Toronto cold case killer sentenced to life in prison for 1980s murders

- The man who murdered two Toronto women in the 1980s, and was free for almost four decades, has been sentenced to life in prison with no chance of parole for 21 years.
Joseph George Sutherland sat quietly in a Toronto courtroom as his sentence was handed down by Justice Maureen Forestell on Friday afternoon.
The judge told the court that “given the vulnerability of the victims, the violation of the homes and their bodies and the brutal nature of their killings, both murders fall close to first-degree murder.”
She pointed out that the two deaths Sutherland pled guilty to were neither quick nor painless.

He came out and admitted it, the news story is a bit deceiving.
No death penalty is one thing but giving someone a chance for parole under these circumstances is not acceptable to most people. The laws need a total overhaul in this country. Public safety should be number 1.

I agree, but Justice Forestell referred to him as a “first time offender” even though he murdered a second person in an unrelated incident which I believe makes him a repeat offender, doesn’t it? Perhaps Ms Forestell needs to study up a bit in her criminal terminology? Or maybe she should give her head a shake and take up gardening or something.
He should get life forever for two rapes and vicious murders.

That option no longer exists in Canada, and even consecutive sentences will normally be overturned.
No way he felt sorry about it or he’d have come forward years ago to accept his punishment.

Sisters? The victims were strangers. Erin’s brothers have been in the news over the years. Susan Tice’s children haven’t spoken publicly until now. I believe that was her daughter speaking on the video.
Have they gone through other cold cases to see if he was involved? There’s no way they were his first and last.

So a 61-year-old man that never had a traffic ticket. All of a sudden kills two people. And then doesn’t commit any other crimes except for these two people he supposedly killed. I’m not buying it.
