Fully agree with you Martin that repair is better than replace! Thankfully UA-cam gives skilled people like yourself a wonderful platform to share valuable skills, often at risk of being lost, so others can learn. Love all 3 channels. Thank you for your efforts particularly in such difficult times ⭐️⭐️⭐️⭐️⭐️
Thanks Tom
I love these videos, in a world gone mad it's like a slice of comfort food for the brain.
You said some wise words there martin 👍,no reason to be a "couch potato" ! 😊
Exactly Ash.
Martin thanks for this, really helped me put my Izzy back together!
Love the wise words, so right about the common sense. Could listen to you all day.
Wow, thank you
Thank you very much for this excellent, interesting, inspiring and encouraging video! I think there will be one more carb to be cleaned within the next couple of days. Best regards from Finland! 🇫🇮🏆
Thanks very Martin for the shout out. The subscriptions have gone up.
Thanks again Jeff
No problem Jeff
Thanks for your time Martin, and knowledge it's been a great help. John 👍
Thanks John.
Thanks for the video mate loved it me and the boy sat down and enjoyed it thanks again
No problem 👍
You're absolutely right, Martin. I came across your channel by chance about 4 or 5 years ago when I was working on the variator and clutch of my son's 50cc Gilera moped. I ended up searching YT for some advice and I found you working on Jimmy's moped - and your vid was by far the most helpful and informative. I also liked the fact you were using just basic tools and a bit of ingenuity with what you had available. I subscribed to your channel there and then and I've been hooked ever since. Thank you for not being a telly addicted couch potato and for sharing your experiences with us (viewers) Cheers, Mark ;)
Thanks Mark, wow, that was 5 years ago and you're still watching.
Hi ya Martin glad you got your pull cord , nice one all the best. BIG TIM
AHH, thanks again Tim. That will last me a long time.
Your most welcome , you give all of us so much with your vids a little bit here and there dont hurt buddy. TIM
Thanks for the videos, it's great taking a break between odd jobs and catching up.
You made me smile Martin when you said no need to sit and watch tv when I'm doing just that watching this video!! I'll still be watching. Stay safe.
Haha, not my subscribers barbara lol. I mean watching the trash TV on mainstream.
@@retrorestore Haven't watched mainstream tv for many years. Doesn't interest me.
Martin, great videos. Remember you can cut out those gaskets with your vinyl cutter. That would be easier than cutting by hand and they would all be correct. Keep 'em comming!!
Great video Martin, and thanks for uploading so we without a telly have something to watch under the lockdown. 👍👍👍
Glad you enjoyed it
Great video again Martin I've always said to my son as my has my farther has said to me there is no such word as can't do it have a go in our day we always had to keep up the good work Martin 👍👍👍👍
Thanks Alan, yes you are right.
Excellent Martin keep them coming entertaining thru this strange time just put new clutch in my trotter van used your video for reference great help 👍👍
Nice one Lawrence. I've go to get back on mine soon.
Thanks for the words of encouragement, they are greatly appreciate it these days,

Thanks for the videos. I’m subbed on all three and love the vids. Especially the tinkering/vlogging vids. Hope you and family are well.
Thanks Harry. Yes, we are fine bud, you too I hope.
Enjoyed this video..learned a few tips from it..thanks.
Great video Martin. Yes there is money to be made but you have got to go out and earn it. As deboss garage says at the end of his video's "if your not filthy your not rich". lol

