I cant say enough about your breeding program Painted Desert Ranch sure has some realy nice babies with lots of color, I wish I lived closer so I could see them in life, but my age is creeping up and I dont train anymore, I really like your videos, Thank U for sharing, Navajos are some sure nuff Cowboys and Cowgirls, I ran barrels against some tuff ones in the early 80s Those Jackson girls were tuff on the barrels!!!!
Look at the hip on that 2nd bay! Momma they hurt my boody. Nice colt the boy was chasing down the lane. Love the grey. Wouldn’t mind having him. Sweet bay. Nice group of mares and babies. ❤️💋🐾🐾🐎🐂
Gosh you know I've been subscribed for a couple months now. Not even sure how your channel got recommended. I've loved horses all my life and grew up always loving the true old out west living was and you being Navajo WOW. Your family still living this amazing way just has me in awe with every video. You guys work so hard. And honestly to me you guys are living the American Dream.... In God's beautiful country! I did live on a couple ranches growing up but kept going back to the city life. So now I will continue my dream on your channel.
You have some beautiful foals . It's cool that you number them . I'll trade your dry heat for this humidity we have in nwa. It's so humid that a dehumidifier we have in A house we are working on filled a five
When I see a damn good horse that is good at their job and has a nice clean JHeart brand on it… the last thing on my mind is “ugly”. It’s ok for us all of us to have opinions.
What is the brand on their rear near the tail? Why is it added? These baby horses are muscular, healthy and well on the way to being easy with humans from previous handling. I love the kindness you lavish on them, teaching them trust and calming their fear. They are physically comforted before and during the branding and then brought back to their mothers. What could be a painful, terrifying ordeal is reduced to a forgettable brief sting. Their training is an integral part of their rearing from the start and works with their bloodlines to produce smart, gentle, reliable working horses. And they are all beautiful. No wonder these horses are sought all over the country. Respect to your family.
Nice video. Hope it rains on you. My local preacher said one time, ya'll here on Sunday morning praying for rain and, nobody has an umbrella or raincoat. Have you no faith?
You have some beautiful youngsters! I noticed you have a lot of the solids along with some roans and palominos. Do you have duns in your breeding program also?
Do these brands last the life of the horse? I've seen people leave the iron on the skin longer with cows. I have a horse that is/was branded. It seems to be fading.
It’s probably traumatizing for the horses when the herd gets broken up and the babies leave. I guess in the wild babies do leave and find other herds in the wild. Just makes me sad thinking they take the babies from the moms.
@@PaintedDesertRanch Aaaaaah clever. So many different ways to do it in the world :) Here in Norway we only chip the foals, not branding them. Thank you for sharing :)
Thanks I just started following your channel and don’t know everyone’s names. I’m a retired firefighter and run some cattle here in Texas. I also ride Quarter horses and compete in ranch sorting. Another interesting fact is we can run a pair here on 3-4 acres.
I haven’t really introduced everyone yet, not sure if I ever will or can do that all in one video. Lol. Nancy and Jerry PDR owners have 6 daughters and two sons, most have spouses and there are 23 grandkids & just about everyone comes out to help! Nancy, Jerry, Henson and I are the ones here full time though. 😁
I'm city girl wanna be country girl that LOVES your videos 😃 Question 1.. do you let your horse's rome free? I'm wondering why the branding. Question 2... do you keep all the horses that you brand? What do you use them for? The number 109... what is the significance of branding numbers? Just curious city girl questions 🤔🐎🐴🐎🐴🐃🐄🐃👵🙋🏇
Our horses roam free on a couple of sections in each pasture- a section=640 acres. No, we don’t keep them all, almost all are for sale. All foals get numbers, they help us identify the babies to the mamas. Thank you for your city girl questions- we are happy to help educate everyone who is genuinely curious about the #cowboyculture 💪🏼
@PaintedDesertRanch thank you very much for your response. I have a 2 month foal that i want to brand but I wasn't sure how young you could brand them. I'll have to check what size brand i have.
Probably a stupid city boy question; why do you brand foals that are likely going to be sold? Wouldn't the new owners want to claim them with their own brand (or not brand them at all perhaps)? The only thing I could think of was that maybe it's more of a "maker's mark" than a property tag. Thanks!
Good question actually! We brand every foal that leaves the ranch. We have been working on our breeding program for about 30 years... we are proud of our stock and hope those that buy from us are proud to own a #JHeart too 😁
#cowboyculture I guess. When you work a long hard day in the dirt and sun it just makes sense. We’re in the sun everyday for at least 10 hours a day in the summer. Nobody wants skin cancer 🤷🏻♀️
😂😂😂 someone told us we weren’t branding long enough; that the brand wouldn’t even show up a week after…. Dammed if you do, dammed if you don’t. It’s a cruel world out there! Thanks for watching 👍🏼👍🏼
a cowboy would know not to brand Foals at a young age. It going to look ugly when he get older it going to be a big mark on the horse. Learn from experience. 4 generation rancher here rocken J ranch.
In lots of videos when they are out gathering cattle you see them water them at the stock tanks. Remember we are seeing 20 minutes of a probably 10 hour day! You dont get such fat glossy horses by not feeding them!
I usually enjoy your vids, but WHY in God's name do you hot brand them?!? Do you realize how traumatic that is? Have you ever been branded? Freeze branding is so much less painful and traumatic.
Freeze branding is not painless. Some people that put a freeze brand on will drug the horse so they stand still because you have to hold the iron on longer for it to take. Put some dry ice on your skin it burns like fire.
I freeze brand 150 registered heifers a year. Anyone who says it is painless hasn’t done many. 1/2 second with hot iron at that age makes perfect brand on colts. Good video.
How do we get a hold of you trying to buy a foal?

