    Personally, I'd make Sound be resisted by Psychic because one, meditation requires you to completely ignore and block any sounds that are coming towards you, and two, Psychic, while certainly not a bad type, isn't exactly a top tier pick like Water or Steel are. Still a good video, though!

    • @proclarushtaonasat
      @proclarushtaonasat 2 роки тому +35

      so true! In the scifi-show stargate, they even use a sound generator, to block the psychic powers of evil space priests by giving them migraines due to the exact same logic.
      Edit: I just reread the original comment, and realized, I got it completely backwards. Sound should be effective against psychic, but maybe moves like calm mind and meditation could lessen the effect of sound?

      I don't think sound should be resisted by psychic, because all of Pschic's weaknesses are stuff people are scared of- Bugs, the dark, and ghosts. A lot of people are scared of loud sounds, and sudden loud sounds are also the first thing people's brains drift to because that sound could give a warning that determines your life or death. While some Psychic types do meditate, it is tough to meditate when there are loud noises around. (I would know, I have experience.) and while with practice you can overcome it, it's still tough to drown out everything IMO.

      Actually the Sound>Psychic is reasonable, you can always try to meditate and reach a mental state to try and ignore sounds but things like Screech or Metal Sound (Both moves being loud ear-piercing screeches, let's not even get into Hyper Voice) are more than enough to knock someone out of the metal state and even make them unable to focus and think

    Wailmer and Wailord could make good sound types too, considering how Blue Whales can make 180 Decibal Calls underwater (which is as loud as a Jet Plane), and certain toothed Whales also use sound bursts to stun fish in the real world. A Water/Sound typing for Wailmer/Wailord would also make them even weaker to grass types, thus showing how a grass-type like Dhelmise can actively hunt Wailord.

    my issues with it are:
    1) I feel like 18 types is a perfectly even number to have. Unless they wanna give us 2 types again like in gen 2, bringing us to 20 types
    2) I know people say Bug type is terrible as well, but i feel like Ice type is the only one that needs heavy rebalancing (and GF has taken a small step towards that with changing freeze to frostbite in PLA), so they could just do that.
    3) All the good Special Normal Type movies would be gone; there'd only be Swift, Tri-Attack and Weather Ball (which are all gimmicky) and that messes with Pokemon that have the -ate ability that turns Normal moves into different type moves. ex. Sylveon and Gardevoir could no longer use Pixilate boosted Hyper Voice which would mess them up
    4) The fact that they already have Sound Based moves that aren't Normal typed
    This last part isnt an issue, but it'd be funny if sound type was a thing cause there's already the Soundproof ability, so those mons would probably gain viability being immune to Sound Types. Like the Levitate ability

    • @noodles24601

      Point 3 you have here is definitely my biggest concern with a hypothetical sound type. It just absolutely guts normal move availability unless they take some drastic steps to avoid that. Honestly if game freak wanted to add it I'd probably add a bunch of new special normal moves, then make the change to sound type for the others the gen after that. The others make sense though; metals can transport the sound of something hitting it, making the sound louder, and you could make the argument that the sound travelling underground, would mean travelling through a cave, like an echo. While I agree with most of what you said, I have rebuttals of my own.
    First, some of your examples of Pokemon that should be sound type already have fitting types, such as bronzong, whose psychic type comes from it's magic powers and Hakamo-o, whose sound come from it's war dances.
    Second, you said towards the argument that sound type is just normal type, that for now it is. However of the thirty-one sound based moves, only eighteen are normal type. I brought this up for two reasons: to point out how the argument makes no sense at all, and because several of these moves probably will never change type, specifically bug buzz, eerie spell, grass whistle and metal sound.
    Third, as already brought up, there are already numerous sound based moves, all with the same ability to ignore substitute. it's already a gimmick added onto moves to make them situationally better with the same theming.
    If they added a sound type, they'd have to change several things that I doubt they will. Not saying they won't, I just don't see it happening any time soon.

