Debasmita Bhattacharya is one of India’s finest young sarod players, representing the rich musical tradition of her native Kolkata. Her style blends the expansive mindset of modern musicians with an old-school patience. She began learning with her sarodi father Debashish Bhattacharya, then entered the tutelage of the late maestro Buddhadev Das Gupta. She made an acclaimed UK debut in 2017, and continues to demonstrate that gender should be no barrier to instrumental mastery. “[The sarod] is considered as a male dominated instrument…I accepted the challenge and every morning I try to prove myself by improving my playing...music has no boundaries...it is only for the human.”
Debasmita on Indian classical’s global audience: “I ended up my tour with Darbar Festival. It was really interesting to observe the Western audience...what really amazed me is that Western audiences respond to Indian music the same way we do. They are very attentive and particular. They value silence and space between notes.”
Bhimpalasi is an afternoon raga, said to evoke sringara [attraction, romantic love]. It uses the notes of Kafi thaat, with an aroha [ascent] of nSgmPnS and an avroh [descent] of SnDPmgRS. Characteristically, Dha and Re only appear in the descending line, and tend to be approached from the notes immediately above. Ma is the vadi [king note]. It is similar in shape to the Western Dorian mode, and the closest Carnatic raga is Abheri.

Later I discovered Hariprasad Chaurasia the flute master himself. Took a cassette of him to Maui, Hawaii.
What a blessing that was.
Then found L. Shankar and his double neck violin 🎻........
I've seen him with Zakir three times. In Marin, S.F., and in Berkeley. Mind blowing. Heart transforming.
India is the motherland as far as I am concerned. For music and the highest wisdom and spiritual enlightenment.

This is music played with skill and devotion and most important: it is happy making music. I have never seen Debasmita Bhattacharya perform in real, unlucky me, happy the ones who have! And how happy the sarod will be to have such a performer.

What an emotional instrument
Tugs at the heart strings...
Its not so much the instrument or the scale, its everything. Its about how each individual note is played. In my experience so far, playing even a regular guitar in the "style of raga" (though I don't truly understand the word) is the single best thing I can do when I need to clear my mind and concentrate. It may just be the key...
Brilliant soulful recital. I pray that this artist will maintain this evocative approach throughout her career. In an age when musicians try to dazzle the audience instead of exploring a raga, Debasmita is like a whiff of fresh breeze.
What is the instrument she's seen playing? It makes me feel like I'm a coiling smoke, wafting up into the night sky, twirling and swirling into another lifetime!
Shakir Othman she is playing Classical Indian Instrument named Sarod.
Sarod and Rabab are close cousins and they originate from Afghanistan and came to India through the process of migration of artists like Ustad Hafiz Khan the father of Ustad Amjad Khan. Now after a long time it has been adopted and became an Indian instrument.

I love and have always loved the versatility of Bhimpalasi and hearing it on this beautiful instrument brings tears to my eyes.
She is so engrossed in playing..it seems as if they both are one. It's so mystical to watch her.
I attended her recital at the London Nehru Centre the other night. She played two Raagas very impressively. She is a leading Sarodiya among India's younger generation.
