PCA Spotlight: 2018 Porsche 911 GT2 RS technical analysis

- The Porsche 911 GT2 RS is a fascinating car, one that’s clearly related to lesser 911s yet costs three times as much as a base Carrera and set a Nürburgring production car lap record. Porsche is no stranger to ultra-high-performance track machines, but as you’ll see in this video, TPC Racing Owner Mike Levitas shows us how the GT2 RS is special.
This video was shot a few weeks ago, so with the introduction of the GT2 RS Clubsport last week at the Los Angeles Auto Show now behind us, some of the special motorsport parts used in the road car make more sense - especially if it was envisioned as a homologation special of sorts.
Watch the video above for a brief technical analysis of the GT2 RS.
This video is great. Uncanny, even.
One of the best vids I've ever seen - very intelligent and articulate commentary, well done.
Great video. Shows the reasoning for the price differential (although not cheap), compared to the "street" cars. This is a totally different car underneath, and the stellar engineering and it's purpose reflects that.
I know that Mike is busy and all, but he is such a wealth of information that there should be a whole series just on him. I can easily see a 12 part series with him in it! Well done and thanks for the video.
another superb vid like the GT4 one and another one that nobody can find anywhere else. many thanks to both of you
I can't think of any other car club going in such detail about the powertrain and the chassis, for a supercar.
This is why I love Porsche, it's a pure track car!
There isn’t a car out today that can be raced , daily driven, run low tens at 139-140, look so bad ass and handle and brake like a dream while being reliable a
With a top notch interior all in one package with a warranty. This is the best over all car out right now.
Absolutely fascinating - thank you much!
This was awesome, man I am jealous.
AWESOME dude !! eating this stuff UP !! SO glad u did this Video very much appreciated !!! LOVING IT !!
Guys, that sticker “Made in China” sounds bad, doesn’t it? But the gt2rs have had problem with production of certain parts to mass produce. As an example this bit of carbon maybe was a part they couldn’t produce in Europe. Then they had to make it China to deliver the cars in time. That doesn’t say anything of the quality, it surely is as good as a carbon bit made in Europe. I think Porsche have very high standards especially if they have to make a part in China.
I came across this accidentally and really enjoyed the content!
what a nightmare to work on.
by making even base models overcomplex they provide long term income for their dealerships. it's similar to what we germans call "schedulded wear" for example expensive clothing brands put cheap ink on their t-shirts to force you to buy a new shirt every couple of years while a 1,50$ shirt full of writing and ink I bought in asia is still in good shape after 10 years. even though the tech on this car is faszinating I couldn't care less because the mid engined corvette is probably going to be faster at 1/3 of the price and with 1/4 of the tech.
zachary paris seriously even to change a damn oil filter effn crazy
At this price point, I hardly think the owners could care any less but hey have you seen the plumber's mess in a 996. Ironically still like 'em. 😪
Yup, still fastest car in nurburgring XD
@@herberthans7015 you mean dye when you say ink?
How Porsche package this whole technology in their cars is absolutely insane!!!
If you don't track the car how often should you change the oil?
I don’t think I saw a single rubber bushing under there. Race tech for the street. On another note, I would love to hear his thoughts on the GT350 mustang in the background
Brilliant! Porsche's engineering zenith. 6:40.33. Wow!
Amazing car and great video - thank you!
Thanks for posting this. This is Porsche enthausist heaven!
The NACA ducts to keep the inner CV joints cool is just tip-top.
What an amazing machine
You've come a LONG way. Wow.
The best detailed video
Excellent video and beautiful car!
Wow Mike really knows his shit, what a car.
Awesome! I had no idea you had to take the bumper off to change the oil - I hope the 992 GT3 is not the same way! Speaking of the 992 GT3, when are you tearing one apart for a video!
Awesome review!
Looks like the turbo's are mirror image? Do you know if they are counter rotating?
Great video. Very instructive.
Are the components Motorsport derived? I didn't quite catch that.
Thumbs up for Ring Police! 😅 Was a tough year in ADAC GT Masters...
Why are the function of those two little fans at the back??
Great video, more like this please👍
The wizards at Wiessach turn out the greatest mechanical / performance art on the planet.
I wouldnt throw ‘race car’ around so much as a compliment to durability. Light and fast are race parts, make it more durable than the length of a race and you wasted performance.
