  • Just what do you think you're doing, Dave? Making a sleeper computer based on the classic film "2001 A Space Odyssey," of course! That and paying homage to one of the greatest AI companions in fiction: HAL 9000.

    Everyone can rest easy; the cpu fan has been turned around and is facing the right way now! Ha! I've only been putting computers together for 25 years ;)

    I think what’s most impressive is how cleanly you built the back of the case.. if you didn’t show the before pic I never would have thought otherwise

    In my opinion, most of the older 80's and 90's Pc cases we're absolutely ugly with the patterns and weird designs they came out with. However, yours looks clean, organized, and not too wild. It just looks fresh and simple with a touch of modernism. I dig it. Good job.

      Thank you! The designs were definitely hit and miss. I guess that's true of today as well...

    The hole was intended for a lock cylinder,as seen in older model of pc's used to be a safety feature never took off (key lock)

      Aha! Which is interesting since it has another key lock.

      @@GamingRetro yes sometimes a cover lock and a switch ,these features were included in aftermarket cases long after it was obsolete it took a few years to vanish from the designs

    A GTX 1080 is more than enough for the next few years, I'm still running a 970, about to upgrade to a Fury X because of the water cooling. And I'm still running a Sandy Bridge i7

      Hopefully! Though my Ryzen 3600 probably won't even bottleneck an RTX 2080 Ti, so the next upgrade will still probably be the GPU.

    I love the case on your opening PC...can you give me any pointers on finding one of those on ebay? I can never seem to find a mid tower, with a rocker, with that grill front and a turbo button...I know I am picky...but that case is literally the one I have been looking for, for ages! Awesome build by the way, enjoying the videos. Keep it up man.

    Recently built a htpc for my living room. Used old parts from previous builds. I didn't like the case so I went to ebay to look for old 90s cases. My goodness they are too expensive. Couldn't find anything locally. I instead went and bought a modern very unique case. Would have loved to do something like yours though

    Here is a thought for the turbo light is to replace it with a dual color (maybe red & green) and have it hooked up to both power and the HD light. If you want to disable one (I am leaning towards the HD one on the turbo) is to use the turbo switch to activate or deactivate it. It will still show the one that is not able to be turned on or off. It kind of adds one more blinking light to the system.

    First rule of a sleeper: build NO RGB, because those systems didn't have any except for one green LED on some motherboards to indicate power.
    Second rule of a sleeper build: keep the exterior as authentic as possible, like 99.9% authentic.
    Third rule of a sleeper build (this is the most difficult part): try to incorporate the existing front/top/side IO as well as CD/Floppy/tape drives
    Keep those 3 rules in mind for any future sleeper builds and your sleepers looks and functionality won't betray it's looks until crunch time.
    If I didn't live off of a Social Security Disability Benefit then I would have spent my life perfecting the ultimate sleeper build that no one could tell that there's a modern gaming system inside.

    I'm doing a sleeper build myself in an old ATX case and will be using m. 2 drives to vit back on unessecary wiring.
    You'd massively improve temps with better cable management.

    • @GamingRetro
      @GamingRetro  2 роки тому

      Yeah I get it. Very little room to hide cables in older cases. The airflow isn't affected too much though, so I think it's mainly cosmetic. Not a big deal with no case window :)

  • @user-blabla-47854
    @user-blabla-47854 2 роки тому

    In AT towers, ATX PSU gets upside down. And that may affect air flow. Or not. Maybe I missed that part, but did you address that? Is that why you drilled the top of the case? And why you didn't drill holes to mount PSU with fan looking down?

    Very good, you gave me an idea to build my own PC, since I have 2 old cases, one of the 90s and the other from the beginning of 2000, the only problem I would have would be to adapt the USB and audio connections to a current motherboard. greetings from Argentina

    • @GamingRetro

    i already read that you turned the fan on the CPU Cooler.

    • @GamingRetro

      The airflow is pretty good now; I even upgraded the rear fan. But yeah I really need a modular power supply to get some of the extra wires out of the way.

      @@GamingRetro could u please re-check with a piece of paper or something on top of that fan? Since from the video it seem that the back of the fan looked upward... the side of the fan usually have arrow mark to show the flow direction.. and the part with most writing and the part that have the cable routing is the exhaust part...

    • @GamingRetro
      @GamingRetro  5 років тому +1

      Cable management is quite challenging with this case. An AT case like this was not at all designed for modern hardware or with much concern for air flow.