Amazing work thanks for the content stay safe
Thanks for the great videos. I have always been fixing thing in the electronics side down to component level but there isn't much work now with the cheep Chinese stuff. Because of your channel I have done the Mondeo DMF, got sand blasting, powder coating, Built a new workshop so very busy now with all the spare time. Thanks for the inspiration to do something different.
Glad to help, nice one Phil.
Martin, great video buddy, hope your all well. I got in touch with a mate and a local care home was scrapping the old pump hydraulic lift beds, I put a sheet of 8×4 3 quarter inch ply on it and it's been super. Saves yer back!! 👍 Don't tell everyone though!! Hahaha will try and get you a picture. Of it.
Yes, I did think of that but I need something narrower like a motorcycle lift table so I can still walk around it.
Wise words. I have a restoration channel and I often spend a weeks worth of spare time restoring rusty old tools that probably weren't worth saving to most people, but I like bringing stuff back from the dead, I enjoy tinkering, seeing how things work, I always have since I stripped my BMX down and fixed it when I was around 7 years old! I think people are too quick to throw things away nowadays, whether it's electronics or tools or white goods, 99 times out of a hundred they can all be fixed for peanuts. Keep it up, I enjoy watching all your channels and am subbed with all mine :D
Thanks bud, Yes I agree. Too much is just thrown away nowadays.
Thank you for being so generous with your knowledge and expertise. The step by step carburettor reassembly details are excellent. Izy is now back in woking trim. I see no reason to give the nice people at Honda my £400 for a new mower any sooner than I absolutely have to. Maintain, Repair, Refurbish and Restore.
Thank you!
Martin the table you need is a old Hospital bed manual hydraulic foot pump ram. Put a 3/4 ply top. You can usually get them for pennies. Low of 2" high of almost 4". Perfect for your back. I had two in my last garage. I used to put engines and gearboxes on it and lift into some cars as it made the job easy.
Yes I did think of that but it needs to be a bit narrower like a motorcycle lift table so I can still walk round it.
Yes Martin “Common sense is being bred out of us" and Jonathan's comment “Common sense isn't common anymore” is oh so true. We seem to be in an era where computer say and people do, and if the computer doesn't tell us what to do we are stumped. We are losing the ability to think for ourselves.
Nice one martin any honda engine is worth trying to get going again . Used them for 30 years in my gardening business. Keep up the good work bud.
Thanks 👍
Good video Martin, appreciate all the videos you're putting out...👍.

Nice video good instructional. I rebuild old British bikes as a hobby love spending time in the shed. At present I'm restoring an old 1965 Royal Enfield Bullet when I can get the Time. Your right we dont do it for the money as most bikes I've restored would not even pay half the time & money spent I do it for the pleasure and end results. Problem is I still have to work as I work in engineering on the railway so time is limited.
Still great to have a hobby tinkering on something you enjoy though Alun.
Thank you Martin I always love watching videos I am from South Africa
I've been furloughed for 12 weeks but I've got so many projects on the go i don't think it's going to be long enough 😂
I come from a time where everything gets replaced rather than being repaired.... luckily for me my father wasn't so he's taught me how to do certain repairs around the house in the garden he's taught me how to build things etc and I'm very happy he's taught me these skills because you save so much money doing it yourself. I love watching all your videos. I'm actually autistic and when I was younger my mum and dad would hate getting me toys because the first thing I'd do is get the screwdriver out to see how they worked. 🤣 I'd take every screw out and put it back together again I loved it and still do now so these videos interest me so much. Martin you're going to get sick of me commenting on these videos soon because all my comments are always full blown story's. 🤣🤣
I used the horns from the 'Pifco' bike horn in a buzzer box for my Heron Bite alarms for Carp fishing. Nice bit of nostalgic memory jogging there!

I had one of them horns on my blinged up Raleigh Chopper back in the 70's, had grip tassels, a modified moped screen, front dynamo hub, derailer gear set which I got me dad to put on the Sturmley Archer one as the derailer kept spitting the chain. I wanted a set of Jubilee alloy wheels and my uncle wired the rear reflector up with a round tail lamp wired into the dynamo, it was such a cool bike til some toerag nicked it in the early eighties and the racing bike I got that Xmas even with cow horns on and knobbly tyres was never the same as me ol' chopper. Purple and pink it was too, the bike I mean before the dirty minded get the wrong idea... O.o
Totally agree, if you enjoy doing it that's the secret of life.
Great video and very helful for us that want to do some diy on this motor. I have the same rattle as this one coming from the starter, any idea what is causing this noise?
Thanks
If you check the blade balance that could be the source of vibration, and you may find the crank is ok. You can balance the blade with an old bearing.
Hi Martin true woods said my Grandfather always said only boring people are bored it's always in the mind fantastic video Mate kind regards David
Too true Dave.
I spent a lazy day installing a new video card and taking the opportunity to thoroughly de-dust and clean my PC with me compressor and my blower tool I had the built up detritus from everywhere then got out the Mr Sheen and polished up all the casework then whipped the vid card in to buttoning it all up and lumbering down the hall with it (its a HAF XM by Coolermaster, a mid sized gaming server case and very large). Half an hour later and after moving around a couple USB devices so the keyboards (one big one, one gaming quarterpad) and mouse were running off the USB 3.0's and treated myself to a view of games where the settings are turned to max and super super pleased. Couple of my collections quartz watches had dead batteries so whipped them out and all working nice again, pottered about and been a productive day all round.
You can't beat a bit of pottering around Ian lol

