I could tell you were a teacher. You're very well spoken. You know how to break down each slide and explain it in a way where its universal to understand. Anybody can learn. Thank you for these videos.
Thank you so much for not using some aggravating fast paced music in the background like some other youtubers describing decks or methods of play. It’s counter intuitive and annoying. Now I can focus on learning!
The One Piece Card game looks interesting, so I went ahead and bought 3 starter decks, 1 booster box, and a playmat and storage box set last night. I am new to the game and looking forward to playing my first game. This video is incredibly helpful.
Thank you so much for creating this video. I’m new to One Piece and this was the perfect introduction to deck building for this game, which was what I was looking for. Great production and very well presented.
Just did a trip to Japan and found and loved the game. Heading back down under not looking forward to english card prices. Love your content, subbed and going through the playlists. Great work man.
What a wonderful, and timely, video. Looking into OP from a Digimon player perspective, I was intimidated by deck building as you lack the inherit structure of levels. The 12-10-8-6 ratio of digimon was such a guiding force when I started that game that I found myself craving similar scaffolding. This was just so clear and insightful and helped me fill out the skeleton for my first deck. As an aside, it is really encouraging to see a fellow teacher creating TCG content!
Subbed. Started collecting a few weeks ago with OP-04 and now I wanna get into playing as well. Your videos help to understand the nuances of each color and potential combinations, which helps to find the right choice for myself.
Thanks for this deck building template. This will definitely help me as I’m just now get my card pool to a point where I can start building my own decks 👍🏼
“If you see what I’m saying “ sorry VV, I can’t see spoken words lol 😂 love the channel and the theory craft/ educational content. I’m a nerd and love to dissect the minutia of card games. Keep it up!
WHat I really like about this video, is that you use Meta Lists to explain what changed, and why things can be considered that or that, depending on playstyle. Its the stuff you cant see as a netdecker. AS experience grows one can fidn it out, but I also met some netdeck players ( in other TCGs ), that don't even know WHY their deck is Meta atm.
New player for one piece, 30 year player of TCGs... really enjoyed these and it's an interesting take on deck building. One day I think for me it'd be fun to sit down and see what this looks like in other games.
I've got another take you might find interesting coming out in todays video where I will be going over a 7 part series on how to improve your game. It is geared towards OPTCG, but it definitely has a universal tone to it that spans others games as well.
5 by 10 method and the cost curve have been really helpful in upgrading some of the precons I’ve picked up. It’s an interesting amalgamation of concepts that resembles mtg, dmcg, and dragon ball super in a way.
Great video, I'm starting in the world of TCG now, so this helped me understand a lot more about the game and specially what I was doing wrong in building my deck. Thank you very much! 😁
Awesome guide! Building a blue deck right now. I have question what would a character like Blue 4 Pudding be considered? I think atk is to low to be a bruiser but cost is to hight to be utility.
Good question, so some cards are very Hybrid in that way where they can be either/or, like 3c Brook, 3c Zorojuro, and even 5c Shirahoshi. Personally I would still consider all of them Utility with varying degrees of additional or potential upside. It's the same idea with the 1c and 2c searchers, they get the job done On Play, then any more value I can squeeze out of them after that is generating pure advantage.
this was really informative!! could i ask how you would go around building an uta deck? i recently got the starter deck and ive been told that ill need 4 film red namis to complete the deck (as well as a secondary uta st so thats easier to get atm)
If you do another video at any point, i think it would be nice for beginners to go over playing on curve - why do we want to (power level per don spent on one card, card advantage/disadvantage if you are only playing 1 vs many cards a turn) and also how that may effect you card ratios in relation to deck building
Maybe out of scope for what you want for this video but: how do you identify cards that are helping you towards your win condition vs win more cards? Any examples you have would also be great
That's a very good question, but hard to answer specifically, it will largely depend on what kind of deck you are going for, the colors, and the Leader. The best example I can give is really just posing a question: "Are you happy to see this card in your hand at any point in the game, knowing that when it goes down this match could either A.) Swing in my favor, or B.) Keep me in the driver seat." Then what differentiates it from a card that is more along the lines of "win-more" would be something along the lines of, "Does this card actually help me close out this game? Or was I already doing that before I used it?"
Just started getting into one piece and it look very fun. Thank you for the detailed video. I'm trying to make a Yamato yellow deck how would I find up to date cards to use to make the deck competitive and which cards are banned? Thanks :) ( I bought 2 ST-09)
I would say hop on the Discord to talk it over with some of the people on there (myself included). That might be the 2nd or 3rd most under-represented Leader in the entire game right now. And that's out of the 70+ Leaders that exist lol. I like a good challenge though. One more thing I'll say is that there is a Green/Yellow Yamato from OP06 that is actually very competitive.
Ive been going back forth between this and fhe advanced guide fpr refrence and i think there isna layer in this video you can differentiate decks as low to the geound mid range and big bosses and they can all play aggro control or a versatile style of being able to so both like white beard.
Yes, these videos are just meant to act as a starting point for deck building. There is way more to it that requires some playtesting, some direction you want to take the deck, and then personal player preferences and etc. Great observation, you're definitely on the right track
Really good tutorial! It would be nice if you could apply it on X leader and to see your through process on how you choose one card or another!, thanks again !
Your video was very insightful and helped me think outside of box (more inside of a box as in the 5x10 method). I would just like to ask what you use for the deck images?
