comes with tons more accessories. A great upgrade!
I love me some droids and I'm so happy they finally fixed R2-D2's scale. Like you said, bring on the repaints; I'll collect half a dozen astromechs!
10 years in the making and excellent review! One thing I'm curious about, is between the SH Figuarts and the new Hasbro, do the legs and feet have the same angles when in rolling mode?
I noticed some interpretations of R2 over the years in various scales, got this wrong.

My R2 also has that blue paint bleed around the main eye
The only thing I wish this had then hopefully a future release can solve it the ability to have the rocket boosters on the side like the original R2
I'm sure we'll get a "sail barge" R2 with drink tray, etc. and an Ep.2 AotC R2-D2 with jet boosters (maybe even ROTS R2 with oil spout, fire effects.. with perhaps a charred Super Battle Droid..?)

Thanks for the comparison, Robo
The model kit looks perfect if you have a designated Clone Wars shelf. The bright whites and silvers look just like his animated appearance.
that's weird, the blue in my R2 is darker and similar to the previou onw
Can't wait to get the Chopper release from Ahsoka, not sure if it's a rerelease but I missed the first one anyways.
Thanks for featuring my customs again, sir!!
Not a problem, always a pleasure to pull them off the shelf and look at them again!
My first short R2 lies flat in the back Luke’s Landspeeder. It causes less harm there lol
That tool storage feature made me start thinking i should look out for this...
10:51 Revoltech did one back in the day that was the right hight … I believe that came out right after the first black series one
I believe that last arm attachment is his communicator from Anakin and Obi-wan in ROTS
I grabbed R2 off my shelf to compare to the new one, and they were the same size! I'm befuddled for a minute and then remember that I replaced the Hasbro one with the model kit with R5 years ago.
The s.h. figuarts r2d2 will always be my favorite only because it came with those little tubes to hide Kenny Baker's legs as an accessory.
I hope I'm going to be able to find some of the new r2s. I want to make some customs out of them but I also want to get my hands on the older r2 Black series and have them be extremely weathered and look like it's scrap put together second hand. Like a knockoff of the r2 line in universe