    I do like the idea of a new type trying to bring balance to the game.
    What bothers me is that sound based moves is already a thing. There is at the time of this comment 27 sound-based moves, almost the same amount as fairy type moves.
    It already have its own "gimmick" (bypassing substitutes), item and abilities (Soundproof,Liquid Voice,Punk Rock,Throat Spray).
    Which is quite unique for the franchise. Making it a new type is not that farfetched but I don't want it.
    Sound-based moves are not bound by any type, that's why I think they're interesting. By not putting them in a fixed type, it allows more flexibility I think, and I would like more of those sub categories.

      I don't think adding the Sound type has to confine any Sound-based moves to that type, since there are a lot of moves in Pokemon that could belong to a variety of different types (for example, the existence of the Fighting type doesn't require any punching move to be Fighting type). There are quite a few moves I think would definitely stay their original type even if the Sound type was added, like Bug Buzz, the "Clang" moves, Metal Sound, and Overdrive.

    The main reason I don't think sound typing makes sense is that it's *too metaphysical*. Regular types either constitute a pokemon's physical body (usually the case with Rock/Steel/Grass/etc.) OR constitute a pokemon's fighting style (Dark/Psychic/etc.) and sometimes both (Fairy/Water/Ghost/etc.)
    This doesn't make sense for sound typing, since sound isn't a physical thing, nor does it constitute a typical fighting style a pokemon could realistically use for both offense and defense. A pokemon can't be "made of sound" since sound can't exist without another physical medium, and can't use sound for defense, [though admittedly there's obvious potential for sound as an offensive tool] so sound can only be used for one half of a "fighting style".

      Hmng I disagree. Sound can actually damage things. If its loud enough it can make things vibrate items (like shattering glass) and damage eardrums. And even if “sound” itself is not physical, instruments are and that could be used to some good potential. Also there technically are sound based pokemon moves already, and even those moves will effect pokemon or even damage them.
      I would also argue that sound is a physical thing since it can interact with things. Like ghost type sound isn’t something you can reach out and touch- and shadow types are just shadows-however the Pokemon making noise themselves are solid (unless ghost type) so if a pokemon throws a punch other pokemkn can block it or dodge it, but if a pokemon sends out a piercing screech the other pokemon won’t be able to get away (unless they have some sort of strength against sound) because it will be like a shock wave. Even if a pokemon plugged its ears the noise would still definitely rattle them.

    For the choices of Sound-type Pokemon, you should exclude those that simply make references to sound techniques and consider if the type itself fits the theming of the Pokemon.
    Bronzong is a bell, but its a bell with mystical powers that calls for rain. Hence more psychic than Sound.
    Kommo-o uses his clanging scale dances and preview of the battle to come. He’s a… whats the word… ritualistic fighter?
    Exploud is good as a Sound type, but his large body and muscles should also make him a Normal type, so Normal/Sound is a more fitting type for him.
    Noivern is a great Sound/Dragon, but Swoobat is better known for abusing Stored Power, a Psychic move and using echolocation is a poor reason to make it sound-type, otherwise the blind zubat would be one too.
    A lesser known option for Sound-type could be the Toucannon line as they can change their vocals to over a hundred different cries (at least as a Trumbeak). It would also set it apart from the myriad Normal/Flying types.
    Meowstic line could debatably be Sound-type as their psychic powers are inside their ears and are portrayed as psychic sound waves. Though the power itself is not referred to as sound-based and the evolutions say the power is in the patterns beneath their ears, so…
    Theres others, but other commenters mentioned those already.

    Adding sound will bring the electric weakness back, keep the 4x grass weakness, and add a weakness to bug. I think it would be better as a split evolution or regional form.

    Personally I disagree... what made the fairy type so well made was that is was made almost exclusively to nerf the dragon typing which used to be the best type in the game by far. The sound type is trying to buff pre-existing typings that have already recieved buffs across generations, such as the bug type. Plus, we cannot easily anticipate what those changes would truly do to the metagame. Meanwhile, the fairy typing does not interact with a lot of types, being weak to only two (also buffing the barely used poison typing by the way) and being super-effective to 3 types, one of which used to only have 2 weaknesses. And sure the fairy type ended up among the best, but it certainly wasn't broken or unbalanced by any means.
    In short, the sound type is trying to do TOO much to balance the competitive metagame typing wise, which would actually serve to make the type rather unpredictable competitively. Also consider that taking into account type effectiveness is not the only factor in making a type balanced (ex: toxic, aurora veil, sandstorm, grassy terrain, etc.)

