DOUBLE ESC and MOTOR - HemiStorm's Axial Yeti XXL

  • 7.1 kilograms of RC, four 3-cell 11.1V 6500mAh Dinogy batteries (put in series to become 2x6s), two Mamba Monster X ESC's, blower shrouds and Castle Creations 1515 to power the front and the back. Those are the ingredients that I will be using for this video.
    I'm continuing work on my Axial Yeti XXL. That's right, double X! In a previous video, which you can find in the playlist, I split up two brand new Axial Yeti XL kits. A full spec list and a full list of downloadable drawings will be available once the project is entirely finished.
    It's wiring time! Hooking up a dual ESC setup is new to me, and it took a bit of research to get it done right. In this video I explain how I have tried to get the power drain to be as even as possible. I also take you through the process of setting it up, laying it out and finally tidying it up. After a brief test of all systems I can tell you one thing: This thing is WAY overpowered, it's scary!
    For now, it is time to fuse the chassis halves together. I'm doing that using a tabletop CNC machine called the X-Carve, which has been supplied to me by a company called Inventables. In the previous video you have seen my initial impressions about this tool, in this one you see how it actually applies to the RC cars that I built.
    I was very skeptical at first. I did not have high hopes on getting the machine to run, or even being to be able to use it for something with an RC application without being a true headache. Turns out I was worried about nothing. I'm no poster boy. I still don't sugarcoat anything. Positive reviews or leaving out negative aspects of a product by trying to persuade me in any shape or form are just not me. So I will just say it flat out: this X-Carve kicks some serious ass! So far I've machined Delrin and carbonfiber, it will in the future even be used for aluminium, and it just doesn't stop to amaze me. To put it like this: for the kind of cash I spend on a cellphone you can get one of these. Seeing the possibilities it offers it's a pretty amazing concept, and most importantly (for me as a novice in CNC) exceptionally user friendly.
    If you haven't understood it to the fullest from the video, from here on out you will see projects occur on my channel which I made using the X-Carve. On the Inventables website all drawings and a written description will be made available, free to use. This means what I'm making in my video, you can make at home, or at a friend's home, or at work, anywhere you have an X-Carve available.
    What I do and try to explain in my videos is for you to have fun with, to hopefully inspire you, and to share with like minded people. This device just opened up an entirely new era in what is possible.
    Any questions, as always, just shoot them in the comments box and I will try my best to answer them.
    Have a look at the Inventables website and online shop: www.inventable...
    Check out Easel in the following link: www.inventable...
    The electronics I'm running are Castle Creations Mamba Monster X 2200KV combos. The Yeti is a large rig, with considerable weight, and a high torque system like this one will make it capable on a lot of different surfaces and in a variety of circumstances.
    www.castlecreat...
    After having bad luck with a few of my more recent LiPos by Venom, I'm switching to a rather new brand called Dinogy Batteries. Dinogy offers a ton of different packs, for all sorts of applications, and for every budget. The Yeti XL will be tested on 4S first, so I opted for two Dinogy 2S 6500 mAh 65C packs to get the job done. These specs are impressive if you consider the cost, and I'm pretty confident they'll be up to the task, as Dinogy has been building a reputation for themselves in demanding applications.

    hey Chris the Vanquish rear end is definitely the best mod when I installed my beveled gears I had to grind the back of the pinion down to compensate for the "no shims required" my vanquish Axial wouldn't turn after I tightened the differental bearing carrier . I'm running the D Hawk bulkhead up front and Boca bearing Green Seal throughout the vehicle . I'm loving my Dhawk 2 speed and for once I can bash this beast and come home smiling!!! The beveled cut gears are a fault design causing XL heads serious problems!! I went through 3 axels and 3 bulkheads till I figured it out ... maybe you can connect to the community about this issue when you face it... The stock "plastic" has enough give but the Vanquish makes it obvious!! good luck homie!! keep up the awesome work !!

    Very innovative build, expensive, but who cares I didn't pay for it!!! Keep it up very unique rig. Cant wait to see how it performs, you have now a electronic manual function "Quattro" drive, search out you can use those thumb switches to add/subtract in various increments the "drive" control of the front/rear. ie In a tight track situation I would overspin the front to get more "turn". I love my XR10, you have a 1/5 scale one!!! haha Subscribed.

  • @thekeytoairpower
    @thekeytoairpower 8 років тому

    I am planning a similar drive train on an X0-1. I have one concern with your battery setup: I usually run savox servos, which can draw enough power to brown out the esc (my sidewinder equipped car would stop moving at full lock if epa was not set perfectly). this means that the esc whose bec is being used is going to draw its battery down faster. Running pairs of batteries in series to create a pair of 6s then putting them in parallel would prevent one set of batteries draining faster.

