Fireworks are great to watch and even better to photograph:). Capturing the burst of lights and unique/interesting patterns is awesome! Regardless of your camera, I take you through the steps to make it happen. I used a Nikon D3400 for this video, but my technique/settings apply to any camera.

Which one would I choose? The generic - should work fine in my opinion and is a fraction of the Nikon's cost

Amazon Basic Tripod (currently runs about $17; similar to my Velbon in the video - low cost but served me well over the years:)):

Zomei Z666 (in video; currently runs about $90):

Dolica (NOT in video but offers Aluminum build and ball head but does not convert to monopod - a slight cheaper alternative; uses lever locks; runs about $50):

I’m so excited, I am waiting on my first DSLR Nikon D5600 and I had so many questions before the camera even gets here. You are answering everyone of them. I even started a file on your info so that I can find it quickly. Thank you
Thanks for the post/feedback Cynthia and glad to be of help!:) The D5600 is a nice/solid camera and I suspect you will get many years of good use from it:). Take time to practice, practice, and practice some more ... you will soon get the hang of it and will shooting like a pro:). Keep in mind the power of post process as I feel this is a sizable part to the overall outcome of any given image.
Since there is a solar eclipse coming up on August 21st, could you do a video about that as well? I'd be very interested to give taking pictures of that a shot as well!

simple straight to the point ... your teaching method is way down like I love. I have a feel that I will master the art of photography not just the basics. I am your fan from India and will try these during Diwali festival for sure.i don't know if before that I will get a fireshow.
Thanks for the post/feedback and glad to be of help!:) Best of luck shoot the festival - festivals are always a good opportunity to capture awesome shots:).
Was thinking about buying the Nikon D3400, and after seeing your videos, I am Gonna go for it, You are awesome for taking the time to show us how to get these amazing shots, new subscriber coming at ya
Thanks for the post/feedback George and glad to be of help!:) Welcome to the channel and stay tuned for more videos:).
I just bought a D3400 in 2020 and it's still amazing. It's my first DSLR and I've loved some of the photos I've captured
This was awesome..I didn't know that the kit lens was so capable.. You're saving me a ton of cash!
Hi Tom - thanks for the post and glad to be of help!:) The D3400 and included kit lens is fully capable in my opinion. Once you take time to exploit all the features, the camera really opens up.
Thank you mate. Great tips 👍👍👍 more vids
expensive camera or lenses don't make good photographs, practice will make you to take good shots with composition and lightning. just don't hesitate to explore your self and keep watching @realworld
I like your shorter time. I was told 10-12 seconds and when it was over and done. My shorter times 3-8 seconds were better than 10-12 seconds. I loved the 3-6 second shots!
All of your videos are made very well. I went from knowing nothing about DSLRs, to having my father I'm a pro. Thank you.
Thanks for the post/feedback and glad to be of help!:)
Check your settings. Mine has the option to release the shutter when not in focus. Handy. Great video.
Thank you for your videos, I've learned a lot from them.
Glad to be of help!:)
Thanks for the help!
Another great peice of work. Following all your videos. Thank you.
Thanks for the post/feedback!:)
Finally, now I know that if I use the remote control I need to put the focus on manual. I got the focus locked and he re-focus over and over again in auto mode. Thank you for the great tip!
LOL - ahhhh yes, I lost track when I first started using a remote of how many times I forgot to switch to manual when using the remote:). Feel free to follow me on Instragram if you like - instagram.com/realworldpicts I just started the account and plan to post more picts soon:).
Following :)
As always a great video. This will be my first 4th with my camera. Hope I can get some great shots.
Best of luck Chris - you can do it!:) Try to grab other events over the weekend prior to the 4th and practice, practice, practice:). Fireworks will go on sale after the 4th so expect more opportunities as well:).
Again a knowledgeable video, bravo sir

