whenever I hear that thirds glissando I give up on life
+Niraj Suresh No need to give up on life. Simply practice for 8 hours nearly every single day of your life and you'll be able to do it too!
+CardFreak97 Glissandos hurt though... any tips on how to do them as smoothly as this?
+TheExarion they hurt. Don't do them often.
+TheExarion Only use your finger nail. For thirds, lock fingers 2 & 4 stiffly and angle those nails in the direction you want to go. For 6ths and octave glissandos, there really is no trick, just don't leave blood all over the keyboard. Or lick your pinky if it isn't your piano lol
Steef Good god haha, great explanation though
The reason this is amazing is because at the end he's playing the melody with two keys, right next to each other, at the same time. The interval between two keys is called "seconds". Kind of like thirds or fourths etc. So by plying the melody in intervals of two simultaneously he's effectively playing the "Minute Watlz" in SECONDS. GET IT??? He's awesome. So witty!
Greg Noblin Hahahahahahaha! That's awesome!
it is not funny when you explain the joke.
It’s more an intellectual joke.. musically-wise it doesn’t sound appealing
@@cme1447 It's supposed to sound kind of "wrong." That's part of what makes it funny; I would say it's more important than "seconds vs minutes" which is pretty artificial without this musical side of the joke.
Little Peperoni i do! i play piano, i develop games, have an amazing and happy family, i’m passionate about astrophysics and astronomy, and overall i’m just really happy in life. just because i don’t find things funny, and i am verbal about it, does not go to say that i have a bad life. in fact, it makes my life better when funny people like you try and make a point and fail lol :)
He plays it in 'seconds'
Clever
explain??
OlavHaraldsonDenHellige ! When he goes into the weird dissonances in the repetition of the first subject area he is playing in seconds
Yes, whoever made the title missed the point. "Minute" Waltz in "Seconds"
OlavHaraldsonDenHellige ! He's playqthe melody in the interval of minor second
@@niccolopaganini4268 Mainly major seconds, somtimes minor thirds (e.g. Eb + Gb at mm. 81).
LOL YES HAMELIN IS MY HERO!
Hamelin is awesome and makes it all look so easy, doesn't he :-)
Hamelin is amazing!
Oh, hey Kyle.
OK
I already respected and admired him a great deal but that just increased 1000%. See i love this. He's an AMAZING pianist and a serious artist BUT he has the most marvelous sense of humor and is so humble. What an awesome guy.
Indeed
So true!
HAHA. That snippet of "The Blue Danube" waltz in the left hand at 01:40 is hilarious. :)
+brian andrew leahy See a concert pianist can do this but when I used to insert snippets of other songs in I got shouted at by my piano teacher :/
F*** that. Jazz pianists do it constantly and i love it! We need to start having classical pianists improvise again. This was common practice in the Classical and Romantic periods but fell out of favor in the late 19th century. This is something i am very eager to explore! :)
Man, it would be amazing!
check my channel. I have probably 30 to 40 improvs all done on the spot. I call them "Free Rambles" as a sort of tribute to Percy Grainger. Some are pretty good, some are meh, but its still fun as hell to do. :)
Was listening to the Blue Danube and that's what made me come back to this video. Never made the connection before
Lol I think there’s some fantaisie impromptu action going on at 1:48 😂😂 Hamelin is hilarious and awesome. It’s also the deadpan expression he has when playing the second time around that really sells the humor.
He calls it his Minute Waltz in Seconds. Delightful.
damn he has the nicest flowing fingers of any of the greats out there today
He is a pianist without limitations. When you look at everything he has played and recorded, he's awesome, beyond belief!!
I'm playing this for my grade 8 this year. Imagine playing this version in the exam haha
Please do.
yes please we need an update xD
This version is a little too hard for someone playing grade 8 piano
His face during the first part is just fantastic. 'Gimme something harder this is waaaaay to easy'
Hamelin is the greatest example of piano virtuosity in contemporary times. The depth and feeling of Kempff, the technical prowess of Lisitsa, the precision of Parahia, and that "other" quality that nobody can put a finger on in words but sets him apart from even the other names I Liszted.
pfft... liszted
Lisitsa? You must be kidding.
