Sometimes referred to as ‘dyspraxia’ or ‘clumsiness’, this condition is more properly called Developmental Coordination Disorder (DCD).
Movement skills are a fundamental aspect of human behavior, enabling us to perform everyday tasks, to express ourselves and to maintain our health and well-being. However, some children lack the movement skills they need to cope with the everyday demands of home and school, despite normal intellectual, sensory and neurological development.
Anna Barnett is a Professor in Psychology at Oxford Brookes researching perceptualmotor development, with a special interest in both DCD and handwriting. Her work focuses on the diagnosis and description of DCD, its impact on health and well-being and the development of tools to assist health and education professionals to identify and help children with movement and handwriting difficulties.

I have DCD and was diagnosed late, so I despise handwriting, I much prefer typing. I also have a sensory processing disorder. I am 25 now.
Same but I’m not 25 tho lol
same aswell, just not 25
Same here but I'm 34 *sigh
Same same its really hard I have so many helpers
me to my parents : mom, I have dyspraxia, adhd and dyscalculia.I am having difficulties in performing day to days taks.
my desi parents : (laughs) you are making excuses. you need to work hard.
I have DCD, I own it tho I like having a laugh about it and my bestie and I joke about me tripping up stairs and I legit at nearly 13 just figured out the macareena and I was about 10 when I learnt to tie my shoes
Tiacorn !!! Same I have DCD to at the age 6 I learned how to ride a bike and take a bath or shower at the age of 10 I learned how do a shoe lace I found out I had dcd at the age 3
Tiacorn !!! Ye lmao
I’m 12 and I still don’t know how to tie shoelaces!!! 😂 I was diagnosed when I was 11 but I still can’t do it :(
@@millyhearts I'm 14 and I can't tie a shoe lace
xd Flaming Fox Oh- well good to know I’m not alone
Anyone else have random bruises on their body from walking into things? I constantly walk into the same table and doorknob over and over, so frustrating. Not to mention when I have food on a plate and accidentally hit the end of it, flinging food all over myself and the floor; it's a nightmare.
Yep! I just bruised the same spot on my knee. I walk into everything and everyone
@BenguinGuy oh my God same
@@Tqueenboss1 rip your knee 🙏
At least you remember what happened, when I go to bed I'm always surprised how much bruises and cuts I have.
My bed is so low that I hit my legs on it like once a week
No wonder i coud never play sports normaly lmao
Football is my worst nightmare, but I’ve become fine with badminton and basketball
Xpert_Destroyer 4 I have also difficulties with sports, but I am happy I can do my favourite one. It may sounds strange but searching for individual sports helps a lot. I am also doing and individual sport, that Horse riding. I enjoy it and I won’t have to worry about letting others down. I even participate in competitions and once won first place.
@@artemis754 i just like riding bikes and swimming but i never whent swiming since there was no public pool near me
@@Maykay1312 that truly sucks. I hope you'll find something you enjoy soon!
@@artemis754 ye idn im almost 18
We can all agree the worst nightmares is stairs
Eliothebeast I’m surprised I haven’t been to hospital for the amount of times I yeeted down
YEEEESSSS that is true
same
No banister on the stairs?
HOPE THE STAIRS ARE SOFT ON THE WAY DOWN.
My dad is a doctor and he says I have DCD. Here I thought that I was a wuss because I couldn’t ride a bike and it took me way longer than my other brothers. I also have auditory, olfactory oversensitivity. Someone touching me is really weird for me and I’ve never spoken about it till now because someone might think I’m a really horny teen. Which I’m not. I hate people touching me. Oh and it’s also really difficult for me to do maths too. I also have an extreme difficulty with balancing myself without holding onto the railing or the escalator belt and I always hate stairs because they make me dizzy
I think I have DCD I relate to a lot of what you have just said, but haven’t been diagnosed with it
I was diagnosed as a child 1980's, because a specialist in this "new" condition was resident at the local hospital near me (Marlborough). I grew up thinking clumsy child syndrome was what I will be come.... Thanks to help and understanding from my parents and extra support from others I'm able to live a normal live.
I have DCD,Dyslexia as well as joint hypermobility syndrome. I was diagnosed with DCD and Dyslexia when I was 10 and joint hypermobility syndrome 3 years ago. I'm in some form of pain most days because of my hypermobility syndrome.
IT IS NOT A DISORDER...it is what I am and I love it.I do not want to be anyone else...I do not want to BE like anyone else. I am the happiest person I know in their own skin. Please call it something else other than a disability/disorder. I am quite, quite able of doing what others can. DYSPRAXIC N PROUD
@Meghan Turner
"Dyspraxic n proud"
Man fuck off, I'd rather be dead than having any of those fucking issues that drag me behind the rest of people, it's fucking unfair and I'm sick of people telling me
"hurr life ain't a picnic pal" or "yo just man up bro".
Didn't even choose to be born, yet I have to be happy and grateful and yadda yadda.
I know full well that what you are doing there is part of a cope mechanism (like we all somehow do) but at least be real in the anonymity (more or less) of the internet.
sugarkaneandchloe I definitely see my DCD as a curse at some points, I wish I never had it. But I’m glad I learned to work around it.
