  • The Rise and Fall of Slenderman. Today we're gonna be looking into the Rise and Fall of Slenderman. Talk a little bit of history about the slenderman and how his Rise came to be! Then we'll move onto what we believe to be the fall of the widley meme'd Slenderman.
    Slenderman used to be a pretty terrifying creature to many Users who discovered him on the internet. But since his huge leap to the mainstream back in 2012. Slendermans presence has not been the same.
    Sony pictures not too long ago released a slender man trailer for a slenderman movie arriving in theatres in August. We thought this would be a good opportunity to look into this topic a little more and find out if it really is a good idea to create a Slenderman movie after it's recent creepy factor decline.

    It's over-saturation of the market, basically.
    I'm a *huge* fan of Slender Man myself. IMO, series like Marble Hornets, TribeTwelve, EverymanHYBRID, etc do horror right. You don't see the glut of main characters making decisions so ridiculously ignorant that you basically cheer for them to die in the Slenderverse like you do in Hollywood horror. In the Slenderverse, you could make all the smartest decisions possible, and it doesn't matter. And that's what makes Slender Man so terrifying to me; once you're targeted, that's it. It's over.
    Ever since I got into the Slenderverse, I've had an idea for a Slenderverse series that starts out as a review/reaction channel hosted by two brothers, one recently out of a mental home, to various different Slenderverse stories (Marble Hornets, TribeTwelve, EverymanHYBRID, Keratin Gardens, etc... so the entire Slenderverse would be fiction in this series) that would slowly devolve into a typical Slenderverse series (the brother's lives would slowly devolve into hell as they're stalked by a creepy murderous person in a mask), except that it would never actually acknowledge the existence of Slender Man, instead leaving that question open to viewers to answer (the last lines of the series would be "he's not real. He's fiction. ... right?"... and all clues would be ambiguous, so they can be used to answer the question either way). So all clips showing Slender Man at all would come from other Slenderverse series as part of the "reviews/reactions"...
    But thanks to the saturation (and the lack of good camera and video editing skills, and the fact that I live in New York while my brother lives in Georgia), I've never really had the motivation to create it. Slender Man is *everywhere* now, to the point that I'm not sure anyone *wants* anymore Slender Man stuff. As for the movie... I want to see it, but I'm going to wait for reviews, first. It's Hollywood, so I don't trust them to treat the material well... but we'll see.

      I like Slender Man because he reminds me of something of Lovecraft mythos. He is cosmic horror. Unknown, No Explanation, Beyond Human Understanding, and drives those who see him Mad. Lovecraft brand of horror is so great in my opinion. I read him at night to relax, and sometimes to be afraid. I love his writing, his stories. It's an awesome idea that the human mind is covered by a thin veil, like an island in the ocean. And what's beyond can drive you completely insane. I love it.

    This creepy pastas always make me wonder who owns the IP of slender man and other internet creatures, does the person that made the original post have any legal ownership or does the fact that you posted it on the internet as a story in the hopes of becoming an urban legend make you give up the rights to the idea, I mean a major Hollywood movie is being made and someone is gonna get payed.

    • @InsideAMindInsideAMind
      @InsideAMindInsideAMind  6 років тому +19

      Well the creator of the original Slenderman post is actually a writer in this Hollywood movie. But you are right, it's a tricky one to establish full rights to something you post on the internet :/

      @@InsideAMindInsideAMind Hmm I think the legal copyright is much more different for Slenderman as the being we are mostly thinking of is the one comprised as a mix of Marblehornets and the original Slenderman….
      My question is if the writer got credit for the game. If not then it might be under free use (The character not the story... this is how Fanfics and Fanart stay alive is thanks to free use...)

      just here to say the people who wrote the script to the movie and did the rest of the work are getting the paycheck for that movie. should the original get a part the only part really played here is creating the concept of slenderman but a lot of work goes into creating a film im not sure how it should go tbh. what % would you want

    In my eyes, Slenderman fell when the game came out and he(it?) hit the mainstream, but not because we "know everything" about him. After all, every interpretation is different, and we can't say Slenderman (Victor Surge), the Operator (Marble Hornets), and the Administrator (Tribe Twelve) are the same because they have different abilities, and are essentially different characters in every way beyond appearance. Even The Eight Pages's Slenderman acts different from other interpretations, with his protectiveness over the eponymous pages being something never seen in other material. The way I see it, Slenderman lost its appeal to the original fans because of the people who came from T8P, people who watched PewDiePie and other UA-camrs play it or played it themselves and simply thought the appeal was jumpscares, without knowing what actually made Slenderman terrifying in the first place, and since the T8P fans outnumber the original fans, the common interpretation of Slenderman is that he's simple jumpscare material. This is also what has me worried for the Slenderman movie.
    Tl;dr: No one knows Slenderman like the original fans did anymore.
    EDIT: Forgot to say, very nice video overall and well said.

    • @cosmos1282
      @cosmos1282 6 років тому

      Errin Hedgepeth exactly seriously I actually still find everything scary about Slenderman even though everyone has a general idea of him and his abilities but fail to realize that each variation is exactly that a different version of the slender creature. Meaning he will always be scary because he is never the same and always an unknown.

    For me personally, I find what makes slender man scary is the fact that it defies the things we view as "normal", such as it lacking a face (from what we see of it), a slender body that conceals multiple tentacles (?) and having the ability to teleport from long distances, things we don't normally see in the real world.

    Honestly, it would have been cool if they named the movie "the operator," would give a little wink to the diehards, and the people that just know slenderman by name and face(or lack of one) would be given a sense of mystery maybe?

    I'd say it's kind of brilliant that the people took something terrifying and made it fun. Not in the sense that it's made it better, but that we've poked fun at a (admittedly fictional) terrifying cosmic entity rather than remaining in fear.

    • @InsideAMindInsideAMind
      @InsideAMindInsideAMind  6 років тому

      Oh absolutely, it shows that we can make the biggest villains a laughing stock. So when a real life bad guy tries to strike fear into us, we can certainly rely on the internets to stop that from happening:)

    I first found Marble Hornets when they were on about Entry #20 or so? Right when Masky was introduced.
    Slenderman horrified me at that time. It took over my life, really, keeping me awake at night and drawing him and theorizing about him. I took it waaay too seriously as a teenager.
    My friends even edited photos of their homes and sent them to me cause they knew it'd scare me, saying that I summoned him or something because of my interest in him.
    When Slender came out, I was disappointed to see that so many people had forgotten the mystery behind Marble Hornets. Most people forget it even existed, or didn't know about it in the first place.
    I'm really glad you mentioned it. It means a lot, even if it was a horrifying part of my teenage period.
    (Also, I hope you laugh like that always, for that long, at every joke)

    • @InsideAMindInsideAMind
      @InsideAMindInsideAMind  6 років тому

      I laugh like that at every joke I tell myself ;) Yeah, after the Slender game was released a lot of people got confused with the lore.
      In future I think more people will come across the show and it'll build up a bigger following, it just needs to be found by the right people :)
