Having sciatica I should do it more often, but the pain makes me so tired I can’t get going. A warm shower releases some pain but is quite exhausting, but with less pain I can take a walk, but mostly about 30 minutes which is super exhausting for days. I need to start making shorter walks. Thanks for the advice.

At least hourly from the time I get up until I go to bed. I started walking more three years ago after my daughter told me 12,000 steps was the bare minimum so I bumped it up to 15,000 a day and lost forty pounds over the course of a year. I’ve had hip issues since Sept. 2020 and still walk 15,000 but do it inside because sometimes I just need to sit down immediately. I found walking short distances helped when I was having a sciatica episode. Going to the chiropractor helped but getting back in the car to drive home brought it back so I was lucky to find a chiropractor the next block over from my house and just walked over. I listen to podcasts because all that walking can get boring after a while.

Your advice to start walking 5 minutes a day makes so much sense especially when a person is not used to this as part of their daily routine, of course one can build up to 10 and 20 to 30 minutes onwards. Also when one is faced with just "walking" with no practical or obvious purpose, this can seem daunting for many, and gradually building this into our daily routine becomes natural & habitual.

I make at least 10K steps daily. Sometimes it’s 20-25K steps daily. I love walking ❤️ it clears my mind and makes me happy.

My cousin was told to walk and walked to the point of having rods put in her back! I have foot and gait issues ...got poles...which were great...but I went up 2 hills and killed my ankles...and tried a different technique and hurt my hips and shoulders. Back surgery 20 years ago relieved the foot drop but still have lost muscle in that leg due to nerve damage. So, you are so right...small increments and, for me, no hills or maybe one! After thing settle will go much more slowly as I really have not walked steadily for years...but the poles really do help with stability.

My DPT has me grounded for walking until inflammation subsides. I was aggravating my back by being too aggressive. Good advise Matt.

I know this approach of small, incremental changes works for me. I’ve built up my fitness plan (and continuing) using this method of implementing new habits. The hardest thing for me is having the patience to build up over time, because it does take time.

So true. I enjoy walking and for long periods of time. I use my lunch hour to walk the time . Non of my coworker want to join and resistant to walking. Btw, I have a lot of back pain for years( something different always) but walking helps. Walking is natural. Pain suck!😉

Matt I love your positive approach & have learned a lot from you.
I think your restriction on walking is good to begin to discover WHERE & WHAT 'back pain' stems & good strategy to re-learn how to walk & move efficiently. finding new stronger muscles. but IF you have SCIATICA, this is much more serious than just 'back pain'. b/c this condition is a 'spinal fluid' issue not a muscle pain. its NOT a need for SURGERY but a different strategy.
I was professional dancer over 40 yrs & managed to experience 'sciatica' a few times.
#1. there is no drug, supplement, exercise, surgery or Chiro- manipulation that can make the unrelenting pain from back leg & foot go away. it is 24/7 & CAN lead to paralysis.
#2. Sciatica nerve in low back, which reaches all the way to feet, is inflamed in the vertebrae in spine. this causes a ''kink' in the spinal fluid 'hose' [in Chinese acupuncture they acknowledge an organ in the body called ''triple warmer' this is the spinal column, its fluid & connection to brain] when the FLOW of spinal fluid is restricted results in NERVE starvation. [this is also the origin of 'frozen shoulder syndrome' but the inflammation is in cervical spine.]
STRATEGY I used to cure it:
locate the vertebrae in low back that is inflamed, usually in lumbar back btwn the hips. apply a small ice pack ONLY to the vertebra for 20 minutes, avoiding the larger muscles. NEVER NEVER use heat.
immediately after that, get on your feet,
    stand in this POSTURE
''ears over shoulders, shoulders over hips, hips over ANKLES [not toes]' & walk for 5 minutes.
as slow as needed to keep this posture.
REPEAT 5 TIMES A DAY and ice during SLEEP for pain reduction.
this process moves STAGNATED fluid thru the ENTIRE spine & re-activated the 'SACRAL PUMP' that pushes the fluid thru out the spine. when not icing, be AWARE of that POSTURE.
after 3 days you will begin to feel the pain slowly subside. keep this up for 3-5 weeks. DO NOT SIT IN A CHAIR, Instead, stand or lay flat with legs elevated.
DO NOT walk more than 5 minute at a time. ONLY when sciatic pain is ENTIRELY GONE can you begin to slowly strengthen muscles & increase time walking.

This is so interesting and I hope you can share more details how you fixed it in detail. I am also a former dancer and endurance athlete and for over a half year I experience the same problems like you mentioned. They came from overtraining, not listening to my body, working out through pain. After visiting one doctor after the other, being in physiotherapy etc. with the results to get no results, I started to educate myself, how I can fix my problem. I read about not putting heat to it and putting ice on the inflammation, but I have not started it yet. Did you sleep with the icepack? Can you recommend a website where I can read more about the things you mentioned (Chinese acupuncture for example..) Thank you for helping me and sharing this great comment.

@@stephaniehummel9771 my dear Stephanie. I wrote this for YOU & anyone who has sciatic b/c modern MDs do not know HOW to address the 'spinal fluid' issues. you CAN regain your strength again without surgery or panic.
YES sleep on small ice pack, after 20 min it will get hot !!! there is really no other instruction except what I detailed already. this IS exactly how I did it. expect to take 4-6 months to be able to go back to training. ICE 20 mins + WALK 5 mins 5 TIMES A DAY. get 2 or 3 small ice pack. one may not last 20 mins if vertebrae is swollen
PAIN AWARENESS is crucial. listen to your body
there is no website. but I love to help others just becuz it feels good.

Hey Matt, I would love to hear your thoughts and opinions on rebounding. Specifically, on rebounding on a Cellerciser with muscle imbalances (tight hip flexors/weak glutes/etc). Do you think it’s safe? TIA for any thoughts or opinions 😊.

A lot of talking and I still don't know what you recommend. I am a walker. I have pain in my back and legs (not debilitating but sometimes bad at night). I was grounded for a few weeks, but now am out walking between 4 and 5 klics at one go. My legs have been painful at night, but when I am walking, at least at the beginning, I feel a wonderful loosening up.
I think I should probably take a cafe break and then walk home. But.... what do you have to say about this??

Sounds like an EU vs US cultural difference. Most europeans cannot fathom going a full day without walking, but some US cities simply don't allow for that.

    • @someblokecalleddave1

I'm a European, I don't go out specifically to walk till the weather gets better before the cricket season and then I run and walk - interval training. Looking at my phone I average 6000 steps a day over the year. Don't know what that equates to in minutes, but walking to the train and back from the train station each day getting to work is 10 mins on it's own. (I'm 62). I do occasionally do start to suffer from a stiff back (usually sitting too much) - but I just do a bunch of glute bridges for a few days or 'Mountain climber Turkish bridges' and similar.

Walking and standing for 5 to 10 or more minutes is agony in the bottom of my back, and it gives a nerve pain down my quads. Part of my so called fibromyalgia. Oh and horrendous heel and ankle pain too
