The line that Grandma said towards the end it was drove home that this felt like a gay metaphor even though that wasn’t the creators intention. “ Some people, they will never accept him. But some will. “
There's so many little moments like this. Leaving the ocean plays just like coming out, 'the deep' is like every correctional facility or attempt at sexuality conversion a non-straight person has ever heard of, Giulia is the embodiment of every cool ally, and as you say that line near the end - it doesn't sugar-coat the difficult reality ahead but offers bittersweet consolation that there is definitely acceptance out there. Intentional or not, it reads this way wonderfully.
The whole movie is a metaphor not only for gay people but any group of people who felt that way. Sea monsters themselves are a metaphor. Enrico Casarosa (director) and Andrea Warren (producer) said so in an interview. It was 100% their intention.
A small detail: Bruno might have been Albertos Dads name, thats why he doesnt listen to his dads voice, telling him not to do stuff, since he left him :)
Also, u r not the only person who read the relationship as romantic coded. The director has said he wanted it to be completely platonic between all of them, just a child adventure before the complications of girlfriends and boyfriends. That said, he was totally ok with ppl interpreting it that way as well. And since the movie is about acceptance, it would make sense that ppl could especially connect to it. Especially with the pair of women also coming out as sea monsters as well at the end lol
Someone figured out that Gulias school is only about an hours train ride away. So if you're sad about the ending, you now have proof that they'll visit every chance they get. Naysayers, shut up. Let us have this.
If you watch all of the credits, there are pictures that show them writing letters to each other, phoning each other. Gulias dad visiting Lucas parents in the ocean. So cute, I dont know if many people know those are there
I just want to cuddle with Nick and comfort him when I see him crying. Luca isn’t one of my favorite Pixar flicks. But it’s definitely one of the most emotionally affecting.

