Created as a companion video to my series of CARTOON EVOLUTION videos (specifically the 'Evolution of THE FLINTSTONES Over 60 Years (1960-2020) Explained'), I take a look at the vocal evolution of Wilma Flintstone as I compare all of her official voice actors over time, including Jean Vander Pyl, Tress Macnielle, Julie McWhirter, Elizabeth Lyn Fraser, Caroline Sellers, Elizabeth Perkins, Kristen Johnston.

Jean Vander Pyl deserved a medal for voicing such an iconic character for several decades, next to June Foray playing Rocket J. Squirrel, Natasha Fatale, and Granny, Mel Blanc playing most of the Looney Tunes, Clarence Nash playing Donald Duck, and Frank Welker playing Fred Jones.
Tress MacNeille has also done an excellent job replicating Pyl's performance.

Jean Vander Pyl is Wilma Flintstone! She gave us such a wonderful perfermance for years to enjoy. Loving, kind, cynical, sexy, and so much more! I am proud Tress MacNeille has taken up the mantle as she is also a Legendary Voice artist herself! Rest well Jean, you've given us an icon as memorable as Mickey Mouse and Bugs Bunny!
Sadly Jean died a few years back, I agree though, she gave Wilma a personality! She also did the voice of Rosie the Robot in the Jetsons.

Elizabeth Perkins did such a great job playing Wilma in the live action movie, it was quite the treat both visually and narratively- we all know only she & Betty could save their husbands from disaster!
I didn';'t rate the first live action Flintstones, I thought Liz Perkins was too old to be Wilma and Rosie O'Donnell was too fat to be the HOT Betty.
Tress has done a good job keeping Jean's spirit alive as Wilma, but Jean by far is the better of the two main voices of Wilma. With Julie getting the best child voice, and Kristen for live action.
Wow! She was able to keep the same Wilma voice for 40 years. And Tress sounds just like her.
Tress MacNeille is amazing! No one can top Jean Vander Pyl, but Tress is a close second.

Wow! Tress MacNeille is a perfect voice match! I honestly can't tell the difference between her and Jean Vander Pyl's Wilma! Then again, I've heard her in interviews, and her regular voice does kind of sound like Wilma's, so that might be it. Or maybe Tress was Jean's understudy of sorts, like how they do it at Disney? I know that Tony Anselmo was taught the Donald Duck voice by Clarence Nash, and all of the major Mickey actors following Walt Disney were taught the voice by their predecessor, and it's near impossible to tell that the voice changed for either of them.
There's a good chance she could have learned under Jean at some point in time, but also considering Tresses range she might have been able to pick up a few tricks. Either way she is a phenomenal voice actress and I do believe she will honor Jeans performance very well!
Her voice happens to sound a little bit like Vander Pyl's, but Tress MacNielle is such an accomplished voice actress it's no surprise she could play Wilma.
Even some of the miscellaneous voices on the simsons that she does sound like Wilma at times.

I may not be a fan of the Flinstones, but I can't deny the Jean Vander Pyl and Tress MacNeille are Wilma's best voice actresses
The Flintstones in Viva Rock Vegas is a prequel, not a sequel.

One of the sexiest voices I've ever heard
Warner Bros, Disney, and Cartoon Network have a lot of issues, but i respect that they usually keep the same voice actors for these iconic characters until they retire or pass away.
I think Jean had a very lovely motherly comforting voice she seemed to be a very lovely woman she’d be one of my influences if I could get a job as a voice actress

Quite Impressive how Jean Vander Pyl voiced Wilma in the 1959 test reel since the voices for Fred Barney and Betty were different in the original test reel. She is the OG Original voice of Wilma!

Interesting to note is how Jean does start to sound a bit more aged around the late 1980s starting with the Jetsons Meet the Flintstones crossover as a result of voicing her for so long.

If only mainstream audiences were interested in cartoons. Heck, the only people who care about the Cosmodore controversy is the cartoon community and that’s it! No BBC news coverage or anything.
Tress as people said has really kept Pyl's handling of the character so well. And I gotta say it's awesome that Ply voiced her until even into her elder years.