    • @mitchpitch
      @mitchpitch  2 роки тому +12

      Honestally you got me there. Those are good points and its not as simple adding sound type as it was adding fairy. It would be a lot more complicated and unpredictable in turms of how it would effect the meta. I guess the only real solution if they were to add it is to do it precisely well as to not screw up the meta and have a positive balancing effect

    • @AizakkuAdoman
      @AizakkuAdoman 2 роки тому +5

      In my opinion saying bug types have been buffed is like saying lapras is an ice type that’s useable in competitive play. Sure it’s not false by all means but it’s not nessicarily because of the ice type. It’s a bulky water type with a nifty gigantamax and various other moves. The same can be said with bug type. Most bug types in later gens are “buffed” thanks to their secondary type. I mean look at ribombee araquanid goliosopod vikavolt as well as good bug Pokémon from old gens like heracross armaldo scizor and scolipede most of these Pokémon are either carried by their secondary or by other gimmicks like their abilities or bst
      Also I would argue that fairy is pretty broken. Nothing like gen 5 dragon bug still it didn’t need to be bug resistant.
      Though I will agree that competitive play would probably make sound type unpredictable but that’s sorta the fun in Pokémon ain’t it? Being suprised at what your opponent can pull off?

    • @Oscar-ek2jx
      @Oscar-ek2jx 2 роки тому +4

      The fairy type is completely broken and they did a bad job with implementing it. Yeah sure it balanced dragon but it also buffed the steel type which it definitely didnt need, making it a mandatory type for most teams to have. Steel already resisted dragon anyway so its not like switch ins for dragon types didnt exist. Also fairy resists bug for some inexplicable reason
      I think they wanted to make sure fairy was going to be used in competitive so they just gave it an immunity to the best type in the game and didnt think much beyond that

The bug type is often viable because it's paired with certain other typing that synergize with it well... but that wouldn't make the bug type itself bad... scizor would be far worse off without it's bug typing, as it would no longer have only one weakness.
      Not that the bug type is good per say... just that making a whole new type to buff it seems like overkill.

I think the biggest thing holding it back in the community isn't necessarily that it's boring, but just that it sounds uncreative, similarly to "light", "nuclear", "wind", etc. But the way Uranium handled "nuclear" justified its inclusion, and the strengths/weaknesses of sound you described do the same.

      To be honest I think that pokémon types should be as natural and uncreative as possible. Most names are very basic, more in line with "light" (we have dark) and "wind" (we already have fire, water, and ground) rather than "nuclear" which is much more artificial so to speak. That's why fairy and dragon seem like oddballs to me, their names sound way too specific.

    Sound type is a bad idea from a balance perspective. The basis of what would be strong and weak to a sound type are incorrect from a material science point of view. sound type would be super affective against: rock type, fire type(maybe), Ice type, ground type (maybe), and psychic type. of these types none of them need nerfs as they are ether fairly well balanced as is or even a little under powered. Sound type would also be resisted by water type, resisted by or immune by bug type, resisted by or immune by grass type, and resisted by steel type. while bug and grass do need buffs this is not worth buffing steel (edit: also water does not need a buff ether) even more.
    I say these are the types that would be resistant/weak to sound because of the way sound actually interacts with materials. sound waves can actually do serious damage to objects in the real world which does make for a compelling type argument, however only objects with ridged and brittle structures are susceptible to sound ruptures meaning materials that are soft and flexible such as water and most metals would be resistant while ice and rock which are defensively fairly weak right now would only gain another weakness. If you are going to argue that Gamefreak could just pick and choose their interpretations of the interactions to force game balance then they already could with the types they have in the game right now, and it would be far easier to do than add a new type. as an example: fire needs heat to burn, ice is cold there for ice should resist fire and be super affective against it.
    sound would basically be a type to cover the overlap between normal and flying type, the later of which is can also be called bird type or air type. it is redundant and would poorly affect the balance of the game. if you are concerned with type balance their interactions can and have been changed before, and that is a better place to start.
    also there is a screen shot of a city square for gen 9 that has all they types in a circle. There are only 18 tiles in the circle so sound type is disconfirmed for gen 9 for now.

