The Ed Sullivan Show was a television variety program that aired on CBS from 1948-1971. For 23 years it aired every Sunday night and played host to the world's greatest talents. The Ed Sullivan Show is well known for bringing rock n' roll music to the forefront of American culture through acts like Elvis Presley, The Beatles, and The Rolling Stones. The entertainers each week ranged from comedians like Joan Rivers and Rodney Dangerfield, to Broadway stars Julie Andrews and Richard Burton, to pop singers such as Bobby Darin and Petula Clark. It also frequently featured stars of Motown such as The Supremes, The Temptations, Stevie Wonder and The Jackson 5. The Ed Sullivan Show was one of the only places on American television where such a wide variety of popular culture was showcased and its legacy lives on to this day.

Ed Sulivan held it down 4 the Black community, back in dah daze, GOD bless him; God Bless Ed Sullivan, RIP
The Motown Sound is timeless, just like the artists, and this performance/group is no exception!
One of the best motown songs in rock and roll history
Written by Mickey Stevenson, Ivy Jo Hunter and Marvin Gaye
Yep! 🙂
I really miss Ed Sullivan, Don Kirshners Rock Concer, Midnight Special, Soul Train, American Bandstand, truely the best shows ever made
THAT'S WHY THEY WERE THE SUPER 70'S MY FRIEND . CLASS OF ROCKIN 84 HERE. ROCK ON TR !!.
Martha Reeves had a certain charm and sweetness all her own.
They all look so pretty and ladylike in matching yellow gowns and big hair.
Those were the days.
Love Martha Reeves & the Vandellas. Still dig Motown. Some great music.
When the world is very chaotic it is the perfect time to be retro
What a beautiful group of ladies and such a classic song. We could definitely have more dancing in the streets today.
Absolutely the ladies had original unique way beauty and grace. 😢 they really had some great voices.
Love their yellow dresses!!!
Love those gowns !!!
Martha lives in my co op still in Downtown Detroit,, she still performs, You see her and her girls in the recent years in the elevators, all dressed up coming in from Europe late at night. Kind of fun!
It’s so refreshing seeing a Martha & The Vandellas performance in color. I love them! Does anyone know why they only made 1 appearance on The Ed Sullivan Show?
Motown was favoring the big guns (Diana and the Supremes, Temptations, Miracles) and they were just as big, but the impact of that _one_ girl group stood out and unfortunately some of the other acts got lost in the sauce.
David Richardson tbh I recall The Miracles making a lot of appearances on this show either.
The Marvelettes, I don’t think they appeared on Sullivan at all.
Probably racism. Aretha Franklin had her performance cancelled and no explanation was given. ua-cam.com/video/-pqtP_0lCAQ/v-deo.html
@@supremesfan2 No, they didn't
Great song
01/21/24- It is the NFL Playoffs between Detroit and Tampa Bay and Detroit had just scored a touchdown and player was in the end zone dancing to this song and I had to come here to listen. Oh my mum loved this song. R.I.H.
I really don't know why, but this is indeed the greatest song ever. There's just something about it I can't explain
Brilliant song. Always guaranteed to get everyone up dancing!
Happy Birthday Martha 🎂
3 beautiful women singing a beautiful song to beautiful music what’s no to like.
Great performance. Martha looked beautiful here!
I loved it it's old school but perfect in this hard times when covid strikes.
I remember hearing this at the grocery store when I was a kid. Still brings me back to those days, the 90s that is. This song really bangs.
LOVED THIS SONG AND THEM!!
What a talented group! 😍
Wow what a great performance! So full with energy
Like a well-oiled machine. Look at them a-go-go. The Motown AND Dusty Springfield moves and all the rest of them. So striking. So cool. So beautiful to behold.
THIS WEEK IN MUSIC HISTORY
August 22, 1964 - 56 Years Ago
Martha and The Vandellas debuted at No. 68 on the Billboard Hot 100 Chart with their single, "Dancing In The Street." The single was written by Marvin Gaye and William Stevenson. The song is so popular it has been covered several times and charted on the Hot 100 a total of 6 times by the Mamas and The Papas who peaked at No. 73 in 1967, Ramsey Lewis peaked at No. 84 in 1967, Teri DeSario with K.C. peaked at No. 66 in 1980, Van Halen scored the second Top 40 when they peaked at No. 38 in 1982 and finally Mick Jagger & David Bowie teamed up for a rousing version of the song and peaked at No. 7 in 1985. [08/23/2020]
Don't forget ivy jo hunter as a co-writer. Great song!
The Motown Sound blew me away growing up near Detroit. I loved Doo Wop, New Wave and others, but Motown will always RULE... in my heart.
I think Martha looks so beautiful here with her hairstyle and dress.. perfect 1965 🌟
Martha sounds just like off the record here! These were real vocalists
Ed Sullivan Was Live Every Sunday The Vocalist Had To Sing Live
@@blkpanther11 Factssss.
Raw natural talent at finest!!!
So do Rosalind Ashford and Betty Kelly. .... let's say all of their names.
@@blkpanther11 I wish I was born in those times
It's nice to see the Vandellas here. Mary and Florence were so far in the background when the Supremes were on that you couldn't even make out their faces.
💛💛💛A TRUE CLASSIC😉😉😉
Motown R&B!😊
I can't believe how fast he made them sing this
Ed Sullivan was a jerk, a product of his time
Big hit
Great Motown Music 🎵
1:18 The Mystery has been Solved! "Let's form a big strong Line! Get in Time! We're Dancing in the Street!"
The backing vocals on this are brilliant!
Gracias totales por los subtítulos en español y por subir los videos originales en HD porque me permiten conocer artistas que no conocía, sigan así 👏👏👏💯
very watered down performance. These ladies were on fire LIVE. One of the GREATEST Rock & Soul groups.Martha is dynamic!

