The guitar arpeggio in this tune is one of very few things that makes me cry almost everytime. You can feel every human emotion in it: sadness and happiness at the same time in an inexplicable way. Stunning and unwordly at its highest ethereal level possible.
Wow. I saw the PMG perform this song at least 8 times, and it was the highlight of the concert, IMO. This full orchestral arrangement is a stunning fresh take on it. The whole thing is captivating, but at 6:54 it feels like the orchestra has lifted off into outer space. Bravo!
I bought the cassette of the First Circle release when it originally came out. It has aways been my favorite and will forever stand the many tests of time.
This is just the best ever "Fitst Circle"..... I have listned to this tune a thusand times,- but this is just great. All my respect to the condutor, the band and Pat, for giving us such a great render of this milestone tune. Wow......
My Marching band EHTHS SILVER EAGLES played this, letter from home, heat of the day, and another life, for our marching band show a few years back, it was a great show, and really fun to play
The first (the clapping) is 12/8 and 10/8 , in a two-bar pattern : 3+2+3+2+2 / 3+3+2+2 . The next (the one with the vocalism) is in 22/8: four times 5/8 plus 2/8 at the end (the latter is easy audible). Then it goes to 4/ 4 etc ..
It also could be a 6/4 and 5/4 with the 3+2+3+2+2/ 3+3+2+2 being eight notes . My little sister's marching band did this song for part of their show, it truly is an amazing piece depicting the first circle of hell :) They hated and loved it at the same time. Pat Metheny is quite the mastermind
Brilliant!!! One of my fav PMG pieces. History will look back at Pat as one of the greatest composers and musicians in the history of human beings. Mozart, Bethoven, Chick Corea, Pat Metheny...
Bless his heart. And the vocalist he had also. Where did everyone go? He is a precious person, musician, composer, et al. who deserves a full orchestra behind his music. Sure we all miss the original vocalists but we're good. Blessings to Pat Metheny para cierto! Saludos mui carinosa para Usted
Everything this man compose is purely heaven...love to see him again, in concert. Thanks...Desweef, your wonderful for loading this. First LP vinyl(Fiirst Circle), and all songs are just super fantastic!
My bro's jazz band did this last year. They nailed it; personally, I like a tenor sax and trumpet in place of the vocalist. But this song is great and brings back memories. Pat Metheny ftw. |D
the vocals originally recording by Pedro Aznar, he has such a beautiful voice, Pat was and is surrounded by many amazing musicians, first Lyle of course, togheter are simply uniques. But Rodby,Wertico,Nana,Pedro Aznar, the early Jaco, and the list goes on and everybody who watches this video already knows who are those guys. sorry my english. much love. God bless Pat.he change my approach to music forever.
That's the great thing about improvisation. The improviser is totally allowed to take liberty with the energy level/style/whatever he wants to pretty much. I think it's fine. He started out simple and built the energy pretty well. Subtlety, my friend.
After listening to this more, I have decided that his playing sounds like Rainer Brüninghaus on Eberhard Weber's Colors of Chloe, though I haven't heard that in more that 20 years so I could be wrong. Can't get enough of this video.
yeah! :) VERY difficult piece to play... the metropol orchestra does a great job. I like this version and I like the singer... have to listen to it again right now. thank you very much!
Pat es un genio y que bella la cantante y lo bien que se acerca a la interpretación del canto de Pedro Aznar. La adaptación de la canción al ensamble asombrosa.
You Fool!! those 'stiffs' are many of the individual stars in the jazz community up there in North Sea.!! They have come together to support Pat Metheny ,who is arguably the greatest wandering minstrel of our time!!!!
@rkelly62 Remeber Lyle Mays composed this music with Pat Metheny. I saw the first Pat Metheny Group show at Axis in Soho in NYC. Full Circle is one of my favorite compostions. I was fortunate to see the Pat Metheny Group do Full Circle in Portland., oregon
So wonderful! I play the bass guitar part with a drumband (Cecilia Milheeze, the Netherlands). Took me so long to get the 12/8 - 10/8 "in my system" but now it's there! Oh yeah, I like the voice too!
The singer is Fay Lovsky - Don't say stupid things about her; she's a great artist from the Netherlands
I feel so big when I hear this.... life feels big and possible...
Exactly! Empowering.
The guitar arpeggio in this tune is one of very few things that makes me cry almost everytime. You can feel every human emotion in it: sadness and happiness at the same time in an inexplicable way. Stunning and unwordly at its highest ethereal level possible.
And that's why Metheny is one of the true art geniuses in our days.
***** So well put Ricky. Have loved Metheny/Mayes for years.
Many parts of the song do that to me. The song in general gets me that way.
Ricky Landi q
Pat Metheny is my favorite guitarist. Absolutely the best!!!! He does it all with his guitars.
That's the beauty of jazz. You can play one song 100 different ways and every time it can be perfect ;]