@@jedrzejsteszewski6694I know right, lisitsa is subpar, hamelin is miles above her
@@jedrzejsteszewski6694 He's way better and in another league!
That glissando thirds is just insane. Much more insane was the octaves glissando he did in the cadenza of Hungarian Rhapsody No. 2. That haunted me my whole college life. lol
So insane this guy! Love him!
I love too the octaves glissando in the first Beethoven Piano concerto, in first movement
The first ever I guess !
yeah his cadenza is not about its musicality but its insanity due to the insane black keys glissando and a white key glissando on sixths. which actually skinned the finger of one of Rousseau's pianists (that one piano youtuber)
It actually completely depends on the piano. I can play them easily on Steinway Ds and well made keyboards, but most uprights have heavy, poorly regulated keys, requiring more force and therefore creating more friction and pain on your fingers. Octaves are only gonna be more difficult if you don’t have monstrous hands like Hamelin.
@@taiteyard3567 yup my broken 54 key piano though has a really tough spring mechanism that performing glissandos can hurt my fingers
One of my piano heros. I know that he wishes more attention was paid to his artistry. For me, I was spellbound by his artistry when I saw him live.
This third intervalls as a glissando.... wow, what a controll and amazing fingers .... love it
1:51
ARE YOU JOKING
BenGabbay that is glissando
Hovernyan Pianist but in thirds?! That shit is a finger destroyer
@@siddharthsalkar there are two finger glissandos in Ravel's Aborada del gracioso as well. If I remember correctly they go up and down and at varying speeds, a very nice effect.
No, he's the joke king.
@@siddharthsalkar Wait 'till you you see the octave glissando in the cadenza Hamelin wrote for Liszt's Hungarian Rhapsody no. 2!
His double note technique is very awesome, His power of 4th finger is incredible
I was there! He´s wonderful!
GENIUS! He is a GENIUS. Absolutely outstanding, incredible!
We are so fortunate to have copious audio (studio and live recordings) evidence to affirm that Hamelin is and will be the greatest piano virtuoso in the history of mankind.
I simply love it!
Big fan greg
Addicted, can't stop watching!
Interesting that he plays a C# instead of a C in the chord at 0:46, and again at 1:03, just like in Hofmann's interpretation.
you mean Db cause its in Db major
@@leo17921 dont matter C# IS D flat, but I know what you meant.
it gives it a happier tone because its not a tritone Gb and C its now Gb and Db in major
I like the Strauss chord progression at 1:39!
From where?
Isaac Magalhaes Pretty sure thats a motif from the Blue Danube Waltz.
Haha! Wonderful, very well plo, especially the last part: "Gaspard de la Minute!" One of the very best of MAH; wit and daredevil execution, bravo!
What a great sense of humor! Bravo!
Oh, my god....the "butchering the notes" part, made me laugh so hard...thank you so much...I loved it!
He’s also just a straight up genius composer. If he never touched a keyboard again he could instantly transition to being a top composer. If you ever get a chance to hear him perform his own works, or hear others perform them, take it. Anyone who likes this would probably love his etudes in minor keys or variations on a theme of Paganini as well.
AMAZING!!!! BRAVO!!!!
I wasn't prepared for his delicious prank ... I'm limp with laughter. He's an absolute delight!
Art Tatum of classical piano.
Perfect technique and harmonic skills)
I was frantically checking my windows tab for any other youtube that might accidentally play , what was that in the end !! lol !
1:20 Anyone else hear the tires squeal from that sudden out of nowhere hard left turn??? Amazing.
Amazing, beautiful performance…
Haha, awesome encore with a twist! Hamelin's a genius.
Is it allowed to do that to Chopin? He out-Godowskied Godowsky!
Do not mock the musical Gods! lol
The real ARTIST CAN do whatever he likes. Art is creation !
He did it to Paganini, too.
Chopin would have loved it!
I kinda like it
너무좋아
He and his song is so cute and lovely ~♡
that very last octave pinky jump is the hardest thing ever, idk how he nails that live every time.
1:20 bro let the intrusive thoughts win
Marc-Andre Hamelin is GENIUS !!!
