One has to wonder how the fate of the United States would have faired if we could only keep good on our word from time to time... and Special Order 15 would have been a good time for keeping our word. I have to imagine what would this country be like today and at this very moment had the United States delivered on the 40 acres and a mule promise. When you consider the hardships imposed by slavery it really was not so much to give out 40 acres and a mule to people. By the way, was this meant for each individual or for each family? How old did a person need to be in order to qualify for there very own 40 acres. Would a family of 10 receivre 400 acres? Just wondering. I wonder what would have become had the U.S. lived up to that... Perhaps there would be less gang activity in cities across the united states. Perhaps the entire look and feel of the U.S. would be different... I have to agree that we are still feeling the sting of slavery - and not only by blacks. Obviously blacks were stung the most by slavery and still are harmed by it, but I think everyone still is effected by the unfairness of slavery and the failure to right the wrong(s). It is interesting how Stanton and Sherman saw this as a kind of no brainer -- a thing that was somehow obvious... a thing that had to be done in some form or another. And so I have to wonder what could have been, what would have been.. Perhaps that part of the country would have developed into a spectacular place with grand cities and universities that may have turned out to be just as prestigious or some even more so, than those of the whites. I just have to wonder would there still be the lingering racism that we still have in the U.S. had we treated people with dignity and respect. Had the 40 acres and a mule plan gone through then we would have in this country men of color who are at the level of a Bill Gates or others at the top of the economy. I have to wonder would the cities that grew out of those areas would they be segregated today, or would they be integrated? Would they be beautiful and amazing places like what the South Koreans have achieved? I wonder what the minimum wage would be in the Special field Order 15 area would be? Would it be a paltry $10 an hour, or would it be more like $25 an hour (a wage worth working for ). I have a feeling that what would have been, what could have been, what should have been would of ended up to this day as a symbol of mans ability to overcome hardship and rebuild even better. It is a true shame that they never were given the chance.
And no, I did not come here as part of a history assignment - i came this website as a U.S. Citizen who cares about his fellow humans. And I was trying to find information on sharecropping.

@Chris Indermuehle you don't know what could have been. Your reactive countermeasure to the original comment is so unproductive. Catch the jewels behind the commentary.
He stated all facts, but it still ain't enough.

@Chris Indermuehle so we can agree that the white American wealth gap was accumulated and made relevant off the backs of free slave labor. Particularly in the south.

Brother Frazier's response that Blacks needed land in order to become SELF- SUFFICIENT still holds true today. It is the lack of us receiving a fair and equal opportunity to provide for ourselves that accounts for many of the Black related hardships we endure today. THIS WRONG MUST BE MADE RIGHT!!

TRACKERJD A contract is a contract rather written or verbal. They owe and how they took back the land is criminal.

Seems to me, since Lincoln approved it, never rescinded it, it was really an Executive Order, same as the Emancipation Proclamation, also a military directive. EO's are temporary, Congress did not get it codified before Lincoln's death. I believe both Lincoln & Stanton meant it to be permanant.

@@sweetiepie1862 I have not returned to this video for quite awhile. To give evidence that it was meant to be permanent, this plan was done before and remains in place to this day. www.blackpast.org/african-american-history/forty-acres-and-mule/

@Mike Polakowski First I want to state, Sherman was a great general, no discussion there. Sherman was also an avowed deeply racist person. He also lied in that letter. He may have told Stanton that he would use Black soldiers. He NEVER did. He had no sympathy for the ex slaves.
      www.historynet.com/a-white-mans-war.htm
This letter seems to absolve himself of any issue relating to the 40 acres and a mule. Andrew Johnson did not want Black people to have this land. With Lincoln dead, Johnson chose to ask Sherman about the order, knowing very well what Sherman would say. Johnson could easily ask his Sec. of War, Stanton about Special Order 15, (the true author) but he knew what Stanton would say. So he went with Sherman. This must have been a controversy at the time or Sherman would not have had it published in the newspapers. Stanton at the time was mixed up with the impending impeachment of Andrew Johnson, and his firing triggered that impeachment. So it comes down, at least to me, of intent. Did Lincoln and Stanton intend this land grant to be permanent? Because of the 1863 land redistribution in S.C., and it's success, this tells me that both Lincoln and Stanton intended this to be a permanent part of reconstruction. As for Sherman stating he did not know the War would end soon, apparently he was the only one who didn't think it was ending soon. So does one believe Abraham Lincoln and Stanton, or does one believe Andrew Johnson and Sherman. I believe Lincoln on this.

It was more than a contract. This was voted upon and not brought to pass. It took for this to be ratified and approved by legislation and it wasn't. As I wrote below, a lot of people aren't following the actual written verbiage. They are watching a 5 minute video and not actually going to the Special Order to read it. Google is our friend. It also stated in the special order that we were to have the union Army protect us until we could do so ourselves. It, again ALSO, stated that we would be able to govern ourselves. The point of killing Special Order 15 was to kill the thought that slaves would ever own that much power. So they did.

Why dont you have the Liberia also was a choice as well . The United States bought land and gave it over to the enslaved freedmen to before this, and they were also offered to go there too, and they didn’t want to go. They wanted to stay in United States.
