    I wonder how many locomotives, DMU's, EMU's and other rolling stock have been prematurely destroyed since the privatisation of the railways in Britain. Must be a huge loss of investment. Also the manufacturing capacity was lost, thousands of jobs lost and the railways no saddled up an awful lot of different rolling stock.

    I saw Collingwood one day as a young kid in Doncaster (Moat Hills crossing), around 83/84. It was the first 50 I'd ever seen and had BR large logo blue livery then. I think it had been in the Doncaster BREL works for refurbishment as 50s seemed to be rare up north, although you occasionally saw them parked up around Doncaster station awaiting maintenance. The next 50 I saw in Doncaster was 50008 Thunderer in October 2022.

      I suppose growing up in South London/ Surrey gave me an advantage of seeing locos from most regions at their London termini. But did go to Doncaster works in 1980 on a rail tour visit and saw quite a few 50s being refurbished. Locos were always nicely turned out by the works. Thanks for sharing your memories of 50 005, always good to hear anecdotes from that golden era! cheers Geoff. 👍😊

      Assume you are referring to Tangmere’s wheels locking? I’m guessing it wasn’t “OK”, but if I’m honest I’m not qualified to comment on whether it was a significant incident or not, certainly not to the point that it needed to be reported - to whom I’m not sure in any case. I wasn’t the only one observing/ filming that day, including station and railway staff, so would defer to someone with more knowledge as to whether this required reporting. I’ve no problem with my post being tagged as ‘evidence’ of what occurred, if anyone wants to take this further. 😊

Anyhow, as you can see in the video, Tangmere returned, supposedly unharmed, at its allotted time for the return leg and left as scheduled. Perhaps someone who was actually on the tour could shed some light on what happened?

    • @gibbo675
      @gibbo675 28 днів тому

      @@OldOakTrains Bullied Pacifics have an independent steam brake that once it is applied does not react to any variation of the train pipe pressures much in the same way that a straight air brake works on a diesel or electric locomotive. The steam brakes of the locomotive are however regulated via a vacuum proportionality system when running a vacuum fitted train and when running in air brake mode the vacuum system is servo controlled via an air vacuum proportionality valve however the independent brake handle must be released for this to work properly. As for flats it will have likely gone over the lathe at Carnforth although the tyres are thin ad it wont have done them any good for there will be localised heating in the area where the flats would have been worn into the tyres which could cause loose tyres or even a fractured tyre as worst case.

    When I was in Reading 79/81, I used to go and sit on an embankment near Theale late evening, pitch dark, with my flask and timetable and wait in anticipation. You could tell it was a 50 approaching from a good mile away, that distinctive sound - nothing else was quite like it. Then the fantastic suspense, louder and louder, then it would pound through with its rake, probably doing the ton on its way to Plymouth or Penzance. There was something about them.

    Fantastic! A regular haunt for me as a kid in the 80s!

    Great footage, I've been really enjoying this class 50 footage you're uploading. Did you manage to see 50007 and 049 on the tour up to Scotland yesterday?

    It’s a shame that loco 50025 got scrapped shortly after this incident

      Agree, but given the state of its bodywork ,and the age of the 50s at the time, it was perhaps, not surprising. Thanks for watching and commenting. 👍😊

    That accident happened exactly 8 years before I was even born I’m now hoping that everyone who was on that train hauled by a 50 loco are okay

      Thankfully , and perhaps unbelievably, there were no serious injuries from this derailment.

    Niine first class coffins in the first train, I wonder what that was, it didn't look like a special of any kind...

      Many thanks. Only went there once, wish I’d gone again now, but that’s hindsight for you. 🤷🏻‍♂️👍😊

    Loved these when visiting my grandmother's house in Upperby Carlisle in the early 70's. They rattled the windows as they powered southbound out of Carlisle past Upperby sheds especially when double headed. They disappeared overnight when the AC electrics replaced them in 74-75.

      Thanks for the comment. Great hearing anecdotes from the “golden age” of diesel loco haulage. 👍😊

      Ok, thanks. Don’t know how that passed me by at the time, but I suppose pre-internet it was easier to miss something 🤔