Totally with you Martin, in being able to save something which has been thrown out, but has lots of life left in it, I'm currently bringing my old mower with a aspera lav 135 engine on it, suspect its from the early/ mid 70's, still got lots of life left in it, mower deck has been replaced more than once, but with regular oil changes the engine keeps on running .
Nice one Alan

Can I ask if oil is really thick can these engines have a little oil flush at all ?? Also were can I get one of your Restore stickers ect ,and do you sell mountfield stickers.?,

Hi Sean, mowers normally have SAE30 oil which is quite heavy oil. There are no oilways but you could do a flush if you wanted. Send me your address on my channel "about" page, you can email from there bud.

Hi Martin.
Total non mechanic here. Busy fixing up a honda izy that was being thrown away. Taken the carb off and cleaned it up. Need a new gasket just like the one you cut out. Forgive my ignorance but what material is that you cut. Some type of cardboard? Great inspiration from you, thanks for the video.

Thanks. Will get some. Much appreciated.
Hey Martin. Fantastic. I installed the various garkets. Put it all together. Pulled twice and off she went. Running like a filly. 😄
I discovered that whoever had serviced her before had put two of the gaskets upside down. The little holes didn't match the channel. And the choke 'arm' or wire or whatever was hooked up in the wrong hole. Anyway she runs well now and has only minimal rust as I am in a dry area. Thanks for the tip. Bless ya.

