How bout you make an app of the lyric canvas? Like there’ll be a canvas per song, and we’ll be able to input stuff on the boxes and attach an audio file on each canvas. That’ll be really helpful. And really awesome. Hope you notice this. Thanks :)
This is the best educational music video I've ever seen! I watch a lot of lyric and song writing videos, but this one is still my favorite after all these years. Thank you for your hard work! I really appreciate how you represented it in a simple, visual way.
OH MY GOSH THANK YOU SO MUCH I have been songwriting for years and years and I NEVER REALIZED I did some of the things in your lyric canvas video - I also think it's so important that you don't get lost with what your song means and get off track - this canvas helps to make sure you stick to your point and carry out your message. Artists need to suscribe to your channel , tbh
I Love the canvas! It also looks like you spent some time on Video Editing. It looks great and very "Professional" I think this will help to increase awareness of Holistic Songwriting. I would use this style again on future videos maybe, with different backgrounds but the "solid background" helps people stay focused on what you are saying instead of looking around the room. What you are saying is way too important for someone to miss because they like the furniture in that room! Great Job!
This is my third time this year searching for songwriting videos and ending up in one of your videos. I only realize it by the time I try to hit the already greyed-out subscribe button.
I gotta say, you did an incredible job of laying down concepts I've been applying to writing lyrics for years that I never quite put my finger on. Now I've much clearer picture of what "works". Awesome video!
My problem when I write is being too direct with lyrics. I can’t seem to write in a more transparent way that leaves some room for imagination with listeners...
Yeah, I am like that as well. So mix it up with imagery language. Let’s say I want to write about a breakup. So everything i’ve written is pretty literal: I loved you, I gave you every ounce of me, you ghosted me, you broke my heart, what an ass. Imagine it in nice poetic language. So that’s ok but very literal. Now we have to add the “scenery of the lines/of the song”. Scenery is always visual or sensorial. So like: wind whipping my hair, no helmet on, if I crank the throttle any higher I’ll spin straight out of the road. All of a sudden our broken love is now “like” an out of control motorcycle; a situation for each person to imagine (which gives gig much fodder for non-direct lyrics). So for every direct lyrical part write also a sensorial situational moment. Just like I did in a few quick non-worked lines. And then when you find the visuals/sensory ideas you like work on the actual words and rhyme structure. It’s good if you have experienced the image you are trying to evoque. Maybe the love is not an exiting one, maybe they break up with you in the corner of Lafayette by the Corner Bistrot. So your imagery has to come from that scene. The pavement, the tourists, the rain or the honk of the cab 🚕 that wakes you up from seeing your ex love on the other side of the street. It’s not him, it never is. So that imagery now gives us a completely different flavor of the same situation. And it’s related through visual and sensorial language and situations rather than the exact literal feelings and thoughts. Then finally from all you have (direct and sensorial) choose the best and you’ll have a mixture of direct and imaginative that will be really nice 🍀
You've resumed in a single sheet of paper my process to writing song lyrics. And it works everytime. Though, I'm very glad I found this as it really allows to have another perspective on it. It's a very well explained approach I'll bring to my students! Thanks so much for this!
Everytime I watch one of your videos I feel so pumped I need to write on the spot, that's exactly how good you are at inspiring people. Please never stop :)
Got to 2:05 into this video... and BOOM... there the idea! Thank you SOOOOO friggin' much for your time and effort to post these video's online! A lot of work has gone in to these.. really appreciated!
I just start off with an image in my head and write around what I see as the scene progresses. The number one rule is no erasing what I've written no matter how bad or how corny it sounds. Basically like an outline and rough draft from school.
Not a terrible idea if you're trying to brainstorm to come up with material, or hit a block, but usually a song writes itself when you simplify everything and utilize what is already there, just record everything and chances are you have more than enough material
I usually use other methods to write lyrics, but it's good to change things up from time to time. So yeah, gonna try this approach and see how it goes. Great presentation! cheers- Pat
Awesome songwriting ideas yet again! I can't fully convey how much these videos have helped me move my music forward. Almost done with the Bridge I've been stuck on, then starting a new song tonight I hope - maybe I will try this Canvas out!
great video! i want to see the part you cut out when you were thinking of the first line for the verse :) would be interesting to see your thought process! great lyric, by the way, paints a vivid picture
This is such a helpful tool! Thank you so much! Please keep creating more awesome songwriting content like this, I love your "How ... Writes A Melody", those videos honestly blew my mind, particularly the Ed Sheeran and Twenty One Pilots videos, it's crazy how their choice of intervals / melodic structures reflect their image. Mind-blowing stuff that I've never considered before! Once again, please keep creating this awesome content. You've got a new hardcore follower on your channel now :)
My problem is having like a 'log jam' of ideas, there are lots waiting to come out and I just need something to kick off the flow! This looks amazing, thanks so much!
Throwing together brainstormed clichés into song form isn't what I call good lyrical practice, but if your happy with the result that is all that matters I guess. I do the exact opposite. I work from the ideas back to the title and root out clichés every time they appear. Trust your inner voice and your topics will appear from within the lyrics themselves with the added benefit of a greater chance of a novel and original work
Great idea but I'm going create my own version, cus I can put different concepts on each canvas, I have a pad at home, but I think this is a cool way to learn how to structure and bring out ideas at the same time, 🙂👍
Hi Friedemann! I tend to trust your experience. I have a songwriting problem, that, I believe, other people might have too. The problem is that I feel like I have to say about to this world. That's why I'm m stuck writing a song. On the other hand, there plenty of songs that touch me deep. It makes me suspect that I actually have something deep inside me as well and just need to find a way to "unpack" it. Do you have a video related to this problem?

Very nice video editing and conception Friedemann, you nailed on the the progression idea! Can I translate it to portuguese? (I will credit you). I have a channel about songwriting as well (Hi from Brazil ; ). As a suggestion, maybe adding some flavor of BPMs can help the songwriter to set the mood. Lower BPMs, can give a state of intimacy (like R&B songs), and higher BPMs can provide more good vibes/good time. In your "Music Electric" example, 112 BPM and higher could be a great start in order to help to unblock the creativity. Keep up the good work!
Hey Thiago! Thanks for the nice comment. :) I'm sure we could work something out for a translation, thanks for asking and not just stealing the video! I really appreciate that. Wanna PM me what you were thinking about exactly?