You have great teaching skills sir, thank you !
Thanks for the post/feedback and glad to be of help!:)
Love your videos. You've taught me a lot about my new Nikon D3400. I always look forward to something new to learn. I wish I could download your videos for viewing anytime but it seems that You Tube has disabled this option.
Great video, clear, concise explanation of the Nikon (Thank you). I am about to purchase the d5300 for my return to photography sadly as a disabled photographer this time, however your vid's have given me the inspiration to proceed with this as I feel confident in being able to operate the camera.
Thanks for the post/feedback and glad to of help/inspiration!:) Welcome back to world of photography - you can do it!:) Photography is a great/creative outlet for many (including myself):). I plan to create more videos using various techniques include my use of Lightroom ... stay tuned!:)
Useful content, thanks.
fantastic vid!!! the IR sensor on the d3400 is the little dot on the front of the grip... same as my d5500 which also has a rear facing one which is handy for doing these types of shots
Thanks for the post/feedback Andrew!:) That makes sense re the IR sensor!:) Sometimes I can get the remote to work behind the camera but more often I need to be off to the front/side - not a big though:).
Another great video, I’ve subscribed to your channel and I’m sure I speak for many when I say, your tutorials are perfect for me using a Nikon 3500 entry level camera. Your tutorials are a great way to teach me photography. Keep up the awesome work
Thanks for the post/feedback Terry and glad to be of help!:) The D3500 and similar cameras are very capable ... a bit of knowledge and experience go a long way:).
A great video and some nice pics you showed too
Thanks for the post/feedback William and hopefully this video provided some helpful information for your firework picts!:).
I have a Canon and I have a wired remote. However, this video gave me a lot of insight into how to take fireworks.
Perfect video instructions. Thank you , I was able to share with my wife.
Thanks for the post and glad to be of help!:)
Great video on shooting fireworks!!
Thanks for the post/feedback!:)
great video for photography........... thank you so much sir, have a nice day
I Found that On the D3400 the IR receiver on the Camera is the dark hard plastic circle right on the hand grip
SUPERB SIR THANKS A LOT AND IT MY PLEASURE TO PUBLISH HOW TO RECORDING WITH D3400
So glad that you are back!
Thank you for the video, I really was waiting for something like this, specially because I have the same camera. I will be waiting for more videos.
Thanks for the post/feedback!:)
This is something I really have wanted to try. Thanks for the detailed explanation of how you go about it. We have a huge fireworks display here in cincinnati on labor day weekend. If we don't go on the boat to see them I may try to get some photos of them from the top of the building I work at.
Hi Steve ... sounds like a great opportunity to take some great photos!:)
Clear instructions. Thanks
Thanks for the feedback and glad to be of help!:)
I have an 'older' D3100 and am excited about taking some shots of tomorrow night's Sternwheel Festival fireworks display on the Ohio River. Will be a bit of a challenge, since I've never shot real decent fireworks before, and I'll be sitting along a set of cliffs about three miles downriver. Tried it last year and got caught in the rain. Thanks very much for the instructions.
Glad to be of help and enjoy the fireworks!:) The D3100 is a capable camera and should be able to capture fireworks. Conduct a bit of recon in the morning/afternoon to determine a good spot to watch/shoot the fireworks. Get to the spot early enough to get setup and relax:). If this is your first attempt, you might be surprised to see what you can capture!:)
I posted the only pic I was able to take from last years Festival before the rain drove me off the hill. As you can see I wanted to include the surroundings. Sure is fun to learn. :)
Nice picts and hopefully you have better weather tonight!:) Be certain to check the ISO ... try to stay at 100 to prevent noise in the image. Post back w/ more images from tonight if possible ... good luck and have fun!:)
NICE picts with great composition/background!:) Looks like you were in a great spot (on top of a hill?).
Awesome. Thank you very much sir
Hats off!!!
Cool shots! Nice tutorial as well ! O)
Finally uploaded my video of the shots I took of fireworks back in November. Big thanks to you for this great tutorial. Have you a mention in the credits of my video.
All the best and a happy New year.