We used to hold a blunt stick in that area. Take away the stick and replace with the branding iron. They barely even notice. Good job guys!
Such great looking horses...love the way the horses are raised...
For the little time you spend handling your foals, they are so gentle! You guys are breeding quality!❤️🤍💙
I think it says a lot too about the quality of bloodlines they are breeding and the minds they have. Love to have one of their foals one day!

Do all of your horses have numbers on their rear flank?
They all have numbers on their rear but not on their flank

Haha, we’ve been getting rain, I’m just behind on my videos 😉
That is a good one about faith.
Nice solid looking horses. How many acres do you need per horse, as that is sparse forage?
It’s 53 acres per cow/calf pair, a horse is half of that.
Happy National day of the Cowboy

Identifies them to their mama

Thumbs up.
What is the number on the hind leg for? Just curious
Identifies babies to mamas
Sorry if this is damn questions but why do brand your horses?
It’s Arizona state law. And it helps us identify our horses.
Oh thx so much love your videos♥️♥️♥️♥️♥️
Hello how early can you brand a foal and what size brand
As early as you want I guess… we brand them starting about 3 months old.
Our brand is 2”
@PaintedDesertRanch thank you very much for your response. I have a 2 month foal that i want to brand but I wasn't sure how young you could brand them. I'll have to check what size brand i have.
What are the numbers for on the rump?
They identify the babies to the mamas
What does the numbers on right cheek mean?
They all get numbers. Identifies them to their mama
Rain!! GTG🙏🙏
Yes!!
What does the numbers brand signify
They identify the babies to the mamas
On your butt brands? What do the numbers represent, and how do you choose the numbers?
Identifies the babies to the mamas, start at 100 and go up from there.
Why do you brand some on the side and others on the rear
They all get a JHeart and a number on the rear... we just don’t video every single one

Honest Question, why do you put your brand on a horse you are selling to someone else?
It’s Arizona State law
Why don’t people numb it before branding?
It would take longer to do that and lidocaine (standard numbing agent used in people) burns/hurts as much. Best to use the bandaid theory do it quick.
What symbols go by the tail?
Numbers to identify babies to mamas
you should brand each foal twice to inflict more pain!
😂😂😂 someone told us we weren’t branding long enough; that the brand wouldn’t even show up a week after…. Dammed if you do, dammed if you don’t. It’s a cruel world out there! Thanks for watching 👍🏼👍🏼
What the going prize for foal.
Start at 3k
Barbaric practices
If horses end up on the way to slaughter they can be identified and the original breeders contacted
Oh my god I can see that foals ribs is that natural for a foal or are u malnourishing those poor foals?
You’re funny
next time use freeze branding
Thanks but there are reasons we do it this way
Ok why do some babies more branding then others ? Angie-Ohio thx
They all get the same
They all get 4 a ranch brand on thier left rump and 3 numbers matching them to their mom on the right near thier tail.
Why do you brand numbers on their butts?
Matches them to thier mom
Deberían marcarlo de otra manera que no se les veas
It’s Arizona State law to brand livestock where you can see it from FAR AWAY