    • @hemistormrc
      @hemistormrc  8 років тому

      I considered it, but if one battery goes flat there is no way of telling, plus the looms would have been even more complicated. I will try it as is first, but I have high hopes to be honest. Good input though, let me know how you get along with yours!

  • @skagerstrom
    @skagerstrom 8 років тому

    Awesome build! Wondering though - wouldn't the steering servo use much more power than the RX and fans combined?
    Also thinking, a flight radio with mixers would do that system good. At least you could make it FWD or RWD and mix the second ESC to for example a knob. Or to the elevator control. Ideal would be a mix that gives 100/100 at center stick, and then when say pushing the elevator forward (same stick as steering) the car would be more RWD and oversteer (lowering the EXPO rate for the rear ESC). And vice versa. In your mind it would be like pushing the elevator forward for more "wight" in front and backward for more "weight" in the back :P Wuld brobably be quite easy to master.
    Not sure if that is possible though. It would have to be like using EXPO mix and then have it to give 100% at center stick. I guess it would probably just give 50 EXPO to booth throttle channels on center stick though :/ Not sure how advanced the better radios are. I only have a DX6i :P

    • @hemistormrc
      @hemistormrc  8 років тому

      +Roger Skagerström Hi Roger! All true, but I really do not like to steer a car with a stick radio. The options would indeed be far superior! Perhaps a more advanced pistol grip radio will join the fleet in the future, I have been looking at the futaba 4pxr and really like what I see!

    awesome job !!! Thanks for the info !! Im getting ready to create a high clearance fully independent Yeti XL ... Are you getting a DHAWK bulkhead ? I've got a Vanquish Axle coming for my bulletproof xl build... What do you the Vanquish ? I just ordered the 2 speed from DHAWK .... cant wait BarHarborBasher RRC

      @hemistormrc  8 років тому

      +BarharborBasher I'm trying with the updated Axial gears up front first to see how that goes. The Vanquish axle is on the car, and I dare say it is the best upgrade you can buy for this vehicle. I'm crossing my fingers that durability will no longer be an issue with these couple of adjustments in place, as I love how these XL's drive.

    Wait wait, please, could you explain one more time - the front esc power steering servo and receiver. So it`s not exact amount of power. The front ESC would will drain different amount of power from the batteries and the second esc will work properly even with the 2 blowers. So how did u solve the problem with the esc where is hooked up the servo and receiver? Any bec installed?

    • @hemistormrc
      @hemistormrc  8 років тому +1

      The internal BEC on the X is actually a very reliable one. With lights added, there is a pretty even power draw in both setups. Using the Castle Link I've been able to read out RPM's on both motors and fine tuned it to as close of a match as I could. I hope this helps!

  • @mrmadmike427
    @mrmadmike427 8 років тому

    well spoken Chris .. its a beast.. have you gotten and messages from Axial or Castle about it ??? ... i bet you they will love your idea ... just saying Best of luck , and i'm sure the paint will be amazing as always .. :)

    One more question...how did you do the maths about the battery? I started a similar project, but can`t explain to myself about the speed of the model (and this is crutual moment for the battery boxes i made). For example - 3s powering front and 3s powering the back, is this the speed of regular 6s model?

    • @hemistormrc
      @hemistormrc  6 років тому +1

      If you have 3S front, and 3S back, it is still considered 3S. You are after all powering each individual motor with 3 cells. I hope this helps!

  • @mcdaw
    @mcdaw 8 років тому

    awesome build but you should have used a CC Pro bec to run your radio components. Would have probably series'ed pairs, then parralled the 4 batteries through a cap pac to each esc.. but your set up will run too. just not evenly if you do to much dig stuff. Nit picky bs but for a build of this quallity... lets not sacrifice performance for a clean wire set up....

    • @hemistormrc
      @hemistormrc  8 років тому

      +Dawson McElhany Valid points! The ESC read out shows that the motors are not even 100 rpm off from one other, so I'm quite hopeful that the drivetrain will forgive that inconsistency on loose terrain.

    whats the benefits of this double motor and esc setup? faster? longer run times?

    • @hemistormrc
      @hemistormrc  8 років тому

      Hi there. Faster, more power to shift less weight, relatively more torque, the ability to set it up for over-/underdrive, the possibility to set up dig, and no need to reengineer the drive train after stretching the chassis five inches. Run longer and run cooler and faster. All in all, lots of benefits.