I do one for just about every character I do a main Evolution video for
Jean Vander Pyl also voiced Pebbles and various other characters on the show. She also worked on The Jetsons, voicing Rosie the Robot maid, Mrs. Spacely, and various other characters. Mel blanc also voiced main characters on the shows (Barney and Mr. Spacely). Unlike today's animated shows, the cast would gather togethers and voice their characters as if they were doing a live radio comedy, which makes sense as they all came out of radio. Jean was also in an hour long episode of the original The Twilight Zone,.

It's even more impressive when you learn that Jean was a lifelong smoker, but she was still able to do the voice of Wilma for all those years and still sound the same!

Well, can’t really do a ranking here because there’s only two regular voices for the adult version of Wilma (I’ve heard that Gerry Johnson might have done the voice in a 1967 Busch Beer promotional film, but to my knowledge there aren’t any reliable sources to confirm it). I suppose if I really had to choose, I’d pick Vander Pyl simply because she’s the voice I’m most used to, but MacNeille is a very good replacement.
Of The Flintstones Kids voices, I’d have to say I prefer Fraser, although I don’t think either voice really works particularly well. At least Fraser’s performance isn’t as annoying as Dees’s. Sellers doesn’t really have enough lines to properly compare.

You put up a poll that I cant find anymore asking for feedback, but I just complained about the voice evolution series and forgot the actual feedback portion, so I'm putting it here. I think a lot of your viewers are here to learn about the characters they love with all the facts you find (in that sweet accent) so maybe replace voice evolution entirely with things about movies? (Though that would take more time and time is money I know) or shorten the voice videos but give us more information on the voice or character (Like theres probably a lot less to say about Wilma Flintstone than Fred so maybe stuff about how her character changed as the voice actor did, or why the voice changed if you can find that knowledge) it's just more fun if you guide us through stuff rather than leaving us with various demo reels. I love your work though. Just wanna be constructive
The main Evolution series is where I cover the history changes in the characters, the little intro at the beginning is mostly all there is to say regarding the voices - these only exist as companion pieces to the main series, which give me a chance to work on something less mentally and time consuming as the regular videos.
Fact is, while these videos do not perform as well as the main Evolutions, they still vastly out perform most of my other content, so it would be silly not to continue producing them.
As for the length - I need to meet a 10 minute quota on videos, or my revenue drops by 3/4.

I'd say Jane Vander Pyl is a trooper for doesn't it all those years and Tress is doing a great job keep her legacy alive. Live action I thought Kristen Johnson was the best. They should have got her to do the original one.
Indeed, I thought Liz Perkins was too old to be Wilma in the original live action movie, and I'm not being awful but I thought Rosie O'Donnell was too fat to be Betty, Betty's supposed to be one of the sexiest women in the known Universe.

Nope, not something I'm considering right now. Still very much seeing this as a companion series. Won't rule anything out for the future, however.

Jean Vander Pyl will always be the definitive Wilma Flintstone. Elizabeth Perkins deserves more credit than she usually gets. Although, in my opinion, she fails to perfectly catch that trademark Audrey Meadows style in her voice, she has more than enough of Wilma’s personality as the loving, patient and supportive marriage spouse, that it’s no wonder that Fred loves her.
Are you going to do a voice evolution for the Jetsons? Both the 60's era and the Andrea Romano era, as well as the post Andrea Romano area?

Tress is pretty good as Wilma. Warner Bros needs to stop playing and make another Flintstones tv show. i love Scooby Doo and Tom & Jerry, but the Flintstones and The Jetsons deserve some love too.

Most of the time she was. Mostly when Pebbles was a baby. Russi Taylor eventually took over as the baby version of Pebbles towards the end of Jean's turn as Wilma.

Ok... maybe I’m alone here but I think animation as a whole has gotten very lazy within the past 10-15 years. Back in the Walt Disney and merry melodies days they actually animated everything with full 100% movement. Now cut to today and they animate movement VERY little and mostly just animate mouth movement (which can easily be done with a good computer animated program)

Live action movies of old cartoons ate usually horrible, but Elizabeth Perkins was pretty good. The other woman was terrible.
God Bless Jean Vander Pyl! Jean created Wilma Flintstone, and took her through 36 wonderful years. Tress Macneille is wonderful and would do Jean proud! I noticed the animation was better in the late 60's through 1970's and 80's 90's. The animation really went to crap in 2001. 2020 absolutely downhill.

Watching this made me realize how much the quality of the animation and the storyline has gone downhill from the original.