      Well, there is one new type possibility that gets overlooked way too much, and that is the Temporal/Time type.
      Just as sound is an integral part of our everyday being, so is time and it's properties. There are so many options for temporal type pokemon too, you could have seasonal guardians that share the Temporal type along with Ice, Fairy/Grass, Grass/Fire, & Ghost.
      It's a bit of a wacky type option, but I think it makes sense to add it either alongside sound or somewhere down the line after sound

    Really interesting argument, you've got me just about convinced. The only hangup is how receptive people would be to a new type right now...
    One thing with the pokemon that could be changed to sound type- did you consider the Oricorios? Obviously it'd be a hard workaround considering each one has a different typing to go with its style (Baile being fire and flying and Sensu being ghost and flying, etc.) but they are all based on different dance styles- I would like to hear your thoughts on this even if nothing else!

    I really like the idea of rebalancing the type matchups, and I like the thematic value of sound for some of the more boring normal pokemon (especially because normal is basically a non-type to me, which feels like a huge waste. I wish it resisted more things or something). That said, every current pokemon type is very easily arguable to be elemental. With the possible exception of fairy, ghost and psychic, but those are also very tangible states of being. Sound feels a little generic and unintuitive to me, and other people have already mentioned the issue with sound-based non-normal moves and stuff. It's hard, because there's an obvious emphasis on sound in the games that does feel underutilized, and a lot of those pokemon really need a buff, but it's a bit of a tough sell in terms of a whole new type

    • @mitchpitch
      @mitchpitch  2 роки тому

      Yeah that's a good point. I do still think despite it not being elemental or tangible really that its deserving of a type. But based on some comments there's no denying that people just from the name 'sound type' would think its lame or confusing.

    Great video! 100% agree on having a new type. maybe 2. I've always been pro Light type personally. I know we have fairy but with stuff like Dark and Ghost or Rock and Ground being so similar already. also some match up changes between existing types. personally I would change the ghost type the most. while it has 2 immunities it's too similar to dark imo. make Ghost neutral against itself, super effective on Fairies and Electric as well as resist them, and make it weak to dragons. feel like Dragon, Fairy, and Ghost would be a cool type triangle for future starters I think.

    Also, I really liked what you did with toxtricity. One of the reasons I didn't see sound type possible was because there was a lot of pokemon that have types that fit them a lot and are sound based, toxtricity being a perfect example for that. But you managed to fix it by making one toxtricity sound-electric and the other sound-poison, making it still electric-poison and also adding in the sound type. Very clever.

    thing is if they add a sound type
    all sound based moves become sound type
    and normal types will only have tri attack
    and all the mechanics that sound moves have:
    -being blocked by sound proof and throat chop
    -ignoring substitutes
    -activating throat spray
    -having signature abilities like punk rock
    -sound moves already having different typed moves (snarl, strange spell, metal sound)
    will all just count for a singular type ._.
    I dunno about this
    but, i have an idea for a normal special move that is not sound based:
    force wave
    90 bp
    the user sends out a (generic) power wave, this move has a 20% chance to flinch
    also:
    if psychic is getting another weakness without new resistances then goodbye psychic types, cya in PU

    Personally, I think an artificial/human/mythic type would make more sense. There are tons of Pokémon that are monotype which could receive it (or whose typing is not that fitting, or isn't anymore) like Abra, Porygon, Klink, Smeargle, regular Farfetch'd, Magikarp (and Gyarados potentially), Feebas and Lilipup for example, plus it's not something already defined in the game unlike sounds which has multiple abilities that interact with it due to being a movement property. This also has the possibility to bring back the theming steel lost in gen 6 of robotics and bring it back for those Pokémon while giving an excuse to rework hugely ice as well as to shake the type chart a bit.
    All that said, with the announcement of the new games, I think a new type is highly unlikely, I was already a detractor of the idea for a new type from the start, heck, I even had my doubts of a new type during the annoucement of gen 6 when we got a new type. Mainly because I don't think Pokémon needs a new type. Sound is an interesting type to make for a type-based game, though, so I would definetly fine interesting to see it in a diferent franchise/game.

      All that said, we do have a bug type, a dragon type and a ghost type which are all fairly body-based on principle. Bug particularly.
