Theodore Sturgeon IS probably my personal Favourite Fiction writer of them all. Science, Fantastic, Horror, Incl. His short stories I love the best. He was barely 19 when he starting publishing some great works. Stories like "The Other Man" "The Other Celia" "It" and "Killdozer" are among the more memorable stories. I believe it was he, who came up with the concept of "Pon Farr", the Vulcan reproductive urge, on the Star Trek Saga. Saucer Of Loneliness, is one of the better Episodes on X Minus One.
To the Loneliest One- "There is in certain living souls A quality of loneliness unspeakable So great it must be shared As company is shared by lesser beings. Such a loneliness is mine; so know by this That in immensity There is one lonelier than you." [Theodore Sturgeon- 1918-1985]
Archive.org's posting of the GALAXY magazine issue featuring "A Saucer of Loneliness" (editor H.L. Gold loved to do editorial fiddles such as dropping the "A" out of the title), February 1953: archive.org/details/galaxymagazine-1953-02 The Damon Knight cover story is pretty brilliant...but it was a pretty brilliant magazine in 1953, and usually worth reading no matter what issue one has (some of the last few were notably minor).
"...she said nothing. And then it was though a light came from her and her arms turned into tentacles and her smile turned into sharp rows of teeth as she ate my face off. But I felt loved as a double cheeseburger would be to a fat chick. The End

I agree, Shore Leave was one of the best 1960's Star Trek episodes ever. Sturgeon was a master craftsman with an extraordinary imagination.
Loneliness would be unbearable if not for the companionship of hope
THE quote always squeezes' my heart :'(
Ted wrote the greatest thing I ever saw on Star Trek, the episode "Shore Leave" in '66. What a wonderful concept.
Sweet story worth a listening.
sad, but moving.
later it was made into an episode of the new twilight zone circa mid-1980s.
