Fly Fishing in New Jersey is CRAZY (Fall Stocking 2020 and Big Trout)

  • I hit the river with my buddy Jake in search of giant fall stocked rainbow trout. You've seen Jake in a couple other videos; the kid's dialed when it comes to saltwater fishing, not to mention fly fishing. Our goal was to find some big trout and we did just that. Fished 2 different spots, flows were low and the fish were honestly finicky. An unexpected big bite at the end of the day made it all worth it though. So cool to get my biggest rainbow on the fly. Shout out to Jake for inspiring me to fly fish since you guys know me; if theres an opportunity to fish the ultralight chances are I'll be fishing the ultralight lol.
Rod - Greys 4wt fly rod
    Reel - Lamson Liquid
10/10 for the combo I would highly recommend checking these out!
Fly- Black and Olive Wooly Bugger

Beautiful fish , a few of the locals and Shannon's fly shop would all chip in and have a stocking session in Dec 200 or 300 trout from muskanetcong Hatchery and few monsters, all sizes would stock the south branch from the bridge up to the private waters ,.

I like your NJ video man. Beautiful rainbow trout. Just got into fly fishing. Haven't caught a thing yet, well... maybe some leaves, but I'm guessing the fish are still in hibernation mode.

Honestly a lot of fun to fly fish the streams in jersey, we get a bad rep but you can find some great scenery and some bruisers here for sure. Looks like you guys had a great day

That's crazy that you caught that bow drifting the bugger just feet from Jake wading into the water to get his fly. I would have thought it would spook for sure!

In my experience the trout's spookiness can vary a massive amount with water depth, light levels, water clarity, and for some reason overhead cover (trout under branches/leaves seem less easily spooked). Considering it was fairly deep in that spot, under trees, with off-color water and a cloudy day, I'm not too shocked. You'd be surprised what fish will occasionally tolerate - I once hooked a rainbow that was under a log about 1 foot in front of me when I dapped a dry fly in front of the log and let it drift under. I've also spooked brook trout in 6-inch deep water from about 20 feet away while moving super slowly, for what it's worth. All depends.

@@yoursweatersux you're very right about all of that. It's all data to file away to use to form some kind of coherent picture of how fish behave 😂

I live in NC and only get up here to NJ a couple times a year to Hackensak. Can you give me a couple good places to go catch some nice trout like you have in this video? Thanks

Gotta love the woolly buggers.... My dad just passed away and i setup his donations for trout unlimited... There a lot of pretentious fly fisherman everywhere but we all know you can never overlook 3-5 basic flies for everyday fishing and a wooly will almost always do the trick... Nice video man
