HemiStorm's Axial YETI XL Kit 4S Test run

- I'm taking my Axial Yeti XL out for it's first run on 4S, and I'm taking it to the beautiful historic site of Fredriksten Festning in my hometown Halden. I'm pretty confident I will get some nice speed and good runtime from the Dinogy batteries combined with the Castle Mamba Monster 2. I am using two 7.4V 6500 mAh packs to get a good feel for the car and see how it behaves on the different surfaces,
The electronics I'm running are a proven set up: the Castle Creations Mamba Monster 2 2200KV combo. Axial has put a similar setup, although rebranded, in the Yeti XL RTR, and after seeing several videos of it running I am thoroughly impressed. The Yeti is a large rig, with considerable weight, and a high torque system like this one will make it capable on a lot of different surfaces and in a variety of circumstances.

After having bad luck with a few of my more recent LiPos by Venom, I'm switching to a rather new brand called Dinogy Batteries. Dinogy offers a ton of different packs, for all sorts of applications, and for every budget. The Yeti XL will be tested on 4S first, so I opted for two Dinogy 2S 6500 mAh 65C packs to get the job done. These specs are impressive if you consider the cost, and I'm pretty confident they'll be up to the task, as Dinogy has been building a reputation for themselves in demanding applications.

The steering servo I selected is fairly middle-of-the-road, I installed a HiTec HS-7954SH. It delivers some decent torque, good speed and has good hold power, basically everything required to get those huge rims to point in the right direction.

The final thing on my list was wiring and connecting the assembly. After years of Deans connectors and being a bit fed up with shrink tubing, I have gotten some Castle wiring, and more importantly some 6.5mm Castle Connectors for the Yeti XL. I believe Castle Creations has struck gold with these, as they are easy to solder up, don't require any shrink tubing and have huge bullet connectors to deal with massive current. After installing them on the Yeti XL, I think the Castle Connectors will find their way into all of my electric rides. Stack up on solder when you get them, as they require quite a bit to get fully secured.