Beautiful
Sweet Angels ❤
Martha does seem nervous here. I met her a few times in the 80s and 90s. She was delightful.
If I remember correctly there was an issue with costumes...
A true Artist
I love Martha
Say anything you want about 'Motown' style, but we (the present knower's) of Knows, know Ms. Martha Reeves,, her Vandellas and Aretha Franklin were THE TOP of Soulful R&B, and only a few others since.
To my baby 🍼🍼 daddy may he rest in peace 🕊️🕊️🕊️ love your baby 🍼🍼 mama Annie Diaz 💋 carrion Rodriguez 😢😢❤❤
They look fantastic in those gowns.
So many those girl groups had beautiful women in them.
Rosalind Ashford ALWAYS had a smile on her face. ALWAYS.
She always reminded me of a baby doll
The song of the day !!.,
I just love this performance, the gowns, the arrangement, everything.
But doesn't Martha looks quite nervous? Her vocals *SOAR* when she's at ease, she's quite shy here. She looks like she was worried about doing something wrong.
She could have been nervous. I believe this was their first appearance on the Ed Sullivan Show and The Supremes and The Temptations had set the bar kinda high
@@Mike_Neal ...Ya can't blame her for being nervous.... The Ed Sullivan Show was a BIG show with a huge national audience back in those days...!
She does look a bit uneasy. Probably her first Ed Sullivan appearance
The tempo is faster than the Motown version and doesn't have that bottom end groove....I'd be nervous too.
@@Mike_Neal no, they did not. Martha and the Vandellas were the hitmakers before the Supremes, only second to the Marvelettes
Give Martha Rose Reeves her star on the Hollywood Walk of Fame already...
Fabulous
Nice !😄
These girls are simply "cooking at finest".
So talented! And gorgeous too
@@mattc2094 Agree with you highly. These girls were far more "naturally talented" than the Supremes any day of the week.
@@Leatherbro I’ve gotta say, I’m also fan of the supremes... but yes Martha & the vandellas deserve way more credit... wish I was around to see them live
@@mattc2094I certainly agree with you but during that time Motown invested more time and money into the Supremes versus what went behind Martha Reeves and the Vandellas. The Supremes received a lot more personal attention and polishing that helped them propel to the top. Lets look at it from this perspective, Martha Reeves and the Vandellas had a "product" and the Supremes were the "product", if it makes any sense to you. Martha Reeves and the Vandellas were singers, the Supremes were singers too but no where as talented as Martha Reeves and the Vandellas were. If the time and money would have been in invested with Martha Reeves and the Vandellas, these girls would have "blown" the Supremes off the map.
@@Leatherbro that’s true, Motown did invest more in the supremes... and their ‘product packaging’ (the gowns, presentation, choreography, humour scripting) I would have loved to see a bit more attention/investment on Martha and the vandellas, if I were around in the 60s. A lot of raw talent there indeed
💛💛💛
One of the greatest favorite dance Motown classics one thing 10-17 -64 it had to settle for two weeks at number two because of DO WAH DIDDY DIDDY BY MANFRED MANN WHICH WAS NUMBER ONE FOR TWO WEEKS AFTER DISPLACING OH PRETTY WOMAN BY ROY ORBISON
That my sister favour record,
On a hot summer nite.she dance and dance. I love it 2.
If you aren’t smiling watching this there’s something wrong with you
I have watch them singing no playback for the first time.
I probably saw this but don't remember it exactly since I was so young. Everyone looked forward to seeing Ed every Sunday night. It is not like that today. There's just too much on the tube, nothing to unite the country, sadly.
THEM IS SUPREMES GOWNS!!!
Singer on the end got all kinds of Rhythm
Betty Kelly
I read that they wanted to wear hip streetclothes for this show but were told to dress in gowns hence the look on Martha's face.
They seem kind of awkward in those gowns. I bet they had to borrow those gowns off the Supremes' wardrobe rack.
It wasn’t hip street clothes, they just had more form fitting dresses and were replaced last minute with flowy evening gowns. There are photos of them rehearsing for this show in the original dresses.
Martha looks like that drunk auntie at the family cookout lmao
Bhahaha.. but hey, Martha is pretty sexy too!
🥰🥰🥰🥰🥰🤩🤩🤩🤩🤩
I love them. I do. But they don’t have that “thing” like The Supremes. That electric, charismatic energy.
I'm not trying to compare, but Martha's voice is my favorite for singing unlike Diana Ross's that's why I would have preferred Florence Ballard as lead singer in the Supremes.
Everyone always says that but she clearly wasn't the money maker Diana was. They had plenty of rehearsals and if the label could make an extra buck they would have.
Them is Supremes' gowns!
Would you believe most of the acts on Motown came out of the projects?
Amazing to see the poise and manners these acts projected no look at it
Yes, she lives in our great high-rise co-op in downtown Detroit today!
How are you classifying most? Because that actually isn't the case at all for the bulk of the roster. That narrative has always been problematic but Motown played it up, so I can't fault the general public.
There is still a misconception even today that poor people aren't intelligent, talented and hardworking. Motown was a small business, but look what it and the community produced against all odds.
Most black folks came "out of the projects" back in them days. Thats why Motown had Artist Development.
Yes, that is Betty Kelly, Rosalind Ashford and Martha Reeves.
The infamous Ed Sullivan/Vandellas performance and the gowns.
Them is Supremes' gowns!! Martha stole them gowns off the Supremes' rack.
0:44 beautiful
What an absolute hottie!

