- Are fishing kayaks worth it? The simple answer, yes. I have absolutely loved getting into kayak fishing. In this video I take out my new Old Town Sportsman 106 pdl out for my first fishing session. Hope you enjoy this little backcountry adventure!

Glad you liked those old town kayaks best Maine has to offer! Best kayaks out there, totally not biased based on living in Old Town
Only late to this video because I was out fishing 👍
Any luck?
@@JaySiemens a few small pike. My main walleye lake had multiple nets across the only inflow before the season started so its pretty dead.
Nice looking Kayak!! Looking forward to breaking out the canoe here soon and getting out and doing some close to shoreline fishing!
Thats great!! Best of luck!
Jay Siemens Managed to get out on Sunday for two hours with the canoe and my 5 year old daughter outfished me 7 to 1 in 90 minutes.. wind came up and had to bounce! Felt good to get out and catch some Walleyes!!
You need wheels. Makes those long drags a little easier.
I think they are both sams kayaks
Makes sense as jay is Sam’s support team leader
Can't stress enough about wearing a PFD. Hear in Colorado there's been 4 drownings already this year. Always wear your PFD
And don’t drink and boat!
Do not get to cocky that's when you get hurt know your capable of, practice flipping your kayak and getting back in. I flipped once I almost drowned.
I've flipped a native slayer 10 and my pa14. Both in 44 degree F water temps.had ice fishing bibs and jacket on. If it wasn't for a PFD I would be dead. Scary scary stuff. Happens in an instant
Always!
Wow! Been waiting for a video like this! Keep up the fantastic work Jay!!!
Kayak karts make a world of difference. Love my Hobie pa14. Gonna bust it out tomorrow and fish for giant Lakers!
I have a pa14 and a revo. We just got off the water and I got notification for this video!
@@jkramer5512 same here, but single downrigger. The majority of the water i fish only allows one rod. Nothing more fun than hooking a salmon on a kayak!
Thank goodness you didn’t dye your hair blonde like your buddy Aaron!!!
I think Jay could pull it off. It would look more natural on him than Aaron.
@@thomaslooker7610 yea but Aaron’s was classic homeless man 😂
All natural
Jay versus clay kayak fishing
You are now officially hooked (pun intended) .
For over 40 years I've paddle fished from both canoes and kayaks.
From small no motor lakes to the skinniest mangrove shorelines there is no replacement for paddle craft.
I agree get a cart.
Rotomold wears through fast.
Good to know! Thanks so much!
Fly fishing? I loved your fly fishing for Muskie vid
Sooooon!
I can’t wait!
I've got a Jackson cusa FD and I love it. If I'm fishing solo I prefer my kayak to my boat even, almost regardless of the lake (with the exception of the really really big lakes). Also, river trip on the kayak are amazing. You have to plan a put in in take out, but it's awesome being able to cover a ton of ground in a river your otherwise wouldn't touch unless you had a small jetboat.
What is that yellow braid you use? it looks like it has really smooth casting
Looks like power pro, most likely the superslick v2
@@FishingOD_OFFICIAL definitely superslick v2 I have the same on my Stradic
Yup Power Pro
I bought it, put it on, casted it. Improved by 20 percent. Ty all
I mainly fish lakes that don't have public boat access. Gotta play that advantage as a kayak angler.
Great approach!
Things I've learned from my first time out in my Old Town Sportsman:
1. Get some kayak wheels, there fold up neatly and you dont need to drag it anywhere.
2. The instant reverse is amazing. Without taking my hands off the rod I could spot lock next to heavy current simply by a couple pedals forward, one back...
3. The slot below the seat is perfect for your tackle tray. No need to turn around to tie something else on.
4....
I guess those were the major points lol. Cheers Jay!
Those are great tips!! Thank you!
Look into an anchor trolley and an anchor wizard or a retractable clothesline with 50’ of 595 paracord. Add a 5 lb anchor with 20-50’ of anchor line. You’ll love being able to anchor and position the kayak perfectly and stay put in a stiff breeze.
Jay this was super informative thanks. Do you think it's stable enough to throw flies from the kayak?
