Lest you think I am a Secretariat hater: Secretariat is my favorite racehorse, and I rank him GOAT for dirt horses. *But that is simply not true, that the whip was never used on the horse.* You *really* think in his 4 losses (I am not counting the DQ for the moment) the rider never touched him? Turcotte surely must have used the crop in the Whitney and the Woodward, in both of which Secretariat finished 2nd. And in the Wood Memorial, in which he finished 3rd. Quote from "Secretariat," William Nack's detailed bio of the horse: "Getting no response from Secretariat when he chirped [midway through the Wood Memorial] Turcotte tapped him on the shoulder with the stick....And Turcotte, growing desperate as the horses made the turn, knowing that time was running out, cocked his whip, reached back and strapped the colt. He was empty as a jug." (p. 282). And Turcotte used the whip in the Derby. "He [Turcotte] did not want to be lapped on Sham in the stretch. So he swung the red horse wider at the corner, and for a moment the colt seemed to lose momentum. Turcotte raised his stick and lashed him once right-handed. Secretariat moved to Sham at the top of the lane...He cut the margin to a half length and then a neck as they drove to the the three-sixteenths pole. Turcotte and Pincay rode furiously, alternately pumping and going to the whip." pp. 441-332, "Secretariat." (Once clear of Sham, Turcotte did not use the whip except to flash it at the colt's eye as a reminder not to lug in.) The video of the Derby shows Turcotte using the whip entering or early in the stretch. On p. 155, Nack says of the stretch run in the Champagne Stakes at 2, which Secretariat lost by a controversial DQ: With Secretariat and 3 other horses four abreast "Suddenly, Turcotte raised his right hand and lashed Secretariat once." In Nack's account of Secretariat's maiden race: [at the sixteenth pole] "He [Secretariat] was in the hunt, and Feliciano was asking him for more steam, reaching back and strapping him once right-handed." (p. 101, "Secretariat") And in his third race, an allowance race at Saratoga which the colt won: "With Secretariat moving to them [the two horses ahead of him] Joe Iz caved in first, dropping back, and passing the three-sixteenths pole Ron reached back and hit the red colt once, right-handed." (p. 134) I'm not going to go hunt through more of the book. In the Preakness and the Belmont, there was no need, for the crop, and I would think not in the Marlboro Cup or his two turf wins, where he easily handled top horses. But it is likely the whip was used in many of Secretariat's 2-year-old races, where he was still learning, and always coming from behind. (Which he did less and less, at the end of his career.)
He was a mellow dude , UNTILL, he realized “OH” ! Well I’m Not having Tails and Mud in my Face Longer. Haha. He needed lots of track to get them long legs and big body moving. Wonder horse, Big Red💞💕💖❤️🔥
Jockeys usually weigh 108 -118 pounds but exercise riders can weigh up to 150 pounds- interesting fact A horse can carry 20-25 of its weight for a rider, including tack .

And in his third race, an allowance race at Saratoga which the colt won: "With Secretariat moving to them [the two horses ahead of him] Joe Iz caved in first, dropping back, and passing the three-sixteenths pole Ron reached back and hit the red colt once, right-handed." (p. 134)
I'm not going to go hunt through more of the book.
What's her name??
The. ICON. Of. Racing. 🤣🤣🤣
Yet died a poor man!
The word systemic comes to mind. 🤔
He was a mellow dude , UNTILL, he realized “OH” ! Well I’m Not having Tails and Mud in my Face Longer. Haha. He needed lots of track to get them long legs and big body moving. Wonder horse, Big Red💞💕💖❤️🔥
Man oh man...
Jockeys usually weigh 108 -118 pounds but exercise riders can weigh up to 150 pounds- interesting fact A horse can carry 20-25 of its weight for a rider, including tack .
Tia ?
Can you get a longer microphone? This one is too short. No one thinks jockeys ride horses everyday to train them, everyone knows exercise riders do that and Secretariat absolutely would've won the TC without this guy. Yeah he played a part but he would've won regardless.
1,200 lbs
Why are they making her hold that big ass microphone? Lol.
lol the other mic stopped working so we had to go with the back up! It is huge :)
Just a silly person
What a shame, Reporter wanted to do all the talking, Geezzz let Eddie tell HIS story, not her telling his story. Wow!!!
What a painful interview to watch.
Why? He's an icon. I'm thrilled I hot to see him!!!
Why? I loved seeing him. He is an icon. Awesome.