Even if Luca and Alberto weren't intended to have romantic feelings for each other, if the fans interpret that they did, i don't see any harm in it. It's a beautiful friendship or relationship regardless and i think we could all take notes. Also, the two elderly fish-women lived together so try disputing that relationship! 😉
@@jaylahmichelle they are literally teenagers. Also, your homophobia is clearly showing because you would not be saying that about a boy and a girl. Nobody has ever had a problems with kids as young as 5 being in love but as soon as it’s two boys, who are older, y’all start freaking out. Also, kids can know they are gay at any age just like people know they are straight. I’ve literally known I was bi since I was six and fell in love with my best friend (were both girls) when I was 10. Stop with the “they’re too young” bullshit
@@jaylahmichelle I’m just a year older than Alberto and I already know what I am and I’m definitely not straight. It’s weird that y’all’s only argument is “they’re kids” like that changes anything.
I just love this movie for what it was, it might not be as complex as other pixar films but i love it for its simplicity and innocence. This movie brings out the joys of childhood, those days we spent with out childhood friends and there's no worry in the world. Its a really beautiful film. The best animated film of 2021
This also hits close to home with me because my family is Italian and this is the first full Italian Pixar Disney movie we've planed to watch it and my dad was all ecstatic and excited we even rewatched some of it in the original Italian.
Haven’t commented in a while but just want to say how much I appreciate you doing these long videos. Makes it so much more immersive even if you have to mute and blur it. Anyway thanks for making these videos so entertaining😍
I think credit drawing suggest that Alberto got actually adopted by Gulia's dad. In a way Alberto got his happy ending. Luca and Gulia will still visit any time they can or at least each summer. Alberto will finally get over his father problem thanks to Gulia's dad. Gulia seems to come from divorced marriage. We can also say Gulia's dad got his happy ending. I think in a way he is hurting from seeing Gulia just during summer. In a way he still wanted to be a dad for longer time. Now he has Alberto as his son. Maybe he sensed that Alberto has a need for parental care so he cared about him more than even for Luca. Also his fishing work will turn better thanks to Alberto. So overal it's kinda bitter sweet ending but I like to believe that they keep in touch and visit more often and Luca and Alberto's friendship grows stronger or even turn into something more when they grow older or after school. It would be nice if they would make Luca 2.
Luca is so heart-warming, straightforward, and so easy to watch. There's definitely no need for most of us to over analyze everything. It just plays out the way it should. Luca, Alberto, and Giulia are the golden trinity. Like there's nothing that could ever break their friendship/bond apart, and to me that's especially wholesome since we don't get to see that being executed that much in animated films these days. Anyway, great reaction Nic! I'm glad you liked it. Can't wait for more reactions to come through.
This is probably my favorite Pixar movie since Coco. The animation is some of the most beautiful Pixar has produced! Kung Fu Panda is a great movie as well, I recommend it if you haven't seen it yet. Great video as always, I look forward to seeing more!
Luca is voiced by Jacob Tremblay as a sea monster boy who appears human when he goes out into the outside world. His parents are voiced by Maya Rudolph and Jim Gaffigan
Hi! I wanted to recommend you to watch a movie called "Ponyo" is a beautiful movie of the same studio as "Spirited Away" and its a little bit simillar as "Luca" (with like humans and persons from the sea)
12:50- I feel it is worth noting that the director has stated that he had no intention of Alberto and Luca being seen as anything more than just friends, but he's perfectly fine with people interpreting it differently.
To the homophobes in the comments who've decided to try deriding anyone who reads the film as gay-coded, just get over it. The Lion King is effectively an interpretation of biblical stories, and Shakespeare's Hamlet. Shakespeare was inspired by writers from all over, from Montaigne and Chaucer, to Greek philosophers from millennia earlier. The point of this? That all forms of media, written/played/sung/performed/filmed/etc., are interpretations. As such, all media is always open to interpretation. So no matter how long you sit there, waxing lyrical about what is canonical, or what the author or director of a particular piece of work has endorsed, neither you nor they can stop interpretation - it underpins all creative work. Incidentally the creator of Luca gets this. Whilst there was nothing in his interpretation of the story he's told that was intended to be read as gay, he accepts that this is an entirely welcome reading of his work - because that's what fiction does. It interprets, and it inspires. It is surely only a good thing that people are able to relate to a film or associate with its themes, especially if those people are typically poorly or under-represented. It makes absolutely no difference to anyone else if someone has interpreted the film in such a way. PS Fantastic reaction btw, I love to see someone who notices everything from character beats, to the score and the animation - that's proper immersion in film
The director LITTERLY said they were straight plus y do u always have to make everything lgbtq related can two kids not have a close friendship anymore
@@fusion2480 he didn’t, actually. He said he INTENDED for their relationship to be platonic, but is open to and encourages all interpretations, including romantic coding.

Please tell me you watched the end credits! The drawings are so good. Also, you are not wrong, they definitely give romantic vibes. Fun fact: someone posted a drawing of Luca, Alberto and Giulia with the gay, bisexual and lesbian flag and the director of the movie liked that post
This is true. He also liked a picture of Luca and Alberto building a sandcastle and sticking mlm flags all over it. He also retweeted a doodle of the underdogs, with hearts between Luca and Alberto.
@@mrsfahrenheit Perhaps but he has officialy confirmed Luca isn't gay and until he says different that is how it is. He has however been open to other people's interpretation and has said he is fine with people interpreting it that way.