I fly fish from mine all the time
I have the same kayak and it’s supper stable.
Yes!
it’s crazy how you’re going so much in last last few months. i’ve been subbed since like 30ish k!
Awesome!! Thanks for that!
Small kayaks like a Teton are worth it.
I can take that thing anywhere other than DEEP onto Lake St. Clair. (Then again, you shouldn’t take ANY kayak deep onto Lake St. Clair due to ignorant boaters).
Once you start spending a couple grand it’s not worth it AT ALL. Just buy a small boat with an outboard motor at that point.
My favorite times kayak fishing have been when there’s someone in a Ranger or a big multi-thousand dollar kayak next to me and they’re not catching fish…while I am in my sub-$400 kayak 🤣👍
Flyfishing in the YaK would be great.
A hot tip from 45 years ago nice!
Haha I didn't have a lot of faith but he was right!
Malone makes a kayak cart that fits perfect for your oldtowns. Look up Malone widertrak. Nice yak man !
Good to know! Thanks!
I was kayak fishing today. Loved it. The fight seems that much more intense
I agree!!
Kayaks are a good way too get your ASS wet, & lose a lot of fishing equipment....
lost the top part of the ball handle within two days, happy to see im not the only one lol
Basin' for Bucks 2021! (soft serve at the Lazy Loon)
Man i wish i had enough money to buy one of these pedal drive kayaks i feel like it is so much easier than a normal fishing kayak
I got my self a $300 kayak and it was so worth it! It is the best burn for your buck or whatever
Bank for your buck? Haha I'm not sure either. Congrats on the kayak!
@@JaySiemens thanks jay
The what you have and how you use it is so true! I hauled my canoe into Abraham lake, Alberta this past weekend to attempt for lakers! it was wild with waves and depth but was worth it!
Thats cool!!
“That’s a huge bass, if it’s a bass”. That is funny.
Jay, I bought my 120pdl because of your content. I've seen many reviews but yours was the one that sealed the deal for me. Love the pdl, I'm a heavy dude and this is very stable, I'm not winning any races with it but it's still fast if I'm really pushing it. Love kayak fishing.
always!!!
Question for the fisherman here. Has anyone ever trolled for walleyes at 15-25ft using a split shot and a shad rap or crank bait? Would you recommend a shallow or deep runner? (I would imagine a deep runner would just drag on the bottom depending on the speed) Would a swivel be necessary to avoid the rap getting twisted up? Any advice would be greatly appreciated. Thanks!
Have you ever tried using your Livescope and jigging for walleye on the kayak?
Haven't had the livescope on the kayak yet but its a possibility!
I love my Feelfree Lure for my YakAngling Tube Channel and have done a lot by boat and canoe also but the yak is the best way to go even though there is a lot of work involved getting it set up. Great Video Jay!
Awesome video! Love the Kayak. Tight lines!
Thanks!!
I love my old town 120 pdl. I have the wilderness kayak cart and it fits perfect. If I’m not going far, I don’t even need to strap it on it fits so good. When I retire, that’s the area I’m retiring too. I have a cuzzin that has a fishing lodge and guides on lake of the woods.Great to see you kayak fishing. Thanks for the video
Jay, the concept of this video is interesting to me... you in a kayak on a hidden lake where nobody can find you and bass fishing... I think this looks like you're still licking your wounds from the day that Clayton owned you on the bass day lol just kidding man, pretty sweet boat!
Nice to see some content from NW Ontario! Glad I stumbled across this. We have so many great little lakes around here that you can't drive a boat trailer into. Looking at a fishing kayak right now ... trying to decide if it's right for me.
When landing a big fish with your net in your right hand, dip the net into the water on the right side of the kayak then lead the fish around the nose of your kayak and into the net. Be sure to keep your rod tip almost vertical so you have some room to give the fish a little line if it takes a run. Pull the fish into your net and lift it. You stay dry, you’re never twisting your back and you never cross your hands. Try it. ;)
You need Boonedox in your life!
I so like my yak, mine is paddle only but still so much fun. I’ll agree you need a cart to help bring it places
What kinda net are you using it’s looks nice and easy to store on kayak not in your way just pop it and folds open
I think its Frabill but unfortunately I don't think they make it anymore.