Great vid. I can't believe they tucked the oil filter away in a location that requires 4hrs of labor to get to though. Maybe that purposely done to prevent diy maintenance on the car?
What an awesome car!
Dude needs a UA-cam channel!
..man...ain't THAT the Truth !!
Incredible
Look at the white tag on the bottom towards the right. “Uncanny, properly race built German race car.”
Would you buy a GT2 RS or GT3 RS?
Sorry for the dumb and non-car related question, but where can I get a T-shirt like the one Mike is wearing?
Very cool, thanks
At 8:05, is that a “made in China” sticker I see?
Hope it's just the sticker itself is made in China
yeah because it's made by robots and it's much cheaper
No, you didn't see that, lemme just move the camera.
@@kayoedowner6711 It has nothing to do with race and everything to do with worse QC and lower standards.
Not a dry sump how is that motorsport?
it is dry sump, every porsche new sports car are dry sump, even the most basic 718.
Axels were beefy too 😮
Thanks for watching. Be sure to subscribe.
8:05 who noticed the "Made in China" label?
4hrs is dealer talk... I’ve seen guys at the track knock that out in 30mins.... I asked why? So that they can send their used oil to be annualized for any problems from driving the car hard on the track.
This is ridiculous! Removing the bumper just to service the car 🙄. I have a 930. Thank God!
The GT3RS is on the same level
8:05 "Made in China"
Who knew they had a spring dyno
Nice audio
Looks like a real beast underneath, thanks for showing that ! It was pretty funny to see the "Made in China" tag at 8:04 though - :-)
WANT!!!!!!
10mm fastener well then
Just have two mikes next time......
Made in China bracket for intercooler, interesting
"...bracket for intercooler, interesting"... Really...??? Is that really interesting for you... lol! Yeah, of course, because it's the "most important part" in this 911 GT2 RS... hmmmm??!
@@user-jf8gd3lv7q LOL, troll, did made in china hurt your pride?
So 4 Corvette z06 owners dont like this !!!
A classic example of an powertrain that should have been retired a couple of decades ago. With an enormous amount of engineering effort and an amazing attention to detail, Porsche have made this design work very well. Imagine what they could have done with a more conventional powertrain layout and the corresponding reduction in manufacturing costs. Their cars would be considerably more affordable and easier to maintain. Sometimes logic is not part of the equation.
you have to recognize that what you call a flaw makes them "special" though. and todays markets are all about "special" people and "special" products.
No MOTORSPORT wonder MOTORSPORT people MOTORSPORT hate MOTORSPORT Porsche MOTORSPORT owners MOTORSPORT. Did MOTORSPORT I MOTORSPORT mention MOTORSPORT motorsport? MOTORSPORT.......... MOTORSPORT
To all the automotive experts commenting on this video: good job spotting the "Made in China" sticker on that bracket, Porsche is so busted now lol. You seriously think all those engineers in Germany are fool?
You guys know nothing about how cars are made and what makes them successful on the track and on the streets.
Talking about carbon fiber parts: China and Taiwan are the absolute leaders in composite manufacturing, like it or not, ant they make most of the bits for all the cars you admire. Prestigious manufacturers like Porsche have on site quality control on the production, or even they have their own plant in China.
silly people kicking up dust over a component being made in china... see what happens when your msrp goes up when all manufacturing is taken to your country of choice, AND failure rate goes up because your quality incidentally suffers because the chinese are more experienced at making those parts
21:26 Team RING POLICE drivers.
Made in China..... seriously Porsche. At least keep the jobs in Europe. I’ve heard England makes some pretty good carbon bits..... can’t tell me with all those F1 teams they couldn’t find a short run supplier 🙄
I saw that too, around 8:10, smh
التصميم والفنون اضافات وتزويد محركات الأقلاع بورش
13:33 that hose is destroyed by that extended metal...bad design...
What a terrible design for maintenance......although if you can afford one you can afford a mechanic to spend days changing the oil.....it even has Chinese parts!!! Come on Porsche you can do better than this for the money you charge for one of these....
Yeah it's almost a joke. Basically have to take the car apart to change the oil.
its a friggin race car, not some trophy to parade around at car shows. you guys need to buy a clue.
Seems to be so complex. Wondering how much simpler it would be if it is an EV.
What a joke!
