  • This video is a compilation of clips of Class 31s in action on the main line, filmed between 1987 and 1991. These have been put together in (TOPS) Class number order, with a few duplicates and a couple of unidentified examples at the end.
    [All photos used in the opening sequence and the background music were taken/ written/ played by me.]

    They had a very distingtive rattley sound as did the class 33s good old engines good old days .

    Ahhh, toffee apples , was it just the 31/0s that had the power handle that the driver had to take with him when he changed ends .I was told that the power handle looked like a toffee apple so thats how they got their nickname , i was never sure that someone was pulling my leg or not. Does anyone know the truth and real fact on that . Thank you all .