HAHA, that's funny. People say that about a lot of stuff. Dyspraxia is a Disorder, Autism is a Disorder, Anxiety is a Disorder. Just because you're proud doesn't mean it's all sunshine and rainbows. We suffer more than the average person, that's why they're disabilities.
It’s a disgusting curse
Having dcd is the worst :( I get told to “just do it right then” but I can’t
I’m really good at Soccer, but can’t tie my shoes for the fucking life of me
I have DCD. 👍👍
Sameee
so do i,i learn skateboarding and sports to improve my skills
Same my brothers
Bro I have both DCD and dislexia so my handwriting is horrible I've been to many o.c therapists but it didn't work I really would need this company
As a kid, I would mess up my shoelaces, my shirt buttons, would wear clothes inside out and be unaware.. So many issues, which remained undiagnosed..
Iv just been diagnosed with it not long ago
I have dcd
I'm Special I do too and adhd
I'm Special same
Same
Me too,i wanna fix that
I'm Special Me too
I’ve got dcd and dyslexia and autism all at once. I hate myself.
Sin XE I think you are awesome to still be here. And you’d get through this 🙏🏾
I have despraxia autism and selective mutism
please don't hate yourself. Watch my positive videos on dyspraxia and others positive videos on dyslexia and autism. It may be particularly hard with three conditions but please stay strong you are an important and unique addition to this world
I'm sure you have many qualities. In our society we are influenced to focus on the ways que don't meet the average, but none of us is good at everything... Stay strong
@@sandracosta6619 easier said than done bro. just because I was born with this shit all my dreams are gone.
I would love to have someone properly study my daughter, she is six years old and due to covid has been left behind . She was diagnosed with DCD in april in my opinion she has severe problems with gait and coordination. Its good to see people looking at this!
I think my 6 year old daughter has this. She is driving me crazy with her clumsiness and lack of focus.
If she is eating just one meal, the kitchen looks like a pig was slaughtered there and she needs to be changed into a new outfit. And I say has to be changed because she will end up talking to the hairbrush in the bathroom instead of taking off her clothes. I feel like I'm still taking care of a toddler.
However she is incredibly kind and brave and imaginative and funny. I will try to be more patient after reading the comments from all of you who have dcd.
Does anybody else get ASMR from this??
I have dcd I find alot of stuff hard
Is it possible to have both DCD and ADHD at the same time?
Yes. My son has both in fact DCD is a common comorbidity of ADHD.
I came here for information not a voice muffled by loud music. Oxford Brookes I hope you've sacked those responsible for the sound in this video.
Who does a parent contact if they believe their child may have DCD, to get the proper assessment? She is 3 and is in the assistive classes in preschool but no diagnosis, just speech and motor delays. She can't produce words almost at all but can clearly understand what is said.
Going to her assigned GP doctor would certainly not be a wrongdoing. The doctor would most likely be able to further redirect you to people who can diagnose your child.
I know I´m late to answer, but I´ve read recently in my study material that DCD won´t really be diagnosed before age 6 since beforehand they don´t know if the ´problem´ will persist or go away by itself.
I did all this stuff at the age of 10 and I was told at 16 I have dylixea, DCD and dypraxea
lordbread I have Dispraxia ( I can’t spell )
Dominic Filice thank you, but I won’t ever spell it right lol it’s a bit ironic
I am also 16, and have dyslexia, dyspraxia and hypermobility and has slowed my development. My brain is at a 12 year old but I am at college ( in uk) and one of the top in my class. Don't give up, you will find something that you love and enjoy, keep trying new things xx
Lauren 1234 Tysm! I’m starting horse riding and hopefully I won’t fall off! Haha xx

I was only diagnosed at 15 and my primary school just said I was lazy even though I couldn't ride a bike till 11 and tie My shoe laces till I was 13 and couldn't tell time on a clock till I was 13
Hi, what's the difference between dyspraxia and DCD?
It is the same thing
I called it myself simply "coordination dyslexia" , before I learned they use the word dyspraxia, fot it. But to me, it's clearly SO close to dyslexia that I still think it's also a good term :-)
Pam Rojas nothing
Wig4 I think u have dyslexia
Sam, you must be an unsurpassed clairevoyant, to pose down a medical diagnose over a short youtube comment ...
I know very well what I "have" , I was just explaining that the terminology 'dyspraxia' was unknown to me, some 10 years ago, so I invented my own terminology "coordination dyslexia" ... nothing more, nothing less ... lol
The disorder types dyslexia, discalculia, dyspraxia... etc, are ALL extreme close to one another, and there are more often then not large crossovers between the sets of disorder symptoms. It's through the very long checklists in the symptoms, that a "main" label is glued on, with an individual, but an isolated "clear" this OR that, does not even exist....
You can find much in depth information about that topic, on specialised medical websites.
My daughter has dcd and she is dyslexic
It’s so frustrating cuz DCD makes me terrible at everything
right because I want to dance so bad without tripping or hurting myself and it seems I can only do it well if I am a little high off cannabis
Fuck dcd man. I just had a mental breakdown over this shit because I’ve come to the realization I have this and this is why I can barely control my own body.