YELLOW!!!!!!!!!!!!!!!!!! Multiplied by 3!!!!!!!!!!!!!
To my babes Johnny 💞 Rodriguez from your wife Annie 💋 carrion Rodriguez
Ed it's STREET not STREETS! Great clip.
Love this. They are so cute at the end with the pose. I just feel Martha's mic chord is too short when she's trying to get into the middle position but looks as if someone off stage gave her some slack to let her move more freely before the end.
No auto tune, No recorded track, just natural talent. Not like this mess they call music today!!!
Facts
Gosh, the playback is faster and subsequently higher in pitch than the original.

LOL! Sick.
Everyone knows George Floyd died of a drug overdose - he was not murdered; it's a scientific fact.
Officer Chauvin is a sacrificial lamb, slaughtered on the lawless altar of phoney social "justice."
Martha, so sexy and sweet. Great song!
I love how the band slipped I'll be doggone by Marvin gaye in there that was hot
Wow. Watching this, you can really appreciate how polished The Supremes were.
Yes, I agree as this was one big Vandella mess! Martha's microphone chord keeps getting wrapped and twisted around her gown like she never worked and walked across the stage with a mic before. And the Vandellas look awkward in what apparently were dresses earmarked for the Supremes dress rack. And the closing choreography looked like it was made up on the spot.

I think Martha is beautiful. Love the 3 chocolate girls. Martha and the Vandellas dont sing no long-dress music though. They need short dresses so they can bust them moves.
I agree. Them is Supremes dresses.
@@jackjules7552 right!!! 😄
Martha seems to lacking the power in this live performance than what's on the recording
They had less than two minutes to sing & get into the groove of that song. Impossible.
@@davidbetsey2437 They are professionals. They did a fine job.
Anthony Mainer....Martha's microphone volume wasn't turned up enough....
Sometimes it's hard to get a good vocal balance when the group is only doing one song...
She couldn’t be too soulful.... definitely she was watered down..
A girl I knew hated this song. Every guy grab a girl. She was crazy
Why don't you tell us???
JLC
That caused the breakdown in our infrastructure
In spite of the many positive comments, I detected something wrong here. The energy and gaiety seem forced rather than spontaneous. The dancers seem to be mechanically going through the motions, rather than really dancing expressively, which seems strange for a song that is about dancing. Martha seems to be holding back, both vocally and emotionally. And I can not figure out why the cities of New Orleans and New York are specified, what do they have in common in this regard?
Nonsense
NYCNYCNYCNYCNYCNYCNYC
That was one thin lady, but she looked good as opposed to skinny with no appeal.
Not the best showing but what the hell
Who the F played the music tho?
