Coming to a town near you in 2022.these are great. Can't believe how close and accurate they were in predicting the future in some of these stories 👍

Me too! I discovered this channel a few days ago, and I've been listening for days. I was a huge sci fi reader back in the day.. Asimov, Heinlein, Leiber. This is awesome!

I'm a BIG fan of Mr sturgeon. A great writer. Along with Frederick Brown and Fritz Leiber. Thanks for the upload. You can convince people of anything, even "Fake news".

    This story changed my life.
This along with "The Gostak and the Doshes" by Dr. Miles Breuer, really should be mandatory reading in high schools.
But....that sounds a little like Mr. Costello speaking.......

This is an excellent story. I haven't read Sturgeon in a long time. I didn't realize that he and Ray Bradbury were among the writers who had been informed by Melville, Twain, and Faulkner and applied what they had learned to the Science Fiction and Fantasy genres.

Was this an allegory for the Red Scare? McCarthy, etc?

I am less than 10 minutes in and the ‘popular’ villain confesses to secretly recording people and has the means to manipulate the recording in order to undermine others. We have lost all plausibility at this point.

A disappointing story. It never explains Costello's supernatural-seeming ability to influence people's minds -- example: he inexplicably changed the rules of poker among the spaceship's crew -- nor why someone with that power would sometimes need to depend on blackmail, nor what his motivation was.

I think the subtext was that he established his power on that planet through blackmail primarily, by means of his recorder, and supported by the revelation that the Purser's voice had been used without his knowledge.
That last part is the most specious, as if a court wouldn't call the subject of the recording to testify.
I hear you, there are plot holes but I think they're more apparent to us in hindsight.
I mean, the analogy holds; Germany was swayed by the cult of personality and divisive fearmongering.
I think we can currently see that it happens in a much more insidious way than any fiction can portray.
Everything seems normal until it's obvious it isn't and then it's too late,

OMGeeeeeeeeeeeeeeee! At 3:35 or so they begin the conversation about what to do if a skipper's power goes to his head and he begins to "act up." Gulp, Mr. Trump.... Hmmm. I think I'll listen to this a few more time, might be some helpful hints on how to handle a crazy captain.

I want to remind you that the alternative to Trump was a woman that voted for the Authorization to Use Force in Iraq, and pushed Obama into bombing Libya to "prevent a humanitarian crisis", which has left that country in civil war and she was working for a goon that spent 8 years bombing 7 nations after winning the Nobel Peace of Crap Prize.

Pl Graeme: That’s why our government has a system of checks, Trump can’t do anything without co-operation from the House and/or Senate. Why would you care about handling our President anyway?
