The Amazing $115 Leather Stitching Machine In Use! - Making A Leather Sheath

  • In this video I make a simple leather sheath using the $115 leather sewing machine. I get a lot of questions about the sewing machine after posting my introduction video reviewing it 3 years ago. I use mine all the time, and its been great to have! These machines can be a little tricky to use, and simply using the wrong thickness in thread or needle can really kill the experience.

    I just figured out why this thing has two tensioner devices and two holes in the bobbin carrier: different weights of thread!
    Set up one tensioner for heavies, the other for fines.
    The pair of holes in the bobbin carrier closest to the little screw is for lighter thread, the hole-pair farthest from the screw is for heavies.
    Changing between known thread weights is a lot easier knowing this detail.

    You should start your stitch 3/4 of an inch into your stitch line and sew towards where you want the stitch to begin then turn 180 deg to start your 'backstitch" which will be going forward and locking your stitch. Hopefully that makes sense... You'll end up with only two stitches in the beginning holes instead of the 3 you are currently doing.

    Have you thought of adding a treadle instead of hand cranking so you have both hands free to control your worpiece?

    Awesome man. Can't wait to get into leather working some more. I've picked up a few things for leather. And some small leather pieces. Can't wait to make something like you made in this video well done Chris..

    Someone else said it below but a treadle seems like a great option-I’d love to see how to add that to one of these!

    Great project, both scissors and sheath. Bound to become a family heirloom. What kind of glue did you use for the leather as it seemed to be just right for it? Thanks for sharing. Stay safe and keep up the good work.

    I both love and hate this machine. I bought one a couple years ago, after watching your video on it. Like you, I prefer the hand crank method, but on my large stuff, I have to use two hands, so motor on those.

    Thanks for the video! I have been looking to buy one of these machines but one thing I'm not happy with is the mark the presser foot leaves on the leather. I would be using this on larger projects like purses and messenger bags where hand stitching is just taking me so much time.

      He was using to much pressure on the foot, plus the foot is a bit rough. You can file it and you could glue a piece of something under the foot, leather or vinyl.

    These machines are a real diamond in the rough. I liked mine so much, I immediately bought a second one to set up for commercial walking foot 135 class needles, and heavier thread. I can now use 138, and 207 thread.

    I have a similar electric motor. I changed the spring in the foot pedal. I shortened it and now is doesn't allow the motor to go into high speed.

    Thanks for the video. Help! I still can't get the bobbin thread to pull up. I sanded the whole bobbin shuttle down. I've watched several videos on how to thread the machine and bobbin. I finally figured that the bobbin thread goes behind the thread spring. Tried several tension options. The bobbin thread still won't pick up. If I hold the bobbin thread slightly then run a cycle through the machine, it brings thread on the other side of the needle. However, it still doesn't pick up the bobbin thread. Any ideas?

    Very nice. I just ordered my first cobbler. Question I have is. I noticed your walking foot is leaving little teeth like mark's on the leather both sides of the stitch. Is that fixable? Or is that the way it is?
    Thanks for all that you do.

    Still hard to believe U made a pair of scissors, a very complex task overall. And for something U can buy in fairly high quality. But it showed the power of the induction forge for small parts really well.

    Completely dry it out the rub in pure bees wax and use a hair dryer with heat to soak the wax in. That will preserve the leather for a nice long time. Same technique was used to preserve human skin for ancient mummies. Think about that.

    Does the machine always make those marks in the leather on either side of the stitch? I’d hate to tool something up and then it mark my work up like that.

    • @MakeEverything
      @MakeEverything  Рік тому

      Yes it does, it’s in my to do list to further soften the foot with some sandpaper. When I first got it the marks were very deep. If you sand it’s file down the teeth in the foot it’ll
      Make a big difference.

  • @spacecase0
    @spacecase0 2 роки тому

    You are lucky that yours only breaks the thread occasionally. Mine breaks thread 100% of the time. I suppose if I use fishing line for thread it works just fine, but that wasn't what I was planning on stitching on my leather with that

    • @MakeEverything
      @MakeEverything  2 роки тому

      Check your thread tension, your probably too tight on the bobbin or needle thread and it’s breaking. Also check where the thread feeds down, some of the edges can be sharp and rip the thread.

    • @spacecase0
      @spacecase0 2 роки тому

      @@MakeEverything I think the tension is accurate. I went through all of the timing on the machine to make sure that was accurate. It's breaking in the bobbin section. I think the edges might be sharp in there. Apparently those machines take a lot of polishing before they work well. And I gave up after about a month of working on it

    • @davefarnsworth3020
      @davefarnsworth3020 2 роки тому +1

      If your upper thread is breaking, timing may be off. Lower thread will be shredded if the holes in the bobbin shuttle have sharp edges. I had these problems at first but all good now that I deburred the thread path with a Dremel. It's a little bit of a learning curve but don't give up.