Your gasp when luca shouted "sea monster!" is so funny to me cause that's exactly how i reacted agsjshs Asides from that, i loved your reaction! Luca is such a sweet and comforting movie, I can't stop rewatching it. I end up crying everytime they get seperated at the train scene. And alberto's "go luca! go!" Makes me sob so hard :'((( It's so bittersweet. You can tell Alberto really cares for him and just ugh, pulls at the heartstrings.
I do believe the sea monters, not just Luca and Alberto, may be a metaphore for queer people... especially with the two older women "coming out" at the end of the race... ! Anyway, I love your reaction, thank you for that !
Love "everyone's been telling me this is my kind of movie." Totally agree thank you so much for doing this movie my family loved it . Thanks for all your reaction videos always enjoy them immensely.
Beautiful movie , the animation was so nice . I think they were insinuating the relationship which may play into the color choices when they are in the water🤷🏻♂️. Amazing reaction 🙌🏼💙
I think everyone can interpret what they want about their relationship. I like them to be "just friends" here (honestly, they are both still young, I don't need anything too romantic when it comes to kids) but I also like to imagine another movie of this one where they both are a little more grown up and kinda fall in love and stuff xDD aaaarrharrharr! 💙
Lucas's mom worried about hym, the guy saying they're disgusting and beating them, Luca judging Alberto for be brave enough to show himself to Giulia and then later he has the same courage, Alberto's father abandons him, the old ladies couple coming out... so many plots that a gay person can identify.. 🌈🌈🌈 #LoveIsLove
I absolutely loved this movie, i saw so many ppl saying it was bad because it wasn't as great or "deep" as Coco or Soul, but honestly i think that's amazing, it's such a pure, innocent and fun movie, and the best thing about it: you can interpret it however you want. As a queer person this movie meant a lot to me, i saw this as a metaphor for queer ppl, especially these scenes: -When Alberto tells Luca he can't go to school and they'll see his "fish face": To me this remembered me of how i was afraid to show my true queer self at school. -When Ercole calls them "monsters" and says ppl are disgusted by them: Alberto and Luca revealing themselves is like a queer person coming out (or a queer couple), some ppl will be "disgusted" by you, but some ppl will actually see you as who you really are without judging you, just like Giulia's dad did. -The two old ladies revealing themselves (this doesn't need an explanation) -"Some people, they'll never accept him, but some will and he seems to know how to find the good ones": This also doesn't really need an explanation, but it was super inspirational to me and made me cry a lot. Anyway, this movie is just beautiful.
Here's one more detail to confirm the gay/BL metaphor in the film: The song playing over the end credits is " Città vuota" by Mina. The lyrics are about two lovers who long to see each other again... "Don't you feel that our love is not over yet? / Come back to me, my love, / And the city will not be empty any more." This is what they chose to play over the ending, the final impression! Everything is implicitly stated, but the relationship between the two is as crystal clear as the beautiful animation of the sapphire blue water in the film.
By the way, I really enjoyed your Prince Of Egypt and Joseph: King Of Dreams reactions. I think you respected those two movies really well and I'm religious and both of those movies are my No.1 favourite animated movies of all time. Keep it up with the content.

I think I know the exact scene you’re talking about, I was traumatized by it, too. I was 11 years old when I first watched it but it’s still my fav movie of all time. I still think about that scene, sometimes too… 🥲
Agreed, and honestly you KNOW Disney going to say "THIS IS GAY" or they'll lose money they're a company first, also the director argument yeah I'm not one to say anything about it but seems a little silly, if I were a director and I made a queer-coded film for a company that has trade deals for homophobic countries like China I would keep my mouth shut, because I would be concerned about the movie not being sold because the company stopped selling it and I'd want to keep that type of movie for the community I made it for, but you never know. 🤷🏻♀️ also there's the issue with people assuming they're too young bish please like you don't ask kindergartens if they have a bf I remember being asked if I had a bf yet extremely young I hated it and then there's the ideal that homosexuality is just a sexual thing which is also wrong, also their monster forms look a WHOLE lot like the MLM flag just saying. There's also the song choices the themes there's a LOT but its whatever, people will believe what they want and especially if they don't know much about the queer experience, that also can be a factor.

Awww, this was a perfect reaction! I was also in awe the first time I saw it, it was so beautifully animated and the story was just too pure. Platonic or romantic; the relationship between Luca and Alberto was one of the most authentic and honest ones in Disney/Pixar movies ever. I got the same undertones on the exact same parts as you, so I really don't think that was purely a coincidence. This movie just made me feel good & warm inside. Luca is the perfect main character, but Alberto is the one I relate to. I just love them both so much.
Loved your reaction, and this movie! I think that even if Luca and Alberto aren't gay (though I like to think they are because representation!), I still see this movie as a metaphor for coming out and acceptance, which makes it hit harder personally c: But whatever relationship they do have, platonic or romantic, I think we can all agree it's a beautiful one
I love this movie so much. I loved how simple the story was, and just a pure and wholesome adventure about childhood friendships during the summertime. Some people are criticizing it for being too simple but I don't feel like every Pixar movie has to be some complicated emotional journey.