Can you do a reveiw on the bridge camera Panasonic Lumix Fz82/Fz80 please I love your tutorials!
Great video! Thanks for posting! Greetings from South America
Hi Carlos and thanks for the post/feedback!:)
Wish I had seen this video last year (2018), but noticed it earlier today before I went to work for a new year "Have a few drinks, and take the rest of the christmas candy/new year party 'things' home!" 'party' 😁
I managed to get a few good shots, even at my bad location.
There's houses all around me, and most of the firework was covered by them, but as said; I did manage to get a few good shots.
I even had a chance to catch a car driving by to get my first 'proper' time lapse photo with some nice trailing brake lights 😁
You never fail to impress me Mark - Hope you have a great new year, and may 2020 bring you many more subs, fortune and prosperity.
Thanks for the post/feedback and good to hear from you!:) I have been offline for the last few weeks working on various projects - just now catching up on older post/comments:).
@@RealWorld No worries Mark - I've been busy with work myself, and while I'm hanging out on UA-cam I'm not that _''social''_ when I'm just trying to unwind - I have some catching up to do myself 😊
But yeah I did notice your uploads have been "lacking", but I'd much rather have quality over quantity!
I love your approach to your uploads, the entire vibe that comes from them and all the technical info that you give out.
Just in case you re-read this comment I have a few suggestions for possible content in 2020:
- How to take photos of the sun without ruining your eye, and taking care of your equipment (Photo Genius got a question like this, and said exposure to the sun might/can do damage to the sensor).
- Star photography, specifically, equipment: ESPECIALLY if you're able to borrow some from your local photo gear vendor, else please don't bother (I really want to invest in a startracker-type-thingy myself, but I'm kinda strapped for most of the year - Trying to save up for a trip to Scotland and my license 😁)
I also have an "odd" question:
Do you use an IPS monitor or a TN/VA monitor? My brother recently got a new gaming monitor, which is IPS and while I've constantly heard the colour reproduction is better I was dumbfounded by it.
Honestly I'll keep an eye out for a cheap IPS monitor simply for editing photos during 2020.
Great channel, great videos, I've learned so much. Thanks
Thanks for the post/feedback and glad to of help!:)
Thank you so much!
I learned a lot thanks so much! Can't wait till the 4 of July.
Thanks for the post/feedback!:) Enjoy the 4th and be safe!:)
Thank you very much
you are always to the point....you r so good at explaining things...
you are* not we are, brother! :)
Leo Prem oh...my mistake... perhaps i was sleepy then😅😅😅😅
we need now some night photo video with entry cameras :)
Awesome video.
Thanks for the post/feedback!:)
LOve you Man !
You are as usual awesome Sir... Brisk, to the point and ofcourse mind boggling photography 😍 I never thought of bulb mode.. gonna try next time for sure 😊
Thanks for the post/feedback and glad to be of help!:)
I've got a d3200 that I use with the same generic remote without any issues. The sensor on the front of the camera is in the grip handle, there's a small plastic dot in the center of it. That's the sensor. There's another one on the back, that works very well too
I like the IR sensor and wish Nikon would have left it in the D3500 model:).
@@RealWorldMakes me glad I bought the D3400. Updates removing useful features are hardly updates, eh?
off I go with my d7000 this weekend! Thanks for the tips
hopefully you received some great shots! :)
@@RealWorld I did. I didn't really have much going on in the foreground but the timing and the settings worked out perfect. For only $7 that release cable is worth every penny!
Nice tutorial explaining how to use the camera for fireworks shooting. Had I seen this video earlier, it would have helped me take better shots yesterday 😭.
Super like and a big thumbs up for sharing this information. 👍
Thanks for the post/feedback Jayesh and glad to be of help (albeit late)!:)
You make the best informative videos, Thanks for sharing..
Thanks for the post/feedback Keller and glad to be of help!:)
Very, very well done
quite amazing
thanks for the post/feedback!:)
We are now in August and in the UK in my city (Plymouth) this means the British Fireworks Championships. Held over 2 nights (this year it's the 14/15th) with 6 teams competing over the 2 nights. Weather and health permitting, I hope to be there on at least 1 of the nights with my D3400. I do have the IR shutter release and I do have a tripod, so with your settings advice I am good to go. If I can't make it to the actual venue I do have quite a good vantage point near to where I live so I am hopeful of some good shots.
Sounds like a great opportunity for some great shots!:) Remember to disable auto focus after locking focus:). Practice, practice, and practice some more before the event.
You are good. Thank you for sharing. I wonder how did u manage to take long shutter speed and get those ppl on the ground stay still? Amazing
Thanks for the post/feedback!:) LOL - I thought the same after viewing the image!:) I believe most of the people were standing relatively still watching the fireworks which makes for a cool/interested add to the image in my opinion.
Very good video, thank you very much
Thanks for the post/feedback and glad to be of help!:) Follow me on Instragram ( instagram.com/realworldpicts ) if you like:). I just started the account and plan to post more picts soon.
Great tips! I'm planning on taking fireworks shots at Walt Disney World.
Ahhhh yes, I have been to Disney - a great photo opportunity:).
Can you suggest a location in San Francisco to capture the 4th of July fireworks? Need to keep in mind that places tend to be very crowded. Thanks in advance. Also great tutorials. Thank you for sharing them on UA-cam for free.
Nice content! Keep it up!
Hey man thanks for the video! I actually live in Carmel and am planning on going to that exact parking garage to try and take some photos. To be honest, I wasn't even interested until you mentioned the name of the town. Now I'm definitely gonna give it a shot!
Thanks for the post!:) Awesome! You may see me there as well!:)
I have nikon d3100 with wired remote 3 months after buying the camera I got awesome fireworks photos.
Nice and glad to be of help!:) The D3100 should is capable as well ... the trick is understanding the various features.
You helped me so so so much
Glad to be of help!:)
