Penny was the perfect owner for the perfect horse. She was not one of these modern era owners who plunk down millions and millions of dollars on horses so they can win classic races. She was the daughter of old school breeding and racing. Secretariat was a product of Penny’s wise decision to send Somethingroyal back to Bold Ruler for a second breeding. She was a true ambassador of the sport.
@@laurenurban3942 Yes, a classy lady in the true sense of the word - Penny Chenery carried herself so incredibly well. (Just like her wonderful Secretariat!)
Thanks so much for this post...great to see even a little behind the scenes look at the great Secretariat...what a physique...just watching him walk you can tell he is a badass horse...I can imagine what the other trainers/jockey's thought when they saw him strutting about in the paddock; Holy Christ we don't stand a chance.
Eddie Maples said that when you saw the blue and white checkered silks, there was nothing that anybody could do:) Eddie Maples was Secretariat's jockey for his last race in Canada.
So great to see Laurin in there with the sweat scraper, back when big league trainers were a bit more hands on with their charges. I know they worked him in blinkers when they wanted him to get serious. He worked a 1:34+ mile a week or so before the Belmont, and then had a :46 half mile sharpener 3 days out. Wonder which one that was. He did look pretty well in hand over that muddy track, whichever one it was. This was great -- thank you so much for posting.
Thanks for the behind the scenes video - has a bit of everyone in it - Sweat, Davis, Laurin, Penny Chenery, etc. I often wonder what he would have accomplished as a 4 & 5 year old when thoroughbreds hit their prime!
Holly hell, how have I never seen this footage? The whole time I was praying at some point they film him running by with sound!! An I'm not even religious!! And there it was at the end, the sound of secretariat. HOLLY @%$##$%!!!!!!!!
I miss the simpler times .... Lucien in a 3 piece suit helping cool Secretariat off after he comes in from his track session. Early 70s a great time for mankind!
Shams owner should have given sham a break after the Preakness but he wanted sham pushed to the maximum. The same way he wanted all of his horses pushed to the maximum to win. That’s why he had four of his horses break down on the track and die. He was a brutal owner who was obsessed with beating Secretariat and almost killing Sham in the process.
When Penny was asked the question is he (Secretariat) gonna win? Did he ever! We’ve never seen anything like it and still haven’t and we may never see anything like that ever again!!!
Of course. They knew that with the competition, such as it was, he could win that way and push their agenda to make him "finally the one" to try and dethrone Man O'Warm Turcotte even said he was going for the record, that's why the horse was riddenn out at the end, to break the record because they wouldn't give them the 1;53 2/5 for the Preakness. And my source, a letter from Turcotte I had.
@@lorrainelloyd7750 every horse owner hopes their horse can set a record and by then they knew Secretariat had a real chance at doing that in every race he was in but no one could have dreamed he would destroy the record the way he did! Belmont has been considered by many horse people around the world the most perfect race ever run! Hard to not go along with that!
Love the footage and memories of entire team of Big Red.
WOW, I thought I'd seen everything on YT about Sec! AMAZING!!!!!!!!
What a horse!
Don’t you just love Penny ?
She is so humble and she owned the greatest horse that ever lived !

Wow. Secretariat sure did have muscles on top of muscles.
YES he's going to win that race!!! He's the immortal Secretariat!!! The best thats ever been!!!!
Little did they know..

And Turcott!
Secretariat would have been a beast at four.
Seems only geldings race beyond 3. Some at 10yrs of age. Secretariat at 10, I think so.
Wow! Four people don’t like this video. They must be green with envy. Thank you for posting this old film.....it’s a gem...thank you.

I have never seen this. Thank you so much!

Yes, the 1970s was a glorious time. I’d give anything to go back and stay there.
Three beautiful white socks
"And the Lord sayeth, let there be HORSE!"
I love how modest people were back then.
Except for the owner of Sham!
@@np100 I think that was only the movie character. I recall Penny speaking well of Shams owner.

Train? He could of woke up, won the race and went back to his stall
Fast gallop. I'm leaning towards training like that. Old school
That wasn't a fast gallop.
Not even stretched out and beats his training mate by 20 lengths in the stretch.
He was out for a gallop, not a work out, and he was training alone.
Greatest athlete. now Brady wins 6 . still big red
Spoiler - he wins the race
Ought to have asked Secretariat that ? He would of said nobody.
If they only knew what was going to happen on that day
Top.
