Both, Massa and Damon Hill were delivering pizzas to fund their careers, Michael Schumacher's parents worked few jobs at once to fund his career, Vettel's parents did the same. Bottas was not very wealthy as well. And you could even take Niki Lauda story, he used his mind to get the money for racing, because even though his family was extremely wealthy, they did not approve his passion for racing. So he did it on his own and yet to this day, after growing up as "a spoiled kid" which he did not like, and after his major businesses, he is still humble. I believe Fernando Alonso was not as wealthy as well.
Alonso got help from a local karting club where his dad had to do some work and he got a chance to drive around. So he got help. Lauda isn't a proper example here, since he was able to load money based on his family. Also, if he would've failed, his family would always be there. Kinda like Kobayashi. His father (who's rich) didn't really like him going for racing instead of getting an education, but said he'd support him, but if he failed he'd have to work in his dad's sushi restaurant and make a career there. Nigel Mansell's dad was an engineer and Mansell was working as an aerospace engineer when he was in Formula Ford. My father was the complete opposite. Whatever I did he would criticize and put me down. He wrecked my confidence and growing up I never believed in my self and suffered from low self esteem. I forgave him and we are on good terms. God has blessed me with children and I'm going to try my best to give them self confidence and belief. My hats off to you Hamilton Snr.