Awesome video I always wanted to try fishing from a yak but don’t have one yet😉 I am also a young fishing UA-camr currently I am doing quite good but your channel is so good I love your content been watching you for a while now
Thanks for watching the video! Keep grinding!
Awesome yak set up Jay!
Heck, I remember touring down the buffalo Creek with you in a canoe, on the hunt for giant bullheads 😂
It’s also is one of the cheapest way to fish competitively
You should lookup OKBT for their online challenges.
Love kayak fishing, actually took it out on Lake Winnipeg yesterday, couldn't get into a good position to cast or drift so I just trolled around, got one small pike. Amazing how much even a smaller fish can pull you around, granted I don't have peddle drive just a paddle but that small pike had me facing it by the time I had the rod out of my holder.
Nice rod sir! I got an NRX that is 11 years old now and it still slays. Those rods are worth the money in my opinion they are complete weapons soo sensitive, light ,and has lots of power
Definitely! Love it.
Man I wish I could buy one of those kayaks where i live..i have the money but no where around me has them in stock..i legit have no other idea how to get them:/
Ah they are having a hard time keeping up with demand!! Best of luck on your hunt!
@@JaySiemens thanks! Fingers crossed haha
Love my 106 pdl❤
get a C-tug. it will make a big difference getting it to the water
Get a power pole for back they make one for kayaks
Good idea! Thank you!
What net do you use?
Fishing kayaks are not substituting boats in terms of capacity of covering long distances, comfort and storage capacity. On the other hand they are incredibly silent, cand navigate in shallow waters and waters full of vegetation / wood. No way you can do that as well with motor boats.
Well said!
What lake is that called
Awesome video... I just picked up a fishing Kayak this season.
Thats awesome!! Best of luck!
I love my Old Town Sportsman ,I live in Texas crappie, bass, catfishing what I fish for.
Sounds so fun!!
Should have chose this lake against Clayton. Ahaha
Are they worth it? 100% yes! We just posted a video of a hard to reach place when the water levels drop and you cannot get in with even a rowboat. Big fish waiting. Keep up the great work Jay!
Awesome! Thanks so much for watching the video!
Great video! I am now wishing I would have gotten a similar kayak as you were using. I opted for the Perception Outlaw 11.5. The thing is a tank. Stable, but slow and heavy in the water. Pedal driven with a rudder is definitely advantageous. Also, having a kayak that can be paddled or pedaled uostream would be ideal. I barely could paddle upstream against maybe a class I rapid section of the James River in my Outlaw. One thing you may want to check into is a drift sock. That will help slow down the yak in wind or current. Would want an anchor trolley to use too so as to make sure you are positioned well...that and the rudder should be great. And as was already pointed out...a cart is a game changer for portage.
Great suggestions! Thanks!
Love your content
It'd be dope to see you and Scotty Green do a Kayak fishing adventure/review/comparison. He'd probably have great feedback from doing many paddle trips in LOTW. Great Video!!
Definitely! He's the real pro!
Love the videoo!!! Cant wait to receive my systemwilderness recon 120HD
Awesome! Thanks for watching!
Jay for spot locking with the peddle drive I would add an anchor trolley system. Then buy a small kayak anchor. You will be able to position the boat in the spot you want very easy and keep the nose in the wind.
Great idea! Thanks!
A little of advice, I noticed your net is just like one I owned a few years ago, they are only good for a certain weight. Mine broke when I caught a pike that was a little too heavy for the net. The top plastic broke at the point where it locks in. I recommend you fortify it at the Y where it locks in. Use either braided line or the old type black fishing line, wrap it tightly around the Y then seal it with super glue or nail polish. That will increase the weight capability of the net, if not I guarantee your net will break some day.
Good to know! Thank you!
Yes. The answer is yes. I love my fishing kayak! I can get into places others can't. I love exploring little lakes and ponds I wouldn't otherwise notice!
Well said! Looking forward to exploring with these things!!
I love my kayak for bass fishing tourneys esp. Its also so much cheaper than a big boat option. Great workout too!
Well said!