Love the video’s mate I have a problem with my Mountfield as it’s starting to rev very high for no reason can you help lee 👏👏👏👏👏👍👍👍👍
Could be an air leak, sticking governor or sticking throttle linkage.
@@retrorestore thank you very much will have a look thank you very much 👍 👍 👍
The auto choke sticking is a common issue with this GCV series engine, you would need to change the thermowax. The new GCVx engines they are fitting to the new Honda mowers and other mowers haven't got this issue as it's a completely new engine.
Thanks for the info Ben
I love to tinker as well!
Hello Martin. I have just watched your video on the Honda Izy. I wondered if you wouldn't mind hopefully helping me with my 2012 Honda Izy it looks exactly the same as yours, I have done a complete service on it as it was over revving from start, it is still running the same, what do you think I could do to lower the revs please. I have watched many of your vids and you have helped me out many times with various mowers, as you say it is a hobby and I also enjoy working on them, and I service friends mowers. Look forward to hearing from you. Shaun
Over revving could be govenor arm incorrectly set,
Throttle linkage getting stuck open or an air leak on the intake. The first thing I would check is if the throttle flap in the carb is in the fully open position causing it to rev high. Disconnect the throttle arm from the carb and see if the flap closes.
Hi mate, I am trying to replace the compensation spring on an old Hayter 41 (306r) but finding it impossible to pull the spring and hook it back over the nut. Have you got any videos where you show how it is done, I cant find any easily or could you do a special one as a tips and hints? Would be very grateful, not sure if I need a special tool to do it or what and cant afford to take it in to a dealer. Many thanks. Andy
You can loop some cord around the spring and pull it
I bought a set of Dewalt drill bits Martin. They where not cheap but tbf there really good. Martin can i see some more work on the acclaim. Must admit I do like watching you work on the motors. Although the mower work is fun but not as much as the car's lol. Nice one good work on the carb.👍 I do it all the time somtimes I get helpful feed back. Land rover Freelander Ird lol that long ago lol. Runs a bit Smoky but should be good buddy. Think your right choke might have sticking. Sounds better this Time. Hopefully you will get some good spares of it.👍
I'll be back on the Acclaim this week Ali. Keep tuned.
@@retrorestore I will mate 👍
If you take apart the carb assembly, always replace the autochoke plunger during re-install.
Not a thing I keep in stock though.
@@retrorestore That's why you have eBay, or subscribers to send you parts. :)
Definitely worth changing what Honda call the thermo wax as these fail and cause the Honda GCV auto choke system to not easy start. Honda have now made a brand new replacement to the old GCV engine series which is known as the GCVx series and they have addressed the thermowax autochoke issue.
Neat vide Martín.
Thanks Dave
I'm working on my car that's keeping me busy. Infact loads of things are keeping me busy.
Hi Martin thanks for the video, can you use a kitchen spoung for an air filter
I have don'e in the past but they are only cheap to buy.
It's not that, I live in Corfu and can not get spears.
Martin just a quick question about my mower, Mountfield HP470 with briggs classic engine ( with a new plastic carb just fitted ). It starts and revs up very high for 4-5 seconds then cuts and won't start for ages. What could be wrong ? Iv Checked around for air leaks, the o-ring onto the intake tube etc, all looks good. It has no throttle control lever, just engine stop/brake.
Make sure the governor vane linkage to the carb is not stuck. Its a common problem when refitting a carb.
@@retrorestore checked it buddy, all moving freely
I’ve just obtained my 3rd Honda izy and currently restoring it. I have 2 first gens and 1 3rd gen which I swapped the deck on and is a beast of a mower (spits fire sometimes)
First Honda izy I had was a 16 inch pre autochoke and it ran and it’s now in the potting shed coming to the end of its life. My other one is waiting for the summer to come out and the 18 inch one is in the shed ready for restoration. Any advice on the cleaning of the carb and fuel? If the engine has had water in the carb will it struggle to turn over ?
I have an ultrasonic cleaner but carb spray and an air compressor should do.

Honda always is worth to be saved.
Not with this much work and a bent crank Jan.
hi you can fix a bent crank if you basiclly make a gaint thumb screw that fits underneith the mower it works and thats another mower fixed and a acurate crank just use a pointer for checking the wobble of the crank be a perfectionest it pays off worth making have a engineer make it it mite be expenive but at least you can always have it there to go.
Yes I know all about those tools Harry, Thanks anyway.
I'm watching you on the tele , my lawnmower's electric. (just kidding it is electric but I already de-rusted, repainted it and sharpened and rebalanced the blade) I also do my car and bike regular maintenance. It might not be worth it economically at first but have you seen the way some of the mecanics work in shops ? My oil filter was overtorqued so much by the dealers mechanic I needed my socket AND a strap to take it off , Drain plug was a pain in the butt to remove (I was concerned for my oil pan) and the crush seal looked like a flower.
Its a common thing i'm afraid.
When you where 14 years old did you ever make an mistakes as in quite big ones
I’m 13 years old and into all this but I keep making mistakes like I keep rounding of bolts or just breaking then? Any advice
Get your parents to get you a decent little socket set bud. Halfords do good ones to suit many budgets.
Great Vid Martin
Hello there, I picked up a lawnmower of some lady yesterday, she said it just stopped working, so I tried starting it and it fired up and cut out, so I thought maybe as simple as a carb clean, which didn’t really help, sometimes it runs fine then it don’t run at all, seems a bit intermittent, any idea what it could be? It’s only 5 years old
See if you have good fuel flow from the tank. Sometimes the vent in the cap gets blocked and this fault you are having can happen
retrorestore fuel flow is all good, cap is nice and clean, I had it running for about 5 mins and it sounded fine, then fired it up again and it started hunting, then sometimes doesn’t start at all, could it the values need adjusting? It’s only 5 years old
