    Great video. Facing a 90 mph fastball followed by a 65-75 mph curve is the toughest thing in sports to do. If you've ever played at a high level, you know why I say that.

    Out of every pitcher on here, Justin Verlanders for some reason just looked the most precise, like , the Cather will put the glove where he wants it and justin does it, it truly is a thing of beauty

  • @tigerpaw371

    One thing I have learned is that as you progress through the levels of baseball it is less about the "big break" but more of the deception and the ability to make a pitch look and see like a fastball from delivery to release point. Your ball could break 2 feet or 4 inches in the majors, if you throw it properly the movement will do its work but the hitter will be thrown off by timing and balance. Through the younger levels of baseball though you see kids injuring their arms to get these massive Klayton Kershaw like breaks by derailing their mechanics and arm action. This video was fun to watch though, all of these guys shown have plus fastballs and throw their curveballs hard as well with the exception of a little more occasional slower bloopy curve by Kershaw or the Yu Darvish 60mph curve/ephus.

    • @ashtonfronsoe45
      @ashtonfronsoe45 8 років тому

      +MaxL14 you know those "hard curveballs" or balls that break 4 inches are called sliders right lol... that "slower bloopy curve" *is* his curveball

    • @tigerpaw371
      @tigerpaw371 8 років тому

      +Ashton Fronsoe I know the difference between a slider and curve. I was just discussing in general, not many people can really throw a curve like Kershaw's and at that level it is less about the movement and more about the deception of timing. Then with some of the wipeout sliders it's the same effect but many kids try too hard to get big breaks on either pitch and often they are doing it at the cost of healthy arm mechanics...

    It's a damned shame that MLB doesn't encourage more camera angles from behind the catcher where the movement of the ball can really be appreciated. During the 60's and 70's that's where most camera views were shown from.

    Seeing this on the screen doesn’t do it justice, 2014 Early in the season YovAni Gallardo pitched in Fenway vs The Red Sox and I was sitting 3rd row behind home plate, He wasn’t dominant as far as strikeout but my god his breaking stuff was really going that day. The bite his deuce had was incredible, right handed batters didn’t stand a chance that day, his pitches would start belly button high and drop into the dirt. He prolly got 20 ground outs that day, allowed no runs and got the win. I went home and traded for him in both my fantasy leagues.

    No Kerry Wood ? His curveball in his 20 strike out game was nuts. Also Mike Mussina deserves alot more credit when it comes to curveballs. According to David Ortiz prime Mike Mussina was the toughest pitcher he faced because he had a number of curves and breaking pitches that all broke slightly differently. Knuckle curves and the like. Took the guessing many hitters resort to in order to hit a really good curveball to a whole other level of difficulty. El Duque probably deserves a mention as well

    the last 2 pitchers to throw very good 12-6 curves in this game that I've witnessed are Tommy Hunter of Baltimore and Colby Lewis of Texas Rangers.
    Their curves are 73-76mph and go way up (18"-24" break) and down as much as 4ft when buried. Colby Lewis's curve looks like a Knuckleball without the erratic direction.

    The way to judge if a pitcher has a great curve ball is watching him freeze the hitter. Another way is to watch a great hitter look bad with a weak swing. Sandy Koufax was great at this.

    • @greenngold4life556
      @greenngold4life556 8 років тому

      Sounds like Kershaw. Jose Fernandez has developed a curve this year that is constantly locking hitters up or making them look like high schoolers. That's part of why those 2 guys are the 2 best strikeout pitchers in baseball this year. Jose throwing that 98 MPH heat, then an 80 MPH curve has just been killer on hitters this year.

    • @moshlyfe
      @moshlyfe 9 років тому +1

      +Rob Gronkowski #Yeet #GronkSpike A curveball typically breaks top to bottom (the 12-6 curve got its name because it breaks as if it were going from the 12 o clock position to the 6 o clock position), a slider breaks away from the point of release, so it would move to the left coming out of a right handed pitcher's hand and vice versa. Breaking ball is just a general term for any off speed pitch (slider, curveball, sinker, etc.)

    Most of the pitches looked like they sank down when they got close to the plate, instead of curved left or right. One that curves from right to left, is called a what?

      A curveball goes gloveside and down, in case you didn't know. Just right to left is a cutter. Im pretty sure.

      +Crafted YT Second pitcher was using a sweeping curve (rapid drop with horizontal movement)
      Some of Cain's were changeups
      As I'm typing this, a right-hander threw a pitch that dropped and curved back to his throwing side (right), which is a Circle-Changeup
      The author of this video should have just said the video was filled with breaking balls, and not curveballs

      +Crafted YT Also, a cutter is a fastball that has the opposite movement of a two-seam

      Depends on whether its a right-hander or southpaw pitching. Aright-hander can direct the pitch from right to left by throwinga curve ball, a cutter fast ball, or a slider. A southpaw throws a screw-ball or tailing fastball to move the ball from right to left.

    For Kershaw, Cashner, Darvish, and Strasburg, not every pitch you showed was a curveball. Some were changeups and FASTBALLS

    They dont look like they curve much to me. Maybe curve down. I thought one that dropped down would be called a sinker, and a curve ball would curve left or right. About the only pitch i know is the fastball. Well, I guess it goes fast over the plate, but hell, that may not be right either.