I feel like they put the seats kinda high up compared to a real Kayak. It would be so much more stable with the seat lower. Is there a reason they're so high?
I personally think its much easier to fish when you're a little higher up.
Also a little more comfortable when I'm sitting in it for long periods of time!
Where in Manitoba is this? Thanks
Northwestern Ontario!
Nice Video, you might want to take a look for an Anchor Wizard. Its worth it when there is wind.
Good to know! Thanks!
That's a nice kayak setup and sweet little lake all to yourself! I have a Wilderness Systems yak. Question: what fluoro leader do you use?
Sunline FC Sniper
Super cool video, that water was so clear. I hope the border opens up soon so I can go fishing at the lake!!!
Absolutely! Thanks for watching!
Definitely need a kayak cart. I started kayak fishing a little over a year ago, and haven't touched my 14' jon boat since.
Its on my list!!
@@JaySiemens checkout the Wilderness Systems HD cart.
As a kayak fisherman, the best advise i can give you is, dont forget sunscreen on those pale feet!
hahaha great advice!
I fish out of 200 pelican Argo. I crush
Nice!
@@JaySiemens thanks Jay. Keep putting out great stuff!
The way that pike was so aggressive
Awesome stuff man. This is my next purchase, for the same reason you have stated. More access to hard to reach lakes.
Time for some exploring!!
Kayaks are 100% worth it
I'm looking forward to a summer with them!
👏👏👏👏 ✌️✌️saludos desde Argentina 🇦🇷🇦🇷
hey what some guys do is add a scotty rod holder on the t slots just so when you catch a fish and net it you can putit in the rod in the holder saves you time or if you have fix your line
The Old Town kayaks come with a forward facing rod holder. You can set it in there while freeing the fish or tying your lines.
Wow that lake had some unbelievable clarity.
Definitely!
I love the concept of those pedal style kayaks. I first seen them on LFG's channel and I've been Intrigued ever since. Great video man!
Thank you!!!
I'm just getting into fresh water fishing here in Ontario and I must say, I really appreciate your videos. Would love to get your opinions on types of beginner fishing boats and gear also. Keep up the great contend Jay👌🏾💯👍🏾
Thanks for watching! No need to get fancy, take a look at some of the older videos where I pick spots using google maps or iPhone apps like Navionics.
@@JaySiemens Thank for the ideas will definitely be watching them.
Answer to video title. Yes!
This is a great video, as I am currently saving up for a fishing kayak
Keep going! They're great.
love the videos!! keep it up! when are you going to be fishing for lakers?
Hopefully soon! Thanks!
Awesome video Jay!! Love kayak fishing videos!!!
Hopefully more to come! Thank you!
Jay, great video. Just received my pedal fishing kayak and cannot wait to use it. I noticed yellow fishing line on your spinning reel. What brand is it and the lb test you are using. Thanks.
10lb PowerPro
@@JaySiemens Thanks. If one day I am up your way, my son and I would like to kayak fish with you, if you have time and don't mind
Jay do you think it would be hard to fly fish from the kayak?
They're very stable. It can be done!
Looking forward to seeing some more kayak videos!
Awesome! I'll do my best!
Love your videos jay. You need waaaaay more recognition in my opinion. And btw where’d you get those awesome pants?!
I'll keep working for it!! Thanks so much!
@@JaySiemens Hey I asked where you got those pants! ;)
What kind of net do you have? I like the folding aspect. I do a lot of kayak fishing and I currently use a small trout net, which can get sketchy trying to reach.
Hey I think its from Frabill but unfortunately I don't think they make them anymore!
@@JaySiemens sounds good, thanks for the reply!
Jay you guys should make Catch and Cook hot sauce
One day!!
Great vid jay! Looking forward to more kayak vids this year!
Thanks Joey!!
You talk to much!
Too*
Love your videos. I have a yak that I love fishing in so it's great to see a made in Manitoba video for this segment of fishermen. I also recommend the Ultraskiff for when you need back country access but want to put in a longer day. Way more comfortable and easier on the back.
Glad you like your kayak!! Just to clarify this is filmed in ON!
East of Thunder Bay is Ontario in name only..lol
