  • #darbarfestival | “In Harry Potter, there’s a wand choosing scene where the wand and its user need to have a connect. The sitar too broadly works in a similar style” (Niladri Kumar)
    Learn more about the music:
    Niladri Kumar is known for his expansive modern sitar style, stretching the boundaries of classical music. Trained under his father, a disciple of Ravi Shankar, he was recognised as a prodigy. He has since developed an extraordinary technical command of his instrument, complete with dextrous double stops, whispering string bends, and rapid taans [fast improvised lines]. He makes forays into film composition and is the inventor of the ‘zitar’ - a curious hybrid of electric guitar and sitar. Today he tours extensively with Zakir Hussain’s groups as well as a solo artist.
    Shree is a devotional sunset raga with ancient roots. The name has sacred origins, representing humanity’s material relation with the world (as opposed to ‘Om’, which represents our spiritual dimensions). It is associated with Lord Shiva, the destroyer and transformer, and Lakshmi, the giver of wealth and prosperity, and also with various Sikh saints, many of whom composed in the raga. Sitarist-scholar Deepak Raja quotes legendary vocalist Omkarnath Thakur as considering Shree to be a raga of fear: “The prescribed time for performing this raga (around sunset) is the time when nature and humans are at peace, but the disembodied spirits (of whom Shiva is the Lord) become active, and aid the black magic of Tantriks”.
    It is considered among the most difficult ragas to master. Hailing from Purvi thaat, it takes the swaras SrGMPdNS, with Re and Pa as the vadi-samvadi pairing [king and queen notes]. The core of the raga is to be found in the movement between these two notes, with musicians employing all manner of ornamentations to explore their co-relationship. The raga is typically elaborated in madhya and taar saptaks [middle and upper octaves]. A range of different sruti [microtones] are used, with many variants of Re and Dha in use.
    Recorded by Darbar in 2014, in London:

    If a few brief minutes of Niladri aren't enough…watch his full 65-minute performance of Raag Bhimpalasi in pristine HD on the Darbar Player, along with dozens of other captivating concerts: www.darbarplayer.com/videos/nildari-kumar-pandit-shubhankar-banerjee-raag-bhimpalasi
    We'd like to upload everything for free - but filming, editing, and hosting cost money, and we’re a small not-for-profit organisation. Signing up to the Darbar Player costs about the same as a couple of coffees a month ($5), which we hope is an excellent price for such a wealth of unique music.

    A stream of music which starts with the usual keys but soon awakens about its individual nature and takes a turn never taken before. Then it conflicts with itself, halts every now and then, hesitates and looks back every now and then to see if it had been right about changing course. Then it rebels against its own disloyal doubts which were born out of the fear that it will always be alone, always be lonely. And then, ultimately, winds around the central string of its life as a dancing ivy, whirling evermore tightly, getting evermore closer till it is finally fulfilled, finally gratified, finally tired enough to go to bed never to wake up again.
    It would not be wrong to call it an 'existentialist' offspring of classical music.
    I bow to thee, Nildari Kumar.

      Sid Ha .. because there is hip hop/honey sing/"char botal vodka"/sherly sithia (auto tuner Queens)etc...there they can dance like nagin dance ..but in classical u have to sit beside the player and listen to his/her music ..for this and many other reasons this master piece has only few views compare it's materials..

    Now-a-days...classical musics are becoming very shallow.....we feel great when the performer plays very fast. The alap - part, which brings depth of any raga is missing. The player does not even go to the third or 4th string. Seldom, a few play a few stroke in the 2nd string. Same is in Sarod, too.

    • @manujmukherjee4234
      @manujmukherjee4234 6 років тому

      Absolutely agreed, except for one part. The so called shallow performers are not even fast. The better performers like Ravi Shankar, Nikhil Banerjee or Ilyas Khan, or say Ali Akbar Khan, Bahadur Khan or Sharan Rani in Sarod were way more faster when it came to the faster parts as well. Plus, how to describe it, the weight behind the strokes is also on a rapid decline.

      Even i wonder why so many playing strings if only two are being played.....

      Himanshu Mehra in sitar, not all strings are used to play notes. For example in vilayat Khan style there are totally 6 strings. In that only one is main playing string and other one is also playing string where you can play lower octave notes. Other two strings are just support strings. They fill your music. Last two strings are of course Chikari strings(to fill the gap between two note strikes and to create the rhythm) . In Ravishankar style, there are 7 strings out of which 3 or 4 strings are used to play the notes.

      Albert is saying that he loves it so much that he wants to give multiple 'like's, but it's too bad, that he can give only one.
      And without understanding it, you reacted harshly.
