    These trees a very sacred and this is truly sad that they are not being well taking care of

  • @toddstropicals

    One main reason the trees aren't recovering is partly over harvesting, but old ways of cutting the trees. They cut way to deep into the tree's heart wood making it difficult for the trees to heal, a tree severely damaged will not produce viable seeds due to this damage. There's a few of us working hard propogating these trees through growing them for seed production, and growing from cuttings. I now have currently 8 species of boswellia and around 20 trees of various ages. We try to practice conservation through horticulture, but its a long process to grow the trees from seed b. sacra/carteri only have an 8-10% germination rate.

      I am sure everyone who cares for the environment appreciates your effort in pre serving these sa cred trees. I believe there should be an establishment that educates the people in these countries to maintain a sustenable way in propagating the trees and harvesting the resin.

  • @toddstropicals
    @toddstropicals 7 років тому +26

    So why aren't these people propagating the trees on a large scale instead of over harvesting the older mature trees. I've been growing 7 species of boswellia for a few years now and honestly they're not hard to propagate or grow at all, and if I can do this in Florida it seems to me it should be even easier to do where they're an indigenous species.
    And maybe even make more money by selling a few trees to collectors such as myself.

      Kyle A How long is a variable question usually 10 years or more for resin production, and most exude resin without cutting naturally. One would not want to cut a tree less than 3 inch diameter branches. And only 2 times yearly.

    What an absolutely painful thing to watch. I'm torn between the two emotions of total sadness for those beautiful ,loving,giving trees.......or my INTENSE FURY to make those responsible pay for that travesty.......... I do think about the poorest peole on earth trying to survive survive day vs just plain evil greedy harvesters.... and it is a absurdly difficult thing to try to come to a rational conclusion for. I pray these farmers and this wonderful woman come upnwith a working solution. 🙏💚🙏

I like the background music and there are many sites that you guys visited which really indicate that these trees are over harvested and something has to be done ASAP to resolve the situation. I admire the work that you have done thus far and flagging these problems is so valuable to the environment and to the people of Somaliland. Well Job done Honey and kudo to Stephen and the rest of your team for putting this video!!

    Many points that was told is not accurate. The locals were led to the answers as per translation. It was reported that 60K of resins has been produced annually in Madarmuge and 5 year later the produce is 15K. This is absurd. The guy that has claimed that they pay local artisans to give rest the trees for 4 month is not true. the traders only gets as much resins as they can to lowest price. They don't care the trees. counter check his claim with tree owners.
    The trees has been over harvested and there's no propagation of the trees yet the extent of the over harvesting and misuse is not as reported. Very fabricated.