That look on your face when you walked up on the truck after you smacked into the brick or whatever you should’ve slowed that down that was priceless!!!
Thanks 🙏
Haha, cheers Todd!
Hey man, I really love your vids! It helped me out a ton! I just finished my Yeti XL build. Decided to run Tekin RX8 and T8 2250kv. Dedicated 4s. It's a complete monster! Wish I could share pics here. Oh well. Thanks again for your informative videos.
+Mid City Tactical Just shoot me some shots on my Facebook, I'm curious to see what you built!
Awesome to see the weather clearing up and you outside up and running again. .... finally after 7 months I got my MRI and an epidural for my back so I should be back to getting me another rc myself and the yeti kit looks like a great build
Get well soon, Shawn! Building the XL was a great experience, it went together with ease and it is an attention grabber for sure.
Yeah well I learned alot from your paint vids bro so it'll look great when I finish it up
nice vid.....but I'm more amazed by the beauty of your surroundings. ...beautiful place!
Its going to be crazy on 6s! Looks like a lot of fun.
Still can’t get over how freakin huge that thing is.
the castle system has a lot of motor cogg, check out tekin sensored system, smooth as butter in those spots when you need triger control
Great to see the running video! I came across your other videos on the XL kit and started feeling like a kid in a candy store. I went out and ordered an XL last week and it should be coming in a couple of days. I can't wait to start. It's like I'm 10 years old again. Thanks for all your vids. Ya might see mine on here in a few weeks, of course, using some tips from your painting vids also. ---> happy subscriber
Nice video, think I've found my next rc. Can't wait too see it 6s.
A tip...use a sensored esc/motor to get that slow low end controllable torque. Great video.
Looks fun as hell! Good video!
Hey Chris, I love the yeti xl but I think if I get one I would try to run the truck with a sensored 1/8 setup (Castle MMP esc with a sensored motor instead of the Castle MM2) it would help in the low speed crawling to not be so glitchie but you would still have the all out balls to the walls 6S ability..... (just a thought) because I have no plans to get one....the next rig I want it the Armma Kraton monster truggy. Great vid
That Mamba system rips
been watching your channel for a while and very informative and great models cheers
I'm running 2 Turnigy nano-tech 6.6Ah 2S 90C for my 4S runs and it's a blast! I don't know if I will ever NEED to run 6S haha!
Always like your commentary, being breathless walking up Hill lol
looks F*CKING AWESOME!!!!! can definitely take a beating i cant wait to see what its like on 6s
Hi, I’ve just got a yeti xl and was wondering if there was any other bodies I could fit on it. Also watched most of your painting videos and wow very impressive.
Looks Great, Runs Great. Amazing work.
It needs the locked rear diff to make it a better rock racer.
Thats a gorgeous spot....
A really nice vehicle, however it does like to roll over a lot doesn't it. Maybe it should be called the Axial Rock 'N' Rolla ! Anyway, good job on the build, look forward to the 6S Test.
Always enjoy your reviews so, I subbed. You recently reviewed the sensored Castle motor...looking for one of your builds using that. (Might have worked well with this one?) keep up the good work, your country is beautiful.
I'll be switching everything to sensored. I am running them in both my SCX102's and also in my Axial Bomber, and I love the smooth start up of them.
HemiStorm RC - Custom RC builds, painting videos and more, yep.
I'm too, am going with sensored on an Yeti XL build. Leaning toward Castle because of the support. Again, thanks.
Beautiful place we’re you live,as always cool vid 👍🏽
yup thats a fair beating.. not a fan of screws comming loose.. so that might be a thumbs down.. and why they did not call it a 1:6 scale idk.. hes right.. it is
Looks awesome also looks like a sensored setup would help with crawling
True, and more lock on the diffs. In this video I was really getting a feel for it to see what it does, and also what it doesn't. As a crawler, not the best choice. As a rock racer, perhaps. But as a basher, as I've found out by now, it is excellent!
+HemiStorm RC - Custom RC builds, painting videos and more. Dude you are dutch. Jij bent duidelijk een nederlander accent ftw
Nice. Do you really think it needs 6s for anything besides breaking parts?
you have a very nervous nitro gas finger!
Thanks i saw this video. It saves me 700€!
This one sided wheel lift in the front is very useless in any bah or race condition.
I took my erevo or savage for bashing, and my summit or any axial for semi crawling.
AWESOME VIDEO
Hey brother new subscriber really loving your content your productions 10 thumbs up keep up the good work oh yeah I hooked up with your Channel Mr. RC sparks sent me Your way Mr. like he’s an adult!!!🤭
Thanks 🙏
Would locking the rear diff stop the bad handling?
Nice Build...
Do you guys/gals suggest getting a different controller for it? Is it even possible?
hi chris
I'm in 2 minds atm whether to get this kit or not, my main concern is the back looks very loose and seems to get very squirrelly when you put the power down. have you noticed this or have you found a way to tighten the back end up?
cheers
chris
:)
+Chris Rock Hi Chris, it's inherent to the design of a car with a solid rear axle, I find it very entertaining in terms of driving though. Compared to the stock RTR, the included sway bar and two stage shocks add a whole lot of rigidity.
Thanks for your input chris I think I may just go ahead and buy one you seem to have a ball with your one anyway! So they can't be that bad :p HemiStorm RC - Custom RC builds, painting videos and more
Is it right that the gears of the Yeti are realy loud?
What the pro,s and con,s on this rig after 3 years ?
Mmm....I have one, building it...looks like it's not a crawler, but I don't think that it was made to be one, but people think that it is because Axial is known for crawlers. But your making a mistake if you think the Yeti XL is a crawler, no it's a desert racer, like the Baja 5000....yes that's what it's looks like it does....now to finish my build...ahahah
Great vid! 8 people wished they had your stuff, talent and your awesomeness! *haters gonna hate*
Very formula off-road!
this axial yeti xl is as big as my 1:6th scale FG Tr 4 amazingly enough or atleast thats what the mesurements say.
+Rc Addict It is as big as my FG TR4 indeed!
You need the 2 speed trans gears bad!
I just bought the Mamba monster 2200kv motor and esc what kind of battery do u recommend?
Anything 3 cell. I had great luck with brands like Dingy, or if you want to spend a bit more, MaxAmps.
are the diffs locked
where did you get the 17mm nuts instead of the 8mm
this is a kit. it comes with the 17mm.
lock the rear diff to climb up rocks
Nice
nice!!
what brand battery work with castle systems
Any brand, as long as the discharge rate is decent enough.
Nice run , sounds like it wasn't even working hard
cool
KevinMillard68 I think only paint job is cool. Axial disappointed me. Not a crawler not a monster. disposed to flip.
Maxim Mashkin i think the yeti both sizes are way over priced for what you get but they are nice
Maxim Mashkin I agree with you! Im building mine. It's not a crawler! But a Desert Racer! Like the Baja 5000 or something, Axial makes crawlers. But the XL is not one! Just because it was made by Axial. If you treat it as a Desert Racer....your going to have more fun with it! :)
Halden?!🤔
Do you liv in Norway
Jens the gamer I do, I live in Halden.
needs sensored setup for sure.
For the low speed stuff it does. For what I'm currently doing to it, not so much, haha! Just wait for what's to come, I've been brutal to it.
Stop smoking!! Lol =P
I know, haha!
beautiful job
please stop throttling like a nitro car
your better than that
and yes stop smoking
I couldn't take all the throttle tapping so I quit watching the video
+Damion Carver That's cool. Total anarchy.
memories of my castle combos catching fire make me cringe every time i hear that horrendous castle whine. Never again i say.... never again. Tekin.
great video !👍👍 Have you tried Vaping instead of smoking?? I was a half pack a day smoker for 20 years and was sceptical but with the right flavor and amount of nicotine strength, was the same feeling as taking a drag off a cigarette.
+Trevor O'Connor Vaping isn't that common on my side of the globe. My best bet is cutting down and quitting, haha!