I bet many in the audience thought, "Oh, Hamelin isn't that great - he's making all these mistakes in an easy Chopin"
Super talented man! After I heard many of his epic works, I'm trying to hear very easy piece for him. I just doubt that it will be super boring. And that was not easy at the recapitulation. OMFG!
Beautiful thing to the ear
I can't listen to this and not smile. How does he manage??
Incredible
Bwaaaahahahahahaha!!!!!!!!!! Great twist! Took me totally by surprise!
When I saw the title and saw his name in it I knew something was up
EXACTLY
Its a play on the double meaning of the word 'seconds'. The piece is called the 'minute' waltz, but Hamelin is playing it in 'seconds' (ie. the interval of a 2nd
We went to Temple U together - great Musician!
what a surprise at the end wow OMG!!
LEGEND.
Far out! I luvvit!!
That's some old-school cool right there. I imagine this sort of thing happening quite a bit in the late romantic era.
Hamelin has that same musical sense of humor one can also often hear in the music of Alkan and Liszt. A kind of "I'm gonna show off now, and I don't car if you know it". lol
What kind of humor even is that? Also liszt is objectively one of the worst composers of all time, he isn't worth mentioning.
@@ultimateconstructionbait used to be believable
@@some__random__guy I know he's baiting lol
A super virtuoso. Probably the best pianist alive today.
You're reaching... he's up there, but you have Zimmerman, Arcadi volodos, Yundi Li, Evengy Kissin etc etc etc... lots of people up there
아믈랭 피아니스트님 너무 내스타일야 ㅎㅎ히히 사람인지 의심하게되네
Hamelin é o melhor da história e não ligo para a opinião de quem discorda disso
Great interpretation!
Only Mr. Hamelin could get away with that ending. But it's perfect!
Is this man the best pianist alive? I'm convinced he is...
I agree
Lets not forget about Sokolov :)
So much virtuosity than he allows himself to slow down and PLAY the glorious melodies. His advanced technic allows him to focus on music. A rare thing. His interpretation over Scriabin's 2nd sonata is from another planet.
So true about Sokolov! after all, the important is the music - all the music elements (tempo, ritm, dynamics,...) are there to create the "music". Daniel Barenboim shows that making daring tempo changes to maximize expression. His interpretation on Beethoven's Eroica Symphony almost "stalls" the orchestra in 2nd movement (funeral march). You can't go deeper than that. :D That's the point.
Guilherme Schmidt 1:51 Yes, yes he is.
Tremendo!!!. Lejos, el mejor pianista y concertista del mundo.
This is proof that Hamelin is also a comedian.
Go listen to his performance of Gimpel's paraphrase of Soldiers At Sea (not the Stockholm one).
Genius!
Wonderful!
I can't help but laugh at 1:39 every time. Brilliant!
Very good
real badass lol! love it though
A nice musical joke. Brilliant playing.
After hearing this I wrote, just for amusement, a version of the Minute Waltz in 4/4 time. You can find it if you type the phrase 'chopin plus one' into the youtube search box.
Hahaha amazing!! Make me smile
He’s a genius!
Everyone's talking about Valentina's performance but god this is out of this world
1:20 its like what the heck!!!SOOOOO GREAT!!!
Exquise bravoure ...j' adore
Even not getting the "Minute Waltz in seconds" trick before reading the comments, I couldn't expect this to be anything else but an excellent joke.
Hamelin has a great sense of humor, and his audience too. It's a great moment of fun.
The real ARTIST CAN do whatever he likes. Art is creation !
Some of the first notated glissandos in thirds during 1800 were written to be played with the second and fourth finger, some find it easier to play it with the third finger and thumb though
Totally awesome! This is the way 19th century keyboard giants used to play.
Amen! I wish more pianists would bring this kind of playing back
I have nothing to say but.....WOW!!!!!
his heart probably pounded faster than any of my friendships lasted
Now a Seconds Waltz.👏
Ends Up Sounding Like An Emerson, Lake & Palmer Tune..!
His fingers are moving so smoothly as if you're cutting through a butter!!
This piece is done with such care. To some, it sounds off, wrong even. But to the ones who know, it’s perfect. Another piece in Hamelin’s set
WHAT THE !!!!
awesome ^^
It's really outstanding... and I can't stop laughing!
