As they get older, alcoholics tend to become more insular. Not only is it cheaper to drink at home, it avoids the negative judgement of the social circle, especially so in expat circles. The old expat, especially the lonely old expat, has often had his fill of the tall stories and the same old, same old whinging of the dreamers turning sour in the bar. There comes a time in every serious drinker's life when new battlegrounds need to be drawn, away from the fray. Where once again they can pick over the bones of their failings and dream that all is not lost. Old glories rekindled with the setting sun. One swig at a time: alone, unheard and away from prying eyes.
My definition of a alcoholic is not about how much alcohol you drink, it's how it affects you, when you have been drinking, if you are troublesome with a Jekyll and Hyde character, an alcoholic is not just a person who is sleeping on a park bench, there are many Dr's, Priests, ministers, Business men of all professions, ask yourself how many times you have mentioned how many different bars in different parts of the world you have been in,, maybe you should get honest with yourself, and have a look in the mirror and see what's looking back at you?
It's true what You say about drinkers. I used to drink hard when I was younger. Got in trouble twice, back in my early days. Plus I liked drinking alone. I now choose not to drink. And I didn't need a program to help me stop drinking. I needed to do that for myself, no one else. I just do not like it when a liquor drinker tries to force a drink on me. I like it better when my head is clear. I "might" buy myself ONE GLASS OF WINE. And this statement is so very true. One is too many and two is not enough.
I cant drink anymore for 30 years drank 1 pint of rum for supper every night then had a coma type sleep gained 200 pounds from doing this, got AFIB and had to stop went on one meal a day diet and lost the 200 pounds.
I just read tha Ed Sweeny is being flown back to England. He is in ICU right now and the good news is his medical coverage is taking care of evertthing and will be putting him in a helicopter to the airport or taken via ambulance. good on ED.
Yes Simon vast difference between alcoholics and social heavy drinking.Myself fall in second category abstaining during the week and going for a good drink at weekends far exceeding recommended units and don't see anything wrong with this. Like you see far more Filipino alcoholics but this is because only 5 expats in our province😂😂 Cheers 🥂 Jim
Simon Many thanks, some great points n observations.Good subject matter. Imho there are often way too many generalised statements made on this subject and I consider there is a lot of mixing up X pats and tourists. Definitely you have it spot on with the UK old style pub culture. Where it was more social drinking. I've spent over 20 yrs in the USA ( all 50 states etc etc) and my experience is that they have a much greater % of peeps with alcohol dependency issues... But they are very quick to criticise others wrt to excessive drinking... Also I lived n worked in Germany for about 16 yrs, much of that time in Bavaria, where beer is classed as foodstuff, subsequently beer 5% + is available in vending machines in factories. I worked as an engineer in a steam turbine manufacturing plant where high tolerance components weighing several tons were fitted by guys with a case of beer on their work bench. This continually freaked out clients who visited the plant to conduct partial acceptance tests etc on their multi million $ turbines...Also thought out Germany it was the norm in my experience for schnapps n sekt ( german 🍾 champagne) to be drunk in offices during working hours. In the uk for example this would be grounds for dismissal... Again many thanks for a valid assessment. . Cheers 🍻 Glenn Gotta rush, REALLY NEED A DRINK OR 4....
I'm planning a 6wk trip to Ph right now. Coming in Jul/Aug. Planning to spend a week or so in Dumaguete. I'm not a heavy drinker, very far from it. Should I be staying in Valencia and plan some day trips to Dumaguete (just to see it) from there or stay in Dumaguete and visit Valencia? Only thing important to me is being able to get online, my work depends on it
If it was me, I would stay in Dumaguete and visit Valencia. Others may disagree but for me Valencia is a pleasant place to live but not really a holiday destination.
It's a fair observation when you consider alcohol is much cheaper here than Thailand. But the Philippines does attract more family orientated expats in that sense. The Philippines does suit those who like to imbibe without the inherent aggravation associated with bars you often get in Thailand. It could be something to do with the way local police deal with drunkenness. In Thailand it is largely accepted as Farang culture, whereas the Filipino authorities might take a far dimmer view. But not wishing to sound like a party pooper, the Philippines with its very strict drug enforcement programme is a noticeably safer & perhaps kinder place to retire.
The Philippines is more family orientated for sure. But the inherent problem with that is many who come here for the "happy family" lifestyle often look down their noses at others who live in the Philippines for other reasons. Surely, if you like to drink beer then it's better to do so in a tropical climate looking out from a bamboo beach bar with the sun going down over a blue sea versus a cold bleak public house with the old fellas cradling their half pint of beer? Or the other poor chaps who perhaps never had much luck with the ladies in the west taking full advantage of the possibilities here! We should be all of us no matter our lifestyle choice be grateful of the freedoms afforded to everyone alike. The Philippine governments only concern is that retirees and visitors adhere to the rules and regs whilst spending their foreign currency. Western governments used to provide much needed aid to these poorer nations where some of the funds were miss appropriated Now that role is largely being superceded by retirees from overseas where their monetary contributions is far more homogeneous reaching all corners of society. We need only to think how very lucky we really are and enjoy this moment in time >>>
You are of course correct with your observation. However, my point is, if they are secret drinkers at home in private, how are they giving other expats a bad name?

Hello mate, yeah I think it is. It depends entirely on the kind of lifestyle you want and where you want to live but you can live pretty good on that kind of budget in the vast majority of places here.
The definition of Alcoholism ... american medical Association .. This was completely different than yours. Justices said that the AMA “defined alcoholics as 'those excessive drinkers whose dependence on alcohol has attained such a degree that it shows a noticeable disturbance or interference with their bodily or mental health, their interpersonal relations, and their satisfactory social and economic functioning. '”
The definition of alcoholism..... British Medical Association ....A chronic disease in which a person craves drinks that contain alcohol and is unable to control his or her drinking. A person with this disease also needs to drink greater amounts to get the same effect and has withdrawal symptoms after stopping alcohol use.
I see, there's no difference. But what great britain says in the united states .. Definitions... For what you say in this video is a big difference... From your definition to both these

Ultimately, the question is, "Do I need booze?" Well, the lockdown during the pandemic demonstrated that I didn't. I did need coffee, though.! If you are an alcoholic, unless you are loaded, I don't see how you could survive in the Philippines and live a decent life if you had drink problem.
