Hey,just wanted to ask cause I got confused, what is the difference between Documentary Foundations and advanced documentary, cause looked at what I will learn there and both of them have pretty similar things, so if you can I would really appreciate it if you can tell me in detail about each one, like do I learn how to script a documentary in foundation while in advanced I don't. Also, I saw that the advanced one had bi weekly calls, do I not get that in the foundation one? Thanks in advance, I just started film school in israel but I want to also really learn how to physically make complicated films, we only start to really make stuff in the second year, right now I only learn stupid theories and history@@markbone

I can really connect with your tip regarding "The story needs to be the most important part of your story" I filmed ultrarunners over a 2 day event with a Nikon Z7 and a rode shotgun mic as that is all I had. I was truly overwhelmed that over 65k views later on my 50 minute documentary gained so much traction as many people said it was the story that made them watch until the end. So appreciative of your insights and encouragement to so many.
"As above, so below." Very helpful advice. At my extremely amateur level, the same principles apply. I'm 82, use an iPhone 16 Pro for short music performances. Small? Check. Unobtrusive? Check. Audio? Check. ProRes Log HLG? Check. My main gig is writing, and video has to be a smooth workflow with reasonable compromises.
I really appreciate the knowledge and time you all take to help creators get better. No ones has asked you but you do so anyway. That is really respectable

I end up on a lot of Doco shoots where Im either by myself or with a pretty skeleton crew and the further on I get in my career the more I realise how common this is - even on what would look like fairly high end projects from an outside perspective. Loved watching this - and looks like your projects gonna come up super nice

Great choice on the FX3 and FX6 combo for the Cbum doc. You hit the nail on the head with the intimacy thought - having an oversized camera like the ARRI can take away from it. I found myself using this technique that you taught me when you have less gear it makes the shoot flow smoothly instead of focusing on how much gear you brought. 1 camera, 2 lens, Shotgun mic is good enough.
Love this. The best documentary footage I've ever shot was when I was just by myself or with one other person (wife/audio lady/director combo usually), so I hear that. In the last decade, a lot of money has been thrown at docs, but at the detriment of the craft itself - now all we have is highly-produced, great looking but soulless, stilted nonsense. People playing big-crew filmmakers, when they need to be focus on capturing REAL moments IN-SCENE. Sounds like that's the route you went and I'm glad you did - can't wait to see those intimate/raw/REAL moments. Also, the C70 > FX6 all day, e'er day.

Hey Mark! Foundations is geared towards those who haven’t released a short documentary (or at least one they aren’t proud of) and advanced is designed to help you go deeper and find your voice as a director. The bi-weekly calls in advanced allow you to get feedback on your projects also
4 Channels of Audio is so clutch, I've been using it on the C300 and C70 for years. I LOVE hooking up a stereo mic for atmos and landscape work. Recording stereo audio for exterior landscapes with the rode videomic x direct into a 3.5mm jack or via dual xlr just sounds insanely great to the ears for atmos coverage.