Pat Metheny and the Group as always never falters with their music, studio or live, it never changes.Mabuhay PMG!
I bought the cassette of the First Circle release when it originally came out. It has aways been my favorite and will forever stand the many tests of time.
MINE TOO!!
hey, you're not the only one listening for that stuff.
This is just the best ever "Fitst Circle"..... I have listned to this tune a thusand times,- but this is just great. All my respect to the condutor, the band and Pat, for giving us such a great render of this milestone tune. Wow......
even with a full orchestra, he can't compare with the way he sounded with lyle mays and the rest of the guys
My Marching band EHTHS SILVER EAGLES played this, letter from home, heat of the day, and another life, for our marching band show a few years back, it was a great show, and really fun to play
the woman in this video needs her own comment omg what complement to this song she was ,,,,,,, kudos to you

awesome..I play the guitar..but never could understand this..

Very simple after an hour! I stomp and clap to this beat regularly because it's so strangely catchy!!
Just imagine being in the middle of all that... Metheny has the best job in the world.

I love jazz and I love this song. I can listen to it 20 times a day. So just enjoy it and let go.
Pat Menteny is the greatest creator of music I have ever heard!!!!
I loved playing this song in high school it was the most memorable song I have ever played
Une splendeur musicale ! Un très très grand musicien contemporain que PAT METHENY , avec le Métropole Orchestra, magnifique !
I had no problem with the vocalist nor the big band treatment of the piece. Still brought a tear to my eye as it always does.
My bro's jazz band did this last year. They nailed it; personally, I like a tenor sax and trumpet in place of the vocalist. But this song is great and brings back memories. Pat Metheny ftw. |D
My favourite for over 20 years.
Thank you, Pat.
pure genius.
If anyone was wondering the name of the gal on vocals, it's Fay Lovsky.
Solemn, celebratory,.. special mood,.. it sounds like not from this world,.. then again it is,.. thank you Pat,.....

I like her voice just fine -- and there's no question that it takes real musicianship and concentration to perform this well.
if i could only gt paid to listen to this stuff all day...
looking at the music of this ... Yes the brilliance of Pat Metheny.
That's the great thing about improvisation. The improviser is totally allowed to take liberty with the energy level/style/whatever he wants to pretty much. I think it's fine. He started out simple and built the energy pretty well. Subtlety, my friend.

[avec une grande souffle] Sacre bleu! Pas possible pour mettre cet chef- d'oeuvre aux mots. Cinq etoilles et plus.
The Crossmen Drum and Bugle Corps did this song along with Third wind and A letter from Home in1998. It was incredible.
My high school marching band played First Circle and we were state finalist that year...well..every year we are state finalist...
This tune is just Awesome! I Love it!! The "Clap" at the start really sets the tone of this one! One of my All Time Favorites!!! Nothing like it.
we played this for percussion ensemble last year.... it was pretty sweet
Having such dynamics with such structure sounds soo brilliant and soo tasty!
After listening to this more, I have decided that his playing sounds like Rainer Brüninghaus on Eberhard Weber's Colors of Chloe, though I haven't heard that in more that 20 years so I could be wrong. Can't get enough of this video.
One of the best by Pat Metheny
