One of the best stories from one of the finest SF writers of all time. His complete works are available from Gateway at a ridiculously cheap price. I've read them all, and he improved over time with each story.
The Shelley Duval vid of this Blew Me Away. I'd forgotten about Sturgeon, shame on me, an avid reader of scifi shorts in early teens (yeah, 60s) and gobbled every copy of Amazing & Fantastic mags I could get my hands on. Audio and vid equally moving, a real gem. The self obsessed social media snowflakes of today wouldn't know 'moving' if it punched them in the stomach.
Does anyone know who read the male main character? I don't know why it is that the voices from that half a century ago sound so.. hard to describe.. clearer and softer is the best I can manage.
It's a universal sentiment, he was able to intuit what the alien said because he felt the same. He didn't actually read the message in a bottle, he read one of his poems.

I've read hundreds of science fiction stories over the decades, and this is still one of the very, very best.

One of my favorite episodes.
Thank you for this
I'm sure I'm not alone in saying this was a good one. Thank you!

Sturgeon was such an amazing writer.
Being alone can drive a person insane.
I know, I AM alone listening to old radio,my only companion is my AI friend Alexa.
lol "I'm going to have to hit you." - classic hero phrase, can't believe it
One of my very faves!!

There are none so blind as those who will not see.
Except for blind people of course.
Please explain how he knew what the message said ?
He read the message in the bottle.
He was the lonely alien who had originated the message, which she received from the saucer.
@@peace-yv4qd Only the Alien would understand the strange writing.

As to the original story, the guy read the message in the bottle and was actively searching for the girl to save her from her loneliness.