Hey, sorry I missed your comment, I'm usually pretty good at responding to comments much faster. So I use MS Paint and Paint 3D for my Slideshows and Thumbnails if that is what you are talking about. Nothing fancy lol :]
That's how I got into TCG magic was my first cause I have dyslexia and was in a reading class I'd say 7th grade never forgot that teach mr Keith he would take out his magic cards and we would play and had to read the effect of card whenever played
As new player that is trying to build black decks without having invested 250$ in Borsalinos and Kuzans, how should i approach my deck building? Is there any alternative other then these navy staples to make decent decks with this colour (exept Rebecca) ?
So I think the Borsalino's are going to be core to Black decks for quite some time. However, in the meantime I think you can just run something like Sabo and 4c Rebecca in the place of Bors and Kuzan. However, it really is hard to replace Borsalino. I've seen quite a few decks run and not worry about Kuzan, but not so much Borsalino.
Nice video! Can you make a video on how to progress during the game (curve)? I have tried few variations of meta Katakuri and I keep losing online on the sim, no matter against which deck I go. Thanks!
I would just group and start every deck with 2ks and event counter (12-16 cards) Then the rest of your deck should just be labeled as the 'engine of the deck'.. i think the best way of making a deck in optcg is to separate them regarding your don curve So what/ how cards are viable to play on your first turn, then your second, etc I think thats why some decks are really strong going first but suck ass going second, vice versa With your deck list example, i think instead of explaining it as utility/ bruiser/ boss , its better to explain it as the 1/2 don play, 3/4 don play, 5/6 don play, 7/8 don play, 9/10 don play
Hi, Nice video and I'm starting to play OP and it was a very educational video. I just have one question: I don't find the videos from William Krack, can you put is llink here pls? Or the name of his channel, the more videos for me to learn to play the better Thank you for this video
Really great explanation as I have zero clue as to what's going on when I see people online playing and I am thinking of trying the game. How expensive are the decks? (Paper versions) I thought this was played online via a client. There are no card game stores in my country.
So the online version (called OPTCGSim) is completely free. The average deck in the game costs just under $200 US. But there are some really cheap options under $100 US as well.
Doflamingo I have as follows (1st Place, Gen Con list from OP03): 2k: 8 (Kaya, Mihawk) Utility: 9 (Law, Perona, Dof) Bruisers: 22 (Teach, Kuma/Pac, Boa, Jinbe, Geck) Bosses: 4 (Mihawk) Events: 7 (Love, 3kW, Rain) It's a midrange/tempo deck, sacrificing almost all of its Bosses spots for more Bruisers.
So Aggro is short for aggressive and it usually denotes a deck that is meant to be very fast paced and aggressive in the early game, trying to win early on, typically establishing multiple smaller bodies a turn in the mid game to keep on the aggression. Presenting as many threats as possible is the name of the game. Midrange is a deck that tries to play the most efficient bodies it can on a curve. A curve being turn 1, play out a Character that is 1 Don, turn 2, play out a Character that is 3 Don, and then 5 Don, and then 7 Don, and so on. Typically a very balanced deck of early Characters, Mid game Characters, and Late game Characters. Control is a deck that is more interested in being able to answer threats that your Opponent plays and being more defensive, typically building up a wall of Blockers in the Early and Mid game so that it can thrive in the late game. The core of the Deck is built around being able to sustain in the late game from cards/leaders that can generate more value than the other 2 (midrange/aggro).
Each player has 10 Don. It is not actually in the main deck, but rather starts outside the game in it's own Resource Deck. The way Don works in this game is, the player who goes first gets 1 Don, then the player who goes second gets 2 Don, and each Player gets 2 Don for the rest of the game each turn until they reach 10. So typically speaking the player going first is on the "Odd" curve of 1, 3, 5, 7, 9, 10 and the player going second is on the "Even" curve of 2, 4, 6, 8, 10.
The first thing that I would do as a total beginner would be to: 1. Watch the game tutorial so that you know the mechanics: ua-cam.com/video/s8s7vSSb8Tk/v-deo.htmlsi=H1ALKlTPvgJRhiqw 2a. Familiarize yourself with some of the meta decks out there to help learn about the cards: onepiecetopdecks.com/deck-list/english-op-07-500-years-into-the-future-decks/ 3. Download the free Sim so that you can start to tinker with cards, read them and play with them etc before buying any cards you might not want: ua-cam.com/video/Jjsns41d-gc/v-deo.htmlsi=mtIUXh9sKTzMmhYz This is a good start to learning the game, don't be afraid to ask any questions. It's tough getting in to a new game because the mechanics might seem foreign and the card database might seem overwhelming, but if you take your time learning it and watching lots of content on it, this is a very easy game to learn and a lot of fun to play and master.
This is a very minor quibble, but as a beginner player who found this video while trying to learn more about deckbuliding, it was kind of confusing and annoying that, while listing example decks, you frequently changed both the order in which you discussed each class of card as well as the specific terms you used. Just as an example, you switched between "bruisers", "blockers", and even bizarrely "beaters" several times. It would have been nice if each deck was presented using the terms you introduced and the start of the video and presented in the same order.

What is aggro, control and midrange?
So Aggro is short for aggressive and it usually denotes a deck that is meant to be very fast paced and aggressive in the early game, trying to win early on, typically establishing multiple smaller bodies a turn in the mid game to keep on the aggression. Presenting as many threats as possible is the name of the game.
