There are after market extension bars u can get that attaches to the 1/4 20, tripod thread at the bottom of the camcorder. Some extend to 1 side while some extend to both. They come with a combination of cold shoe mounts or 1/4 20 tripod threads.
Wonderful. I was holding back getting this camcorder specifically because I want the ability to attach filter. I think this is a major omission by Sony. I just KNEW someone else had cracked the nut on how to do this. Thanks!
Good idea to use a 49mm UV to protect the lens, even if you go nowhere near the sea the open/close shutter cover on these cameras is not great & dust will get through wherever you are.. but you should do this as soon as possible and epoxying a step-up ring onto your new camcorder will kill the warranty! A better way of doing it is to get a cheap 49mm filter & remove the glass.. the filter ring should be tight push-fit onto the front (may need to file inside of filter slightly or maybe not), allowing you to use 49mm filters without invalidating your warranty.
Nice job patiently explaining the battery and cold shoe opportunities. It’s great to see how - for mere pennies - you drive more value out of this awesome $200 hi-def handycam. The Sony 405’s zoom, along with my insta 360 GO cam, can gather 98% of the shots I need. $600 on another camera like the Sony AX53 might buy the remaining 2%. But so can a cold shoe light mount, along with a lens adapter (you show in the other video) and an ND filter, and I’ll be complete! If you haven’t already, Consider checking out that little hand-grip tripod with buttons and short cable that controls the handycam’s shooting, zoom, and power on-off. Newmowa SG-SR1-NMW. Near-perfect results at a budget price!
Super ideas. tHanks for posting this. I just filmed and posted a video....I bought the camera for the zoom feature and I'm more than happy. I had no idea the camera was so small and light.
Thanks for commenting. Yes, it is delightfully small and light weights which makes it very easy to take around with you. If you're particularly interested in the zooming feature, you'll most certainly want to get yourself a small tripod and the remote control to give you great results.
Do you know if glueing a step-up ring in order to attach a fish-eye lens is a good idea? My concern is whether the built-in lens being wide angle would cause distortion when trying to add another lens.
I love what u did with this and i just got 1 and attempting to imitate your build. Can you please give me tips on how to add the cover that you glued on. How did you know it was straight and flat? In case i want to add other lenses to it without warping the shot
I think you are speaking of the Step-up-ring. Just center it by eye and stand the camera up with the step-up ring facing downward while the epoxy dries.
You could fit a Cokin A type filter housing with a 49mm adapter and use any number of Cokin special effect filters in it but i wouldn't bother trying to use an add-on lens, the image quality would be crap.
Thank you for your excellent video! Do you have a source for the plastic cold shoe mount adapter with the metal leaf springs? I have searched eBay and the Internet several times to no avail. There are plenty of aluminum SmallRig and Neewer adapters but they do not appear to have the metal leaf springs.
I have amazon product links you can click on in the description section below the video. If you want to use any filter you need to expoxy on the step up ring first.
Hello, again my friend. Well, that is very clever. I see that you have been busy since last time when I mentioned that you should do a video that shows how you modified the CX405 lens so that you can attach lens filters over the lens. Still, don't forget my last request. How to use a cell phone or any other external mic system record and edit your sound rather than the on camera mic.
Is the UV lens protector water resistant? I thought I heard you mention that....I am using your affiliate links so I hope they still offer you commission. Tjis is the easiest to understand video, offering us new again beginners going back to camcorders a big help in the right direction. Thank you.
Any filter over the front of the lens will certainly add water resistance but I would not call it waterproof exactly. It's a lot better than not having one installed. Thank You for the kind comment.
Hello again. I bought the step-up ring from the link and apparently it's the wrong size? Also the UV lens which works with the ring, but not the camera? I just wanted you to know in case the links need to be changed. I also got the light. Can you please tell me what that piece is that you attached to the top? I presume that is to attach the light? Sorry for all rhe questions, you're the most helpful.
Ok out of the blue and if you see this ... and I know you can't speak to this for every HDR handycam ... so .... are there threads on the HDRs that allow an adapter and or lenses to be added on .. IE wide angle or telephoto thanks
My brother, please help a friend out. I got this camera, it was for livestreaming, capturing image form the hmdi output. The quality I get is really really bad, its anusable, worse them a surveillance camera. Is this how it supposed to work, I did a factory reset, set to 1080p but it is still awefull. Its good when i record and play back. The HMDI output, is supossed to give a good image quality?
I just purchased another one for $229.00 in Sept 24, 2024. You need to shop around at various sellers as I think Sony may have just recently discontinued the model. The information in my videos is accurate at the time I post the video. If you are watching the video months after it was posted then yes there can be market changes.
@@productreviewstv812 hear you Have Nikon coolpix p510 a 42x telephoto with stabilation 1080p 30fps video so at least as good as 405 Would have bought at $225. $75 more pass
What I like best about it is you can edit what you record in the camera which come in handy for me because I record over 10+ hours every day and edit the best clips down to 5 mintues and than put it in my PC to make the video, it takes hours to do but I LOVE IT@@productreviewstv812

@@Soreeyezzz This is true, however, I was trying to keep things as compact as possible with this tiny camcorder.
Whatever works for you. 🤗
Sharp little movie! Worthwhile watching. The mystery of the battery compartment is solved. Good stuff on the lens ring and the shoe too.
Thanks for watching.
I was waiting for Mr. Rogers to come out and change his shoes. Love the music.
I find it better than some of the loud, obnoxious stuff I hear in some videos.😃

*I just got word from a Sony employee that the HDR-CX405 is now discontinued so you guys better get one before the prices go nuts.*

Could you theoretically attach a different lens onto the step up ring ? like a fisheye perhaps .
I'm not aware of a lens that uses a filter mount.

Pretty genius hacks to be honest, I just might do the same with my cx405.
Thank You for watching and your commentary. Feel free to return and let everyone know if you do any of them.
I know the editing software is included. Have you tested it, is it good? Is the cropping possible?
I have never used the editing on the camera as I use Clipchamp which is included with the Latest Microsoft operating system.

There are a multitude of 'wrist lanyards" available on Amazon.
Can the recording (zoom/start/stop) of this camera be controlled by an app on smartphone (android)?
No, it cannot because this particular camera does not have Wi-Fi or NFC
I was curious is having the lens filter caused any glares in the footage since the filter has some space between the lens and filter.
I haven't noticed any yet but I'm sure as with most cameras if you get into specific lighting situations it could happen.
Did you that same camera to film this video?? If not, what camera did you use?
No, I only have one of these camcorders. For this video I used a Canon M50 first version.
Where can I get the filter on line