I think the main reason why people get confused with the "love triangle" and "gay undertones" is that people are not used anymore to see actual platonic love in friendship. US shows and movies go a great lenght to highlight the differences between friendship and love although when you actually dive down deep into your own feelings you might realize that the love for your partner, for your firends, or for your family are not so different after all. I really enjoy that the message about acceptance ends up rather generalistic where other movies try to expand their scope with examples which only ends up limiting the interpretation to the examples.
This movie was so good. My nephew watches it non stop, it is such a great summer film. I think it's kinda funny the antagonist (cant really call him a bad guy) ercole reminds me of skinner from ratatouille.
This film was so emotional. And I definetly picked up on the gay undertones and I absolutely loved the reprisentation, even though Disney writers have denied it BUT it's just so obvious to me so I don't even care :) And the part when old lady couple coming out as sea monsters when they see that Luca and Alberto are accepted, to me at least, represents them coming out as gay when they see that the younger generation is accepted. This film just makes me warm and it's so beaufitul as well!
I’m gonna see this as a lgbt film because there’s hardly any sweet lgbt films out there, and none Disney/Pixar and as I’m Italian it just hits extra hard in my lesbian heart and if people are mad about me seeing it that way then tough shit
This is the first video I’ve seen from you, and this is such a heartwarming reaction! You have such a lovely genuine smile that you can really feel how much fun you’re having!
I'm so glad you acknowledged the gay undertones between Luca and Alberto. A LOT of the Luca fandom ship the two, including myself. They are so adorable. And there are so many hints because their chemistry is so strong that they totally could be more. Even the two character's voice actors ship them with Alberto's voice actor saying he sees them eventually falling for each other in their future. What the grandmother said at the end just seals it in my opinion.
Such a genuine reaction, so enjoyable to watch! Luca is by far one of my favorite Disney/Pixar films, I wish I could go back and watch it for the first time again.

Yess as a proud italian I hoped you'd see this!!! kisses form italy

Hell no
@@prepostgamer305 hell yeah
I absolutely loved this movie, i saw so many ppl saying it was bad because it wasn't as great or "deep" as Coco or Soul, but honestly i think that's amazing, it's such a pure, innocent and fun movie, and the best thing about it: you can interpret it however you want. As a queer person this movie meant a lot to me, i saw this as a metaphor for queer ppl, especially these scenes:
-When Alberto tells Luca he can't go to school and they'll see his "fish face": To me this remembered me of how i was afraid to show my true queer self at school.
-The two old ladies revealing themselves (this doesn't need an explanation)
-"Some people, they'll never accept him, but some will and he seems to know how to find the good ones": This also doesn't really need an explanation, but it was super inspirational to me and made me cry a lot.
Anyway, this movie is just beautiful.
Here's one more detail to confirm the gay/BL metaphor in the film: The song playing over the end credits is "
Città vuota" by Mina.

P.s if everything is gay now, wouldn't you be gay as well?
I think the main reason why people get confused with the "love triangle" and "gay undertones" is that people are not used anymore to see actual platonic love in friendship. US shows and movies go a great lenght to highlight the differences between friendship and love although when you actually dive down deep into your own feelings you might realize that the love for your partner, for your firends, or for your family are not so different after all.
I really enjoy that the message about acceptance ends up rather generalistic where other movies try to expand their scope with examples which only ends up limiting the interpretation to the examples.

Don't worry about us watching this movie 5 time a week. I have to watch it like 7 times everyday. Thanks my dear niece and nephew.
I ship Luca and Guilia, cause there was more romantic tension between them then with Alberto
Such a genuine reaction, so enjoyable to watch! Luca is by far one of my favorite Disney/Pixar films, I wish I could go back and watch it for the first time again.
